  1. Les Terrassettes 2011, Clos de l'Anhel, Corbières

Les Terrassettes 2011, Clos de l'Anhel, Corbières

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

“ Sophie Giraudin considers Les Terrassettes as “the cuvee for my friends”. It’s the most important and representative between all her wines. This tipple is light and complex at the same time, and this is what I love most. It’s rare to find a quality carignan, however, when they are well made, they are simply wonderful!”

    Feuille

    Grape variety

The varietal carignan perfectly complements the syrah and it finds its natural environment in the Corbières. Once, carignan had a bad reputation due to its large diffusion. Thanks to the progress in winemaking techniques, many winemakers produce great wines based on this grape variety.

     Anecdote

    Winemaker

Owner of this winery since 2000, Sophie Giraudin likes calling herself “zero-generation winemaker”. She only produces Bio-certified wines and she also respects some principles of biodynamic agriculture. This practice consists in intensifying the exchange between grapevines and their environment (soil and air). The goal is to reach a better expression of the terroir and producing beautiful wines.

     Terroir

    Terroir

Vineyards are situated in the heart of the Corbière denomination and they grow on clayey-limestone and silt-laden soil. Silts are granular material of a size somewhere between sand and clay and they occur as soil on a surface water body. Silts are very beneficial for soil’s fertility. Finally, the name of this wine comes from its terraced vineyards.

  2. Roc des Mates 2010, Château de Cazeneuve, Pic Saint-Loup

Roc des Mates 2010, Château de Cazeneuve, Pic Saint-Loup

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

“Roc des Mates is strong, tannic and velvety at the same time. The taste is pleasant and silky. It has a long keeping potential thanks to his 18 ageing in barrels. Here you have a fine wine, very representative of the Pic Saint-Loup denomination. This very tannic wine will seduce those who love masculine wines. Open two hours before serving to round tannins”.

     Anecdote

     Winemaker

André Leenhardt, Dedé for his friends, was mayor of his village and president of the syndicate of Pic Saint-Loup wines. He purchased this winery in 1988. Wines from south of France are known for their character and wild aspect; however Dedé has successfully given roundness, fineness and smoothness to this strong wine.

     Terroir

    Terroir

Clayey soil, vegetation and Mediterranean climate are the stronger assets of terroir Pic Saint-Loup. Vineyards of this cuvee are situated on a mountain chain at 150 metres above sea level. In particular vines grow on calcareous-clay slopes that are skeletal thin and pebbly soils. 25-years old vineyards give good quality grapes since the age is in inverse proportion to quantity. Indeed smaller quantity allows grapes to grow better.

Cuvée Gourmande 2012, Domaine de la Charmoise, Touraine

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

« This month I would like you to discover the Domaine de la Charmoise. Its wines are outstanding in terms of price quality ratio. The Ma- rionnets, the owners of this winery, are passionate about their work and this is shown in what they produce! This Cuvee Gourmande will probably enhance the St Pierre that the Chef Philippe Vétélé proposes this month. »

     Anecdote

    Winemaker

The Marionnet family arrived at Soings, in the east part of Touraine, 30 km to the south of Blois, during the 50s’. What’s the peculiarity of this winery? The Marionnets own the oldest grapevine of France, dated around 1850, before the phylloxéra crisis.

     Terroir

    Terroir

The sauvignon has a strong presence in the Vallée de la Loire, and is highly demanded for its structure, its freshness and its wide range of aromas. Very sensible to diseases (especially powdery mildew), it harmed its culture for a long time. However, the progress of vine-growing permitted to develop its plantation since the 60’s.

  5. Viognier, 2013, Domaine Pierre-Belle, Côteaux de Béziers

Viognier, 2013, Domaine Pierre-Belle, Côteaux de Béziers

    Sommelier

    Alain's opinion

This white wine has a good quality/price ratio. It is a soft wine with a light typical viognier nose, mingling notes of white flowers, pear and almonds with a very pleasant finish. I particularly appreciate theroundness of this wine, not so common for wines from this price range. I advise you to taste it with friends, paired with a light meal.

    Feuille

     Grape variety

Viognier is a vigorous grape variety that almost disappeared during the 20th century! Originally from northern Rhone, itsuffered a lot from both phylloxera and the First World War: in 1965,there were only 8 small hectares of viognier remaining...! Today, this variety spreads all over the world, especially in California where it is highly appreciated. What a beautiful come back!

The team currently managing the winery has opted for organic methods that result in a good soil conservation and a limited use of pesticides. Only 4 to 6 treatments of the vines per year are necessary, while the average in the French vineyards is 16 per year !

     Terroir

    Terroir

Located in the north of Béziers, the vineyard of 60 hectares of Pierre-Belle grows on clay-limestone slopes exposed to the Mediterranean sun. This is an ideal location for the viognier, that requires regular sunshine exposureto express all its aromas, along with a poor limestone ground for its roots development.

  6. Château Grand Lartigue 2009, Grand Cru, Saint Emilion

Château Grand Lartigue 2009, Grand Cru, Saint Emilion

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

2009 is one of the best vintages Saint-Emilion ever produced. One could even compare it to the legendary 2005 vintage, known to have been the best vintage in Bordeaux for decades. Thus, it was important to me to select a wine that could introduce you to great Bordeaux vintages. And of all the wines I tasted, Château Grand Lartigue was the one showing best this wonderful combination of strength, fruit and tannins that 2009 gave us. This wine is to be paired with you best meals!

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Cabernet franc is widespread in the right bank of Bordeaux, but also in the Loire Valley ! The terroir allows it to reach maturity one week before the cabernet sauvignon does, which allows the winemakers to take more time to protect the grapes during the harvest. It is widely grown in Saint- Emilion, and is even the main variety used for one of the most famous wine in the world: Château Cheval Blanc (60%). It is less tannic than cabernet sauvignon, so it ages faster and can be drunk earlier.

     Anecdote

Pierre Chollet is the director of Château Grand Lartigue, a property which covers 5 hectares in Saint-Emilion. His company Vitis Vintage resurrected this forgotten estate in 2001. They built a new winery and completely changed the agricultural process. For example, Chollet decided to stop using chemical fertilizer.

     Terroir

    Terroir

The terroir of Saint-Emilion is one of the most famous in the world, and there is reason for that: it is also one of the best ! The ground is a mix of very old sand and wet clay. Moreover, the rules of the appellation are very strict: winemakers cannot make more than 40 hl of wine per hectare, and the wine has to age at least 12 months in oak barrels.

  7. Robert Pagès, Banyuls, Domaine Madeloc

    Robert Pagès, Banyuls, Domaine Madeloc

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

The cold winter made me feel like choosing a very warm wine. It is actually hard to find warmer wines than fortified wines from the Roussillon region in the Deep South of France. What is a fortified wine? It is a wine in which the winemakers add some distilled spirit. What for? The goal is to kill the yeasts that would otherwise turn the sugar into alcohol. This action has two consequences: the spirit increases the alcohol percentage per volume and there is a lot more sugar remaining in the wine.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Grenache is the most planted grape variety in the world. It is planted on more than 200.000 hectares all over the world. Grenache noir brings to the wine alcohol and a strong aromatic intensity with candied fruits aromas. Grenache gris brings mineral flavours that balance the wine.

Pierre Gaillard started ploughing the vineyards with a horse when he was 13 years old. He then founded the Madeloc estate and now manages several wine estates. Le bonheur est dans la vigne 2011, Domaine La Destinée, Côtes-du-Rhône

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

In French, “bonheur” means happiness, and this wine will make you feel particularly happy. Indeed, it displays an amazing balance between acidity and sweetness. The nose is deep and enchanting, and on the palate, I felt really nice aromas of cherry and cinnamon. It will pair really well with a nice brioche sausage roll.

    Terroir

The vines of the Domaine de La Destinée benefit from a great perk: they are planted on a mix of clay and limestone. What does it mean? Bellegrave du Poujeau, Haut-Médoc 2011

    The opinion of the sommelier

This little vineyard in Médoc is a nice discovery. The attack is very pleasant and the aromatic profile of this wine is complex, mainly based on strawberry and blackcurrant aromas perfectly enhanced by a marked acidity. This wine is at the beginning of its peak, but if you enjoy tertiary aromas, it will easily wait for you a few years in your cellar.

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

Château Bellegrave du Poujeau is a typical example of what is called a gardener’s wine. With only 4 hectares, Jean-Pierre Cantelaube can give a lot of attention to each of his vine stocks. For example, they are all pruned individually which allow to reach the highest level of ripeness possible each time, so there are no more bad vintages!

     Terroir

    Terroir

The vines are planted on a particularly thick ground of Graves. These big and hard round pebbles do not retain water and nutrients on the contrary to the layer of clay these lie on. Therefore, vines’ roots have to struggle through the pebbles to get their water and nutrients in the clay. It is a good thing as it forces the vine to be stronger so as to reveal the whole potential of the grapes!

La relève 2015, Jeanne Gaillard, Saint Joseph

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

Pierre Gaillard is one on the few Rhône Valley’s star winemakers. As Pierre ages, he is slowly putting his daughter Jeanne in charge of his best plots of vines. This is the meaning of this cuvee "La relève" (succession in French) which was designed and vinified by herself. This wine shows that Jeanne is more than a good choice to take over : this is the perfect mix between Gaillard’s amazing skills and a great vintage.

These are swept by the winds that blow almost permanently in this rocky corridor : it is this characteristic that allows the Syrah, the black grape variety in the area, to express this remarkable freshness.

  12. Les Rocailles 2015, Domaine Pierre Finon, Saint-Joseph

Les Rocailles 2015, Domaine Pierre Finon, Saint-Joseph

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

Les Rocailles, by the very talented winemaker Pierre Finon, does honour the great appellation of Saint-Joseph. A powerful wine that expresses delicious aromas of blueberry and black pepper, and refreshed by notes of violet specific to syrah. On the palate, a beautiful finish with tannins that shows us a strong wine with a great ageing potential.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Syrah is the emblematic black grape of the northern part of the Rhone Valley and the only black grape of the Saint-Joseph appellation. It has a spicy character and delicious aromas of violet that it expresses in the wines it gives, as fine as complex. A balance bet-ween power and finesse specific to the Northern Rhone Valley.

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

At the age of 20, Pierre Finon chose, for the sake of the vineyard, to transform his farm into a wine estate. Year after year, vine stock after vine stock, the estate grew to what it is today. Moreover Françoise and Pierre Finon back a development of the vine that preserves the environment. Thus, the domain is led in sustainable agriculture on the 20 hectares, to encourage the expression and the potential of its terroir./p>

  13. Le Clos des Vieux Marronniers 2016, Maison Jean Loron, Beaujolais

Le Clos des Vieux Marronniers 2016, Maison Jean Loron, Beaujolais

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

Only black grape variety grown in Beaujolais, Gamay reveals a very different nature in Beaujolais soils. The wine is produced from old vines, with a deep root system which gives the grape granite’s minerality and an intense level of concentration. Only good Beaujolais can offer such a deepness of fruity aromas.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Gamay : the Beaujolais signature’s grape variety since Philippe le Hardi, Duke of Burgundy, banned it from Burgundy in the 14th century ! When we talk about Gamay, it's usually black Gamay with white juice. This grape variety likes the clay-limestone and granite soils of the region. It gives us gourmet wines, round and fruity with intense colouring.

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

Maison Jean Loron is one of the oldest and largest vineyards owners in the south of Burgundy, located between Roche de Solutré in Mâconnais and Moulin à-Vent in Beaujolais. The winery was founded at the end of the 17th Century and is now 135 hectares wide, which is quite impressive for South Burgundy and Beaujolais !/p>

     Terroir

    Terroir

Located in the heart of the Pierres Dorées area (Golden Stones in French), facing south-east and west in the magnificent little village of Charnay, vines are planted on granitic soils and are 50 years older than the local average with a plot that will soon turn a hundred ! The very filtering soil gives water to the roots, but not too much, which is good for the Gamay, a lazy grape variety.<
