  1. Eole Rouge 2011, Domaine d'Eole, Vallée du Rhône

Eole Rouge 2011, Domaine d'Eole, Vallée du Rhône

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

« That is a cuvee with a high alcoholic degree: 14,5°. It is ideal to match with your main dish, but you should probably plan a nap in the afternoon ;) However, this cuvee is very well-balanced, and surprisingly, the alcoholic degree is quite pleasant. You will probably enjoy its complex nose with bay tree, juniper berry and garrigue aromas. Share it during a long dinner with old friends! »

    Feuille

     Grape variety

This cuvee from the Eole domain is a blend of three grape varieties that perfectly match together: Grenache, Shiraz and Carignan. This blend enables to produce well-balanced wines. Grenache brings generosity and roundness, Shiraz brings a nice color and strong red fruits and violet aromas, while Carignan brings structure and increases the aging potential of the wine.

     Anecdote

     A wine, a family

This domain starts to be famous, and I am sure that it will have a lot of success within the coming years. This domain was created bytwo men that are passionate by vinegrapes and seduced by this exceptional terroir: Matthias Wimmer, a sommelier that lives wine, and Christian Raimont, owner of the domain since 1996.

     Terroir

    Terroir

Eole domain is spread on 30 hectares in Eygalières, at the bottom of Alpilles, in Provence (South of France). Provence is a dry region, not ideal for culture. But, the alliance of these weather conditions and a soil that is not very fertile makes of this place an exceptional terroir. Grapevines are planted on sandy limestone soils with a lot of stones. Subsoil is deep and filtering, that enables to drain and heat up soil.

  2. Château d'Eck 2012, Pessac Léognan

    Château d'Eck 2012, Pessac Léognan

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

It’s as if the beauty of Château d’Eck reflects on its wines like the sun in a mirror. This magnificent castle makes the pride of the Pessac-Léognan appellation. The wine displays aromas of cherry and wood, especially cedar. If you wish, you can keep it in your cellar so its aromas and texture evolve: it can ages up to seven years!

    Feuille

    Grape variety

The merlot is fruity and low in tannins. The cabernet sauvignon is strong in tannins and displays mainly vegetal aromas. The two were made to complete each other. And that is what Bordeaux is all about since the blend merlot and cabernet sauvignon is the most typical one there. But I would like to draw your attention to the petit verdot. It has always been present in Bordeaux, and since it is not sensitive to rot, it is more and more grown as the winemakers try to cut on pesticides.

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

Located in Cadaujac just outside of Bordeaux, the Château d’Eck is a real medieval castle where one of the best wines of Pessac-Léognan is made. The castle was the first property of the Duke of Aquitaine and then it belonged to the King of England when the region was under English domination. François Eck inherited the castle and the estate in 1824 and gave it his own name!

     Terroir

    Terroir

The Pessac-Léognan appel-lation was created 30 years ago to distinguish the best part of the Graves appellation. Graves is a big appellation that got its name from the stones that lie on the ground (Graves means pebble in old French) and helps the grapes to mature by accumulating the heat during the day and redistributing it during the night.

  3. Bellegrave du Poujeau, Haut-Médoc 2011

    Bellegrave du Poujeau, Haut-Médoc 2011

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

This little vineyard in Médoc is a nice discovery. The attack is very pleasant and the aromatic profile of this wine is complex, mainly based on strawberry and blackcurrant aromas perfectly enhanced by a marked acidity. This wine is at the beginning of its peak, but if you enjoy tertiary aromas, it will easily wait for you a few years in your cellar.

    Feuille

Merlot and cabernet sauvignon is the most widespread blend in Bordeaux. Cabernet franc, without being rare, is less common. It’s the main variety in Chinon in the Loire Valley and it is often used in Bordeaux to complete the blends with its fresh red berries aromas.

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

Château Bellegrave du Poujeau is a typical example of what is called a gardener’s wine. With only 4 hectares, Jean-Pierre Cantelaube can give a lot of attention to each of his vine stocks. For example, they are all pruned individually which allow to reach the highest level of ripeness possible each time, so there are no more bad vintages!

     Terroir

    Terroir

The vines are planted on a particularly thick ground of Graves. These big and hard round pebbles do not retain water and nutrients on the contrary to the layer of clay these lie on. Therefore, vines’ roots have to struggle through the pebbles to get their water and nutrients in the clay. It is a good thing as it forces the vine to be stronger so as to reveal the whole potential of the grapes!

  4. Château Lamothe Belair, 2011, rouge, Bergerac

Château Lamothe Belair, 2011, rouge, Bergerac

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

This month, I am happy to present a wine from Bergerac. It is rich and well structured, with very intense flavours. It is very smooth on the palate and shows smoky aromas of oak. I would definitely recommend serving this wine with a beautiful piece of beef, why not some tasty beef from Bergerac where cow breeding is prevalent. If you wish, you can also let it age in you cellar.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

This wine is a blend of most of the grape varieties you find in this part of France for red wines: merlot, cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon and malbec. Merlot gives the wine flavours of red fruits and softens the tannins. The Cabernet Sauvignon and the Malbec balance that with a strong body and spicy and smoky flavours.

     Anecdote

     A winemaker, a family

When we think about Bergerac, we usually think about the very good sweet wines this terroir provides Montbazillac, Montravel or Saussignac). But the fact is that you can find great red wines in the vineyards of Bergerac, such as the Château LamotheBelair, that was awarded several times. Château LamotheBelair is managed by StéphanePuyol who is the proud owner of two Châteaux in Saint-Emilion with evocative names:Barberousse (Barbarossa) and Montremblant!

     Terroir

    Terroir

Château Lamothe Belair is located 12km from Saint-Emilion, on the extension of the hills of Saint-Emilion. The soil is clay and limestone as most of the land in the Bordeaux/Southwest area. This kind of soil retains a lot of water and keeps it fresh, balancing the effects of the sun in order to keep the hint of freshness the wine needs.

Croix de Chabot 2011, Maison Chapoutier, Vallée du Rhône

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

« When Michel Chapoutier, a winemaker considered as a god in the Rhône Valley, and Yannick Alléno, a famous chef (who gets 3 stars in the Michelin guide) met, they immediately decided to produce a cuvee together. They produced this cuvee in order to put it on the wine list of Yannick Alléno’s restaurants. It is a gastronomic wine, that will probably surprise you with its lard mouth, slightly smoked. I would like to thank Michel Chapoutier again for letting us get the remaining stock of this cuvee. »

     Anecdote

     A wine, a family

Michel Chapoutier is a lover of grapevines! Nowadays, Michel is very famous in the Rhône Valley and his wines are very successful, especially in the international market. This success can be explained by Michel’s motto: “Don’t follow or copy, but initiate, create and pave the way”.

     Terroir

    Terroir

Grapevines of this Saint-Joseph are planted on a shallow soil, composed of granite. It is a typical terroir of the Saint-Joseph designation. Michel Chapoutier uses head-pruned vines, that are thirty years old. Vinegrapes benefit from a lot of wind, that enables grapes to be well-ventilated and that avoids the development of mould.

  6. Artésis Rouge 2015, Maison Ogier, Côtes du Rhône

Artésis Rouge 2015, Maison Ogier, Côtes du Rhône

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

Based in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Ogier is a major winery of the southern Rhône Valley. Through the years, they developed strong connections with the best winegrowers in the area. Therefore, they are able to get the best grapes ! You might remember we already presented the white version of Artesis. I am very glad to present you this month Artesis red which displays nice aromas of blackcurrant and garrigue. The softness on the palate is particularly flattering.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Grenache and syrah put together is the most common blend in southern Rhône Valley. So what is the point of adding mourvèdre ? This variety almost never vinified by itself brings more tannin and gives the wine more structure. But the best part is these typical aromas of white pepper that discreetly enriches Artesis with.

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

Antoine Ogier started the Ogier saga in 1859 by establishing himself as a wine merchant in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Generation after generation, his successors used the family’s credibility in order to build a great network of winegrowers everywhere in the Rhône Valley. That’s how Ogier could develop its own style of fruity and perfectly balanced fresh wines./p>

     Terroir

    Terroir

Grapes used in order to elaborate Artesis 2015 were selected on two main parcels: one is located in the Aigues Valley where the soil is made from sandstone and limestone, and the other on the rocky plateau of Plan de Dieu and its big pebbles. These soils gave different level of maturity to grapes, and blending those allowed the winemaking team to reach the perfect balance between ripeness and freshness.

Le Prince, Vieilles Vignes 2012, Domaine de Rocheville, Saumur Champigny

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

I have the pleasure to share with you Le Prince, Old Vines. Finding a Saumur Champigny of this quality with attractive prices became quite a hard task because of several small harvests. The vineyard of Rocheville is increasingly known for its quality wines and its magnificent estate (we invite you to go there, I was received as if I was a Prince ...).

  9. Mondeuse 2017, Adrien Vacher, Vin de savoie

Mondeuse 2017, Adrien Vacher, Vin de savoie

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

Mondeuse is one of my favourite grape varieties and it is from Savoie. It’s with Mondeuse that the greatest red wines of the region are elaborated. I like this juicy sensation that it creates, well balanced by firm tannins. Moreover, it has a lot of acidity, which underlines the crispy side of the red berries aromas. Eventually, good Mondeuses display some enjoyable peppery aromas as it is the case here.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Mondeuse is, as most grape variety grown in Savoie, relatively rare outside of the Alps. Its perfect balance between tannin and acidity make it quite easy to drink it relatively young but also allow to keep it up to 5 years in the cellar where ageing will give it more ripe flavours. Some expert say that Mondeuse is halfway between Burgundy’s Pinot Noir and Northern Rhône’s Syrah.

Mondeuse is known to pair well with charcurterie and cheeses, so it’s sold mainly in the Alps. Moreover, the fact that it can age is a good thing in areas where it’s hard to make the same amount of wine every year. However, it is also now grown in Australia and in the United-States on very different terroirs. Maybe those experiments are the beginning of the rise of Mondeuse! /p>

    Winemaker

Year after year, Sylviane Garcin Cathiard is building a small empire in the Bordeaux wines. She bought four different Châteaux in fifteen years : Château Branon, Clos l’Eglise Pomerol, Château Barde-Haut, and of course the Château Haut-Bergey.

     Terroir

    Terroir

The terroir of the Château Haut-Bergey is spread on 25 hectares of vineyards cultivated on an argilo-siliceous subsoil, mix of sand and clay. We often say that the clay soils produce wines that are solid, strong and alcoholic while the siliceous soils produce fine wines, with subtle aromatic hints. The union of the clay and the silica sand guarantees a terroir of high quality.

Clémence 2016, Domaine Philippe et Vincent Jaboulet, Crozes-Hermitage

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

As it is a world class winery, Jaboulet is one of the most famous names in the Rhône Valley. However, Philippe and Vincent made the choice to get out of the Family winery so as to grow smaller parcels and make exactly the wine they love. And they did well as Clémence is one of my favourite wine and each vintage is in my personal cellar.

Founded in 1834, Jaboulet is one of the most famous wineries in the area (and in France as it is quite big). After 30 years being in charge of the hundreds of hectares of vineyard of the family, Philippe wanted to think smaller to make better. That’s why he founded with his son Vincent his own Domaine. /p>

     Terroir

    Terroir

Crozes-Hermitage faces Saint-Joseph just on the other side of the river. Both have syrah in common, but they produces quite different expressions of this variety. Jaboulet’s vines are located in the south of the appellation on a light soil that lets the roots growing very deep into the ground. Therefore, vine stocks capture a lot of different nutrient that end in the berries which gives its high level of complexity to the wine.

Bonificat 2001, Vignobles Marie Maria, Madiran

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

People of Madiran have been growing vines since the 5th Century. Wines of Madiran are known to have a great ageing potential : that’s why we are proud to present this month a wine from 2001 ! It’s indeed a pretty rare opportunity to taste a 15 years old wine, especially when it has kept so much strength while developing nice evolved aromas of leather and a flattering soft texture.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Grown almost nowhere else outside of French South West, tannat is the emblematic variety of Madiran. Its name comes from the word tannin as this variety is known to be especially tannic. In the vines, you can spot it at first glance thanks to its unique deep purple colour given by this exceptionally high concentration in tannin.

Marie Maria vineyards belong to a group of winemakers from Madiran who have their own estates on the side and who gathered to buy the most uphill terroirs they could. Why did they do so ? The opinion of the sommelier

This Comté Tolosan is incredibly bright ! Plunge your nose in the glass and discover this delicate fragrance of acacia and honey. Can you feel it ? When the wine met my palate, the result matched my expectations : balanced, ample and concentrated, giving the wine a beautiful aromatic persistence on the finish. There are aromas of brioche and butter, and intermingled with notes of honey, I felt back in my lovely childhood days !

Domain of Crampilh : a hymn to love. In the 1800s, Sabin Oulie, the mayor of a small village, chose to plant a vineyard and gave his estate the name of his beloved Melanie Crampilh. Since, time went by, and nowadays, the 4th generation is in charge. Bruno Oulié strives to perpetuate the tradition by producing wines with a lot of power and character but balanced by finesse and fruit./p>

The vineyard covers 30 hectares of vines, planted on the slopes of Aurions-Idernes on soils made of clay and silica. Te siliceous soils, made up of crystalline rocks, enable the finesse and give the wines subtle floral notes (here aromas of acacia). Clay soils offer harder, firmer and more alcoholic wines, giving the character of the fnish on this wine.

This new vintage of Marquès del Villar was love at first sip ! This rich wine is as original as it is warm and flattering on the palate. Dear subscribers, why don’t you close your eyes for a moment. You’re lying down in fresh grass next to a tree, in front of the Mont Ventoux in southern France, just where Provence begins. Your nose gets fresh aromas of citrus fruits led by a delicate note of lemon. In the mouth, the silky texture is an enchantment. A nice minerality tickles your tongue, and gives a nice mouthfeel and length on the palate.

Roussane, one of the greatest variety used for southern white wine, is mainly used in the Rhône valley and in Provence. It’s not that usual to find it blended with vermentino, another southern white variety, but they fit perfectly together. Vermentinon gives thisk wines with a creamy texture and fruity aromas, roussane brings vegetal flavours, minerality and freshness. The whole results in a very balanced and elegant wine.

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

What makes Ventoux unique is the fact it is the only appellation in the area to be more famous for its white wines than for its reds. Leonard Rozen, who bought the wine estate in 2011, very understood this specificity and decided to bet on White wines ; hence, he lead his team to replace parcels previously planted with black varieties by white ones. However, Rozen not only planted new vines, but also grew one of the most famous garden in the region; therefore, your wine was elaborated in perfect weather conditions in a breathtaking scenery !/p>

    La Chapelle-Lescours 2011, Château l’Evêché, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

Château l’Evêché is ruled by skilled people ! Indeed, we already chose for My VitiBox their Bordeaux Supérieur and their first Saint-Emilion Grand Cru. There is their second Grand Cru that impressed us. Tannins are fine, the aromatic structure is very elegant and we get magnificent scents of ripen black berries, typical from high class merlots. On the palate, you will also find fine tastes of liquorice and hints of chocolate.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Merlot is the most widespread variety in Saint-Emilion and cabernet franc the noblest (it’s the only variety in Château Cheval Blanc). This nice blend gives the best both varieties have to offer : merlot expresses its delightful aromas of ripe fruits like plum and cabernet franc brings fine tannins and warm spices’ flavours like liquorice.

Eight centuries old, Château l’Evêché really took off in 2008 when it was purchased by Jean-Sébastien Capdevielle. This former foie gras producer wanted to take a new challenge and spent four years looking for a terroir that inspired him. Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

This Côtes-du-Rhône’s purple flashy colour suggests that the wine will be fresh and lively. On the palate, the wine is indeed lively and comes along with soft melted tannins that enhance the explosive aromas of flowers and red berries. Just after swallowing, pay attention to the remarkable length of that wine and take the time to appreciate the nice spicy aftertaste. If you enjoy refined wines, this bottle is for you !

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Grenache and syrah are the two main varieties in the Côtes-du-Rhône appellation. However, grenache comes from Aragon, in Spain. It is one of the most cultivated grape varieties in the world and it spreads thanks to the intense aromas of ripened black and red berries it gives to the wines. Syrah brings to the wine fresh and spicy aromas hence ensuring the right level of complexity and a perfect balance.

Mas des Montagnes 2014, Maison Lorgeril, Languedoc

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

Lorgeril is becoming an institution in the Languedoc region. Their 6 vineyards’ reputation grows year after year. That’s why I am really glad to offer you the opportunity to taste Mas des Montagnes. As its name shows (montagne means mountain), this wine was elaborated on a high terroir which gives to Languedoc’s wines a lot of freshness and a delicate touch. It also reveals the deep spicy aromas syrah can develop when submitted to chilly winds.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Thanks to the spicy flavours it gives, syrah is easily recognizable in this wine. However, grenache is really essential in the blend. Indeed, it brings fruity aromas like blackcurrant that balance syrah’s peppery aromas but it also brings creaminess. That’s why Mas des Montagne’s texture is so smooth and so flattering on the palate !

Vignes du Prieuré 2014, Château Gigognan, Côtes du Rhône

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

The white version of “ Vignes du Prieuré ” was one of the first one ever to be in a VitiBox a few years ago. That’s why I’m so happy to present you this month its red version in an amazing vintage ! The colour changes, but pleasure is still there. The first nose smells orignal : it’s not that common to find aromas of fresh herbs and strawberry together. However, it’s enchanting ! Silky, fruity and powerful, it feels like biting in a ripe fruit just picked up from the tree. It’s intense and refreshing !

    Feuille

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

Vines were planted in Château Gigognan when Gaule was a province of the Roman Empire. Later, the Archbishops of Avignon made this area their land along with neighbouring Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Then, various aristocratic families owned successively the vineyard, which is always good as they obviously wanted to have good wine at their table. Nowadays, Jacques and Sophie Callet perpetuate the grandeur of Château Gigognan by making wines worthy of being on the best tables./p>

     Terroir

    Terroir

Planted on a sunny terroir, Château Gigognan’s vines are also in a place where strong winds blow, notably the warm and powerful mistral. Thus, berries ripen but keep their freshness thanks to the wind. This kind of terroir gives amazing wines : the high level of sugar and alcohol given by the sun is balanced by wind’s freshness, and the result is a powerful wine with a great length.

Château du Breuil 2012, Château Cissac, Haut- Médoc

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

It’s a very typical Cru Bourgeois that I chose this month. The robe is dark and deep. The nose is complex, with hints of spice, and is very promising. On the palate, I was impressed by its perfect balance and its amazing structure. The aromas of violet and red berries perfectly pair with the aromas of licorice, sign of delicate aging in oak barrels. A very refined Cru Bourgeois, quite classical in its structure but quite original in its aromas.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

If cabernet-sauvignon and merlot are expected as there are some in almost all the wines in Bordeaux, the presence of malbec is a bit more surprising. Malbec used to be quite widespread in Bordeaux until the sixties. It’s used to give more structure to the wine thanks to its usually thin but abundant tannins.
