    I discovered this prestigious wine when I visited the vineyards of the Rhône Valley. The syrah offers in this case a perfect equilibrium between fruit and tannins and it offers a strong wine with a beautiful aromatic intensity !

    A cuvée 100% syrah produced by 20 to 50 years-old vineyards. The syrah is the most common red grape variety in the Crozes-Hermitage region. A surprising fact: some winemakers sometimes blend the syrah with a maximum of 15% of white grape varieties such as Marsanne or Roussanne!

     Nose

    a tempty nose of pure syrah with a nice intensity, pleasant and lightly woody. Also the nose is dominated by flavours of wild flowers and red fruits such as the blackcurrant, together with notes of minerals such the shale.

    Franck Faugiers runs the winery, a family business since three generations. Passionate of rugby, Franck loves his work. He practices the environmental friendly viticulture with a real respect of fuits and vines and each year he participates to the hand-harvest with his team.

    The Hauts Chassis winery is located in the south of the area of the designation Crozes-Hermitage, in the village La Roche sur Glun. Crozes Hermitage is the most prestigious appellation of the northside of the Rhone Valley. The winery stretches for 32 acres where 29 are dedicated to the production of red wines. The soil is rich in glacial-fluvial sediments such as clay, sand and pebbles that have been transported by the glaciers and then transported by the rivers.

    As I was walking through the hills of Crozes-Hermitage, I discovered a place called « Les Hauts Châssis» where Franck Faugier’s wine estate is located. This talented winemaker is a true syrah lover who elaborates several batches of remarkably refined Crozes-Hermitage. The melted tannins of this slightly spicy wine will perfectly enhance a roasted partridge.

    There is a debate among experts about the origin of the only black variety in the Northern Rhône Valley. Some people believe that it was brought back in 1224 from the city of Shiraz in Iran by a knight returning from crusades. Others say that it arrived from Italy when Emperor Probus allowed the culture of grape in Gaul. But nowadays, scientists tend to think that it’s a crossing between two ancient French grapes that no longer exist.

    Domaine des Haut-Chassis has been a family vineyard for three generations. The arrival of Franck Faugier at the head of the estate in 1998 really changed everything. This passionate man implements the best practices in his vines. The team prunes manually, they go through green harvesting… no effort is spared in order to get the healthiest and most concentrated grapes !

     Behind such a nice wine, there is no coincidence. It’s first of all the result of beautiful grapes grown on vines more than 50 years old on average. But the relief also plays a predominant role. The vines grow on sloppy hills with a southern exposure which exposes the grapes to a lot of sun, which is good for ripeness, and to the wind, which is good to keep the grapes 100% healthy until the day of the harvest.

    It is with pleasure that I present this month a wine produced in my region: Burgundy. To be more specific, this fantastic wine is from Mercurey, the largest appellation of the Côte Chalonnaise. Les Crêts 2012 is awell balanced and fruity wine with notes of blackcurrant and gooseberry. To me, it is a perfect example of the refinement of Pinot Noir.

    If you need to know one thing about wines from Burgundy, it is that when they are allowed to have a specific appellation, it means that they are made from a single variety of grape: Chardonnay for white wines and Pinot noir for red wines. Pinot Noir is a delicate grape, sensitive to soil and climate.It is much less robust than Cabernet Sauvignon for example. However, it can, if the best conditions are gathered, give the best wines in the world. Generally pale in colour, this variety often has a good alcohol content and acidity, with fine and elegant tannins.

     L'anecdote à propos du récoltant

    Saviez-vous que le village de Mercurey porte le nom du messager des dieux de la mythologie romaine, Mercure. En effet, les Romains ont dédié un temple à cette divinité dans ce village. C’est aussi dans ce village que la famille de Suremain s’est installée en 1870, et c’est làbas qu’elle cultive la vigne depuis. Yves est d’ailleurs le président du syndicat des vignerons de Mercurey. Solidarité et esprit de famille, des valeurs que portent haut et fort les Suremain !

     Les Crêts sont nichés sur 1.3 hectares au sommet du coteau (la crête) et avec une exposition sud. Le sol est issu d’une marne très calcaire; en effet lorsqu’on laboure la terre en profondeur, on trouve de grosses plaques de craie ! Extrêmement poreuse, cette roche laisse l’eau filtrer en profondeur avant de la restituer à la vigne, donnant des vins fins exprimant les arômes propres au cépage. C’est un sol idéal pour laisser le pinot noir exprimer sa finesse.

    At the age of 20, Pierre Finon chose, for the sake of the vineyard, to transform his farm into a wine estate. Year after year, vine stock after vine stock, the estate grew to what it is today. Moreover Françoise and Pierre Finon back a development of the vine that preserves the environment. Thus, the domain is led in sustainable agriculture on the 20 hectares, to encourage the expression and the potential of its terroir./p>

     Located on the slopes of the right bank of the Rhone Valley, the vineyard of the Domaine Pierre Finon enjoys a granite soil covered with a layer of gneiss and shale.     Chinon, located in the hearth of the Val de Loire, is a small and prestigious vineyard. It extends over approximately 5700 acres, divided into nineteen villages. The vines are exposed to two main types of soil:

    1/ The gravel terraces, which give us light and flavourful wines called “Easter wine” or “Spring wine”.

    2/ The limestone and clayey-siliceous slopes give us wines that can be kept for years. This wine comes from this side of vineyard.

     The Tour Trencavel domain, located in the Minervois, is spread on clay-limestone soils. A soil like this one enables to produce wines that are round, without being too fat. It also brings delicacy to the mouth.

That is probably the first time you will taste a wine from this AOP. I really wanted to make you discover a wine produced by Laurent Bes, and that was not easy as Laurent only produces few bottles. But we finally got some bottles for our subscribers. »

    Once he got his diploma in the vine-growing industry, Laurent Bes decided to take the management of his parents’ domain. Thanks to his different experiences in South Africa, he succeeded in making the domain famous. His cuvees are very appreciated by all the people that tasted them, and we will probably hear more about this domain in the coming years.

     Vineyards that produce the Grignan les Adhémars AOP benefit from southern and northern influences of the Côtes du Rhone region. Vineyards are spread on the hills of Valaurie, an unusual soil made of flintstones. This kind of soil absorbs the heat of the sun during the day and distributes it during the night. Flintstones are important in the development of aromas.

    Lirac is the appellation located just in front of Chateauneuf Du-Pape! In the Lirac vineyard, we can also find the famous rounded pebbles, so characteristic of Châteauneuf: those little stones were made famous thanks to their ability ofstoring heat during the day to return it to the vines at night. This wine is sophisticated, and I truly enjoyed the silky tannins, the spicy notes and the good balance of alcohols. Powerful, it goes perfectly with strong dishes, such as meat in sauce.

    The domaine Coudoulis managed to maintain a good reputation since its takeover by Bernard Callet in 1996. This winemaker’s choices have a lot to play in this reputation: indeed, the yield is limited to 42 hectoliters per hectare, harvest is done manually and the grappes destalking is made very carefully so that the tanks contain the least possible impurities.

     The vines grow on a red calcareous-clay soil, full of pebbles accumulating heat during the day and returning it at night. The terraces above the village of Saint-Laurent-les-Arbres ensure a flow of rainwater, hence avoiding any stagnation that would damage the roots, while the Mistral wind regulates the humidity of the vineyard.

    I found this blend of gros manseng and sauvignon very well done. This is an interesting balance between the opulent texture of gros manseng and the freshness of sauvignon. This harmonious wine will be perfect for the warm afternoons of spring paired with barbecued sardines... Summer is just around the corner!

    This blend is typical of Gascogne and mixes on the one hand the creamy texture of gros manseng and on the other hand the fresh aromas of citrus fruits given by sauvignon, especially grapefruit and lime. The ugni blanc, provided by 50-year-old vines, complete this blend with refinement.

    The Fezas family has been in charge of the estate for more than 150 years. Six generations succeeded one to another sharing the same goal of enhancing the wines from this marvellous terroir of Gascogne. The name of the vineyard, Chiroulet, comes from “chiroula”, a specific wind that blows in the area almost all the time. This wind is a really good thing as it keeps the grapes fresh and healthy!

     The Domaine Chiroulet is located on the highest hills of Gascogne and therefore benefits from a southern exposure and strong winds that ensure grapes’ healthiness. The name “Les Terres Blanches” means “The White Soils” in French and refers to the limestone the vines are planted on.

    The Domaine de Panisse already existed in the 15th Century. At that time, it used to belong to Dominique de Panisse, Louis XII’s chamberlain. But through centuries, the domain has been abandoned, and remained uncultivated during the first half of the 20th Century. Fortunately, Jean-Marie, Christine and Fanny got it back and did a great job in resuscitating the estate.

    This wine is already ten years old and starts offering nice aromas of evolution. However, it still has a lot of freshness and ripe blackberries aromas, great Languedoc’s wines hallmark. At the nose step, you can already smell the nice evolved aromas of leather. At the mouth step, we feel a nice balance between ripe fruits and spices, typical flavours of syrah.

    Originally, syrah is Rhône Valley’s emblematic variety. But syrah is a strong variety that can thrive on a wide variety of terroirs on which it gives quite different wines. The result is spicy and smooth wines like this amazing Grès de Montpellier.

    The 57 hectares of Domaine de Silène used to belong to Jacques and Laurent Pourcel, two twin brothers, famous for their three stars restaurant “Le jardin des sens” in Montpellier. In 2000, the estate was bought by Robert Skalli, a major Languedoc wine producer famous for having built an empire thanks to his outstanding ability to detect the potential of wine estates. Domaine de Silène was one of his great successes: he turned a great estate into an amazing one./p>

     Domaine de Silène’s vines develop on a poor limestone soil in the warm and dry mountains around Montpellier. As a consequence, the vine stocks have to grow very deep roots in order to find what it needs to thrive.     This Brouilly impressed me with its refinement and power. The uncommon nose starts the party with nice aromas of fruits and peonies. On the palate, you will feel again this deep intensity along with minerality, this salty like impression that characterizes the best Brouilly, the most famous of the ten “Cru” of the Beaujolais region.

    1395 is the year everything changed for gamay. Indeed, it is the year Philipe Le Hardi, Duke of Burgundy, decided that only pinot noir could be cultivated in Burgundy, and that gamay had to be grown in Beaujolais, at the south border of his duchy. Nowadays, gamay is still the only black variety grown in Beaujolais, but it spread a little and you can also taste nice wines from gamay in the Loire Valley and in Switzerland.

    In the Beaujolais region, wine estates usually cover dozens of hectares. Julien Duport, Régis Luttenauer and Denis Vedrinne made a different choice and bought only 3 hectares. But not any hectares ! Indeed, their vines are located on the best terroir of Brouilly and have one particularity : they are more than 100 years old on average ! The three friends care a lot about their vines which repay them with amazing grapes allowing them to elaborate exclusive batches of great Brouilly./p>

     Domaine des Cadoles’ three hectares are planted on a granitic soil. The main characteristic of granitic soils is that it has strong filtering properties and therefore let the water gets deep taking on the way nutrients away from the roots. So it submits the vines to a high level of water stress. It’s a good thing for gamay as its lazy variety has to be challenged to reveal its full potential.

    With its amazing flavours of thyme and cardamom, this wine reminds me a nice walk in the garrigue facing the sunset, when the mistral gets fresher and seems to be saying “time to go back home and to uncork a bottle”. I found that the aromas of this wine were remarkably refined and its texture was really smooth but without being fat, which is pretty rare and of course, nice on the palate !

    Along the Rhône River, there are countless vines. But have you noticed that the black grapes could look very different from one vine to another ? You might have noticed that some of them are especially dark with dark blue reflections. These vines are grenache, the prominent grape variety in Southern Rhône Valley.     The Cellier Family has been cultivating their estate for eight generations. Its particularity ? Instead of producing a lot of Côtes du Rhône and a little Châteauneuf-du-Pape, they do the opposite with 13 hectares in Châteauneuf and only half an hectare in Côtes du Rhône. As you can guess, they take special care of this half hectares that they treat with as much as attention as their Chateauneuf ’s vines./p>

     In the southern Rhône Valley, the sun heats hard. However, wines elaborated there are full of refinement and freshness. Why is it so ? Thanks to soils rich in clay ! Indeed, clay has a strong ability to store water. Therefore, the ground remains relatively cold and wet, which cools the vines when the heat gets too high and rehydrates the grapes when needed.

    Brunely’s story started in Sarrians, one of the village part of the Vacqueyras appellation. The winery built it expertise on this appellation before expanding on almost all the appellations in Southern Rhone valley. The unicorn (Licorne in French) you’ll see on the label was a sculpture given by the pope Martin the 5th to Mr Pellegirin de Brunnelis who fought to defend the Pope’s land in Central Italy./p>

    This cuvee from Domaine de l’Ecette shows how much Rully is a terroir that gives refined and elegant wines. Pinot noir, known to be among the most elegant varieties is here at its best. It displays its intense fruity flavours (mainly cherry) with mushrooms and spicy aromas that bring complexity. The main aftertaste is remarkably long and enjoyable.

    Pinot Noir prefers to grow away from the sea as it does not like humidity. Indeed, it is very fragile and falls ill easily. A terroir of limestone, and very filtering stone, are a great addition to protect vine stocks from too much water. It is this magic combination that allowed Burgundy to become and by far the best place in the world to grow Pinot Noir.

    “Summer holidays are over… To keep in mind the summer exoticism, I suggest you this beautiful bottle of Gigognan that will be paired with a Creole menu concocted by Catherine Naud, a martiniquan chef. The nose of this wine is very expressive and reveals a complex aromatic bouquet with perfumes of fruits and flowers. The bitter aftertaste confers to the wine a nice fresh touch. I definitely don’t advise to aerate the bottle.”

The Mistral wind is crucial since it allows the vineyard to recovery.     Last march you have tasted the Carillon du Château Fombrauge de Bernard Magrez. This month I would like to suggest you another wine Médoc: this Grand Cru is made by the Château Tour Carnet, a winery that was previously owned by the French philosopher Michel de Montaigne. The particularity of its vineyards is to use suspended wine lees to increase the aromas of the wine.

    A wine blend typical for this region: merlot gives suppleness to wine whereas the cabernet sauvignon confers body, tannic structure and long keeping potential. The 18-years-old ageing in oak barrels allows the aromas to shine!

    Known for his special wines, Bernard Magrez is a self-made man who became the first owner of the prestigious classified wine (Grands Crus Classés) in Bordeaux.

    LThe winery is characterised by a soil composed of a calcareous clay basements covered with a thick layer of gravels called “gunziennes”. The same stones that you can find at the famous hill of La Tour Carnet. The gravels gunziennes were originally transported by glaciers and they are are poor in mineral and very draining. They oblige the roots of the vines to go deeply into the ground to find their nutriments.
