    The opinion of the sommelier

    A unique wine by many ways. To begin, it’s one of the first (if not the first) wine from 2018 vintage you’ll taste (at least from Europe). Second, the blend is pretty rare at it’s not often that muscat and sauvignon are blended. However, this innovative idea is a match: sauvignon’s acidity balances well muscat’s sugar. Moreover, all bottles are different: a new printing process was used to make there would not be twice the same label.

    Inédit is the story of two varieties who never really met before but really went on very well. Muscat displays flavours of flowers and exotic fruits and sauvignon adds aromas of citrus fruits. The whole results in a nice complexity !

     Located just at the south of Montpellier, l’Inedit’s vines have been grown by the Jeanjean family for decades on a red clay soil. Clay is a cold matter that brings a lot of water to the roots in an area that regularly suffers from draught. It is an ideal mix to elaborate great white wines.

    I am really glad to present you Château d’Epiré as I think it is the best way to discover one of the best appellations in the Loire Valley for white wines: Savennières. The smell is expressive, with flavours of green apple and lemon. The taste is fresh and the finish displays displays very nice mineral aromas, typical from Savennières. Do not forget to serve it chilled, between 8 and 10°C!

    In Savennières, things are simple as there is only one variety planted: chenin. This variety fully expresses its potential on grounds of limestone, which was also used to build the Châteaux de la Loire. Just remember that chenin is an elegant variety with refined aromas of tree fruits, dried fruits, citrus fruits, white flowers and even honey. Sounds good, doesn’t it ?

    Many people in the Savennières area consider the Château d’Epiré an historical treasure. Indeed, it is the only vineyard that has remained in the same family, the Bizard family, since the 17th Century. Nowadays, it is Luc who manages the vineyard with the will of giving to his wines the mineral aromas typical from Savennières and to perpetuate the family traditions.

     Savennières’reputation comes from its dry white wines, often called the « Grands Crus » of the Loire Valley. The terroir of Savennières is located in a microclimate that offers the benefits of not having too many thunderstorms. Thus, the grapes mature faster and better than around the appellation.

    Film director and producer, Francis Ford Coppola won five Oscars and two Palme d’or at the Cannes Festival. Few know that Francis is also the owner of a vineyard in the Napa Valley (California), which produces good wines at an excellent quality price ratio. Rosso 2011 is a light and fruity wine that will match simple and tasty dishes.

    The grapes’ blend is interesting. Syrah donates a velvet texture to the wine; cabernet sauvignon gives them structure and aromas of red fruits. Petite syrah contributes to give body whereas the zinfandel, typical of this region, gives sweetness.

    Francis Ford Coppola has about as much passion for fine wine as he does for great film. And his passion is actually hereditary: during the Prohibition, Agostino Coppola produced his own wine in the basement of his flat in New York City.

    The Coppola vineyard is located in California, in the wine region of Lodi, 50 km south of Sacramento, in the hearth of the famous Napa Valley. There, sunny days alternate with fresh nights and this slows the maturity process of grapes and increases their body and taste. The rivers Mokelumne and Cosumnes enrich the granitic soil of minerals.

     The Mancèdre winery extends for 11 hectares on the east side of Pessac-Léognan. The vineyard flourishes on a soil made of gravels coming from the Pyrenees. Gravels give strength and lightness to wine. Grapevines also benefit from an excellent hydric regulation and natural poverty of soil, elements necessary to obtain ripened and concentred grapes.

    It’s been 15 years the Reboul family has been owning the Château d’Estoublon. Since the 15th century, this Château is one of the main wheat producers in Provence. Its name comes from the term “Estouble” that means wheat in Provencal, the language of Provence.

    It is with pleasure that I present this month a wine produced in my region: Burgundy. To be more specific, this fantastic wine is from Mercurey, the largest appellation of the Côte Chalonnaise. Les Crêts 2012 is awell balanced and fruity wine with notes of blackcurrant and gooseberry. To me, it is a perfect example of the refinement of Pinot Noir.

    If you need to know one thing about wines from Burgundy, it is that when they are allowed to have a specific appellation, it means that they are made from a single variety of grape: Chardonnay for white wines and Pinot noir for red wines. Pinot Noir is a delicate grape, sensitive to soil and climate.It is much less robust than Cabernet Sauvignon for example. However, it can, if the best conditions are gathered, give the best wines in the world. Generally pale in colour, this variety often has a good alcohol content and acidity, with fine and elegant tannins.

    Saviez-vous que le village de Mercurey porte le nom du messager des dieux de la mythologie romaine, Mercure. En effet, les Romains ont dédié un temple à cette divinité dans ce village. C’est aussi dans ce village que la famille de Suremain s’est installée en 1870, et c’est làbas qu’elle cultive la vigne depuis. Yves est d’ailleurs le président du syndicat des vignerons de Mercurey. Solidarité et esprit de famille, des valeurs que portent haut et fort les Suremain !

     Les Crêts sont nichés sur 1.3 hectares au sommet du coteau (la crête) et avec une exposition sud. Le sol est issu d’une marne très calcaire; en effet lorsqu’on laboure la terre en profondeur, on trouve de grosses plaques de craie ! Extrêmement poreuse, cette roche laisse l’eau filtrer en profondeur avant de la restituer à la vigne, donnant des vins fins exprimant les arômes propres au cépage. C’est un sol idéal pour laisser le pinot noir exprimer sa finesse.

    2009 is one of the best vintages Saint-Emilion ever produced. One could even compare it to the legendary 2005 vintage, known to have been the best vintage in Bordeaux for decades. Thus, it was important to me to select a wine that could introduce you to great Bordeaux vintages. And of all the wines I tasted, Château Grand Lartigue was the one showing best this wonderful combination of strength, fruit and tannins that 2009 gave us. This wine is to be paired with you best meals!

    Cabernet franc is widespread in the right bank of Bordeaux, but also in the Loire Valley ! The terroir allows it to reach maturity one week before the cabernet sauvignon does, which allows the winemakers to take more time to protect the grapes during the harvest. It is widely grown in Saint- Emilion, and is even the main variety used for one of the most famous wine in the world: Château Cheval Blanc (60%). It is less tannic than cabernet sauvignon, so it ages faster and can be drunk earlier.

    Pierre Chollet is the director of Château Grand Lartigue, a property which covers 5 hectares in Saint-Emilion. His company Vitis Vintage resurrected this forgotten estate in 2001. They built a new winery and completely changed the agricultural process. For example, Chollet decided to stop using chemical fertilizer.

     The terroir of Saint-Emilion is one of the most famous in the world, and there is reason for that: it is also one of the best ! The ground is a mix of very old sand and wet clay. Moreover, the rules of the appellation are very strict: winemakers cannot make more than 40 hl of wine per hectare, and the wine has to age at least 12 months in oak barrels.

    Full-bodied and heady, this wine is rather manly. That’s how the wines from Vacqueyras are! I really enjoyed the fact that its texture is so smooth and that it lasts for so long in the mouth after you swallowed it. You will remember these flavours for a pretty long time!

    The wine is a blend of 70% of grenache and 30% of syrah. This blend is rather typical in the Rhône region. Grenache brings alcohol and red fruits flavours when it is grown on a dry and stony soil like this one. Syrah gives the wine powerful aromas of spices, black pepper and liquorice.

    The estate is located in a quite mountainous area as it is known for two things: its rock climbing spots and its wines. On 80 acres, this family estate produces wines famous for being really concentrated, rich in flavours and powerful.

     The vines are planted on quite a poor soil, made of clay and limestone mixed with pebbles. When it comes to vines, a poor soil is not necessarily a problem because it stresses the vines that therefore grow its roots deeper into the ground to find nutrients. And a vine that has to work more produces better grapes!

    Do you know the Roussette de Savoie? For the last few years, I have been spending the winters in Chamonix, in the Savoie region.Thus, Roussette is a grape variety that I drink and enjoy almost every week. I thought it would be nice to choose for once a wine from the mountains so as to discover the aromas of this widely unknown terroir that is Savoie. I hope you will enjoy the flavours of honeysuckle and honey. It is the perfect wine for a raclette party or a crème brulée.

    In French, “Altesse” means “Highness”. This grape variety was brought back to France by the Dukes of Savoie. At the beginning, only the aristocracy was allowed to drink wines made from this grape variety. Now, France is a Republic, and the variety is called “Roussette de Savoie”. It gives dry white wines, with very powerful aromas of fresh white flowers and citrus fruits.

    In the Savoie region, winemaking is often a family business. The Vulliens are no exception to this rule. Indeed, Jean Vullien, who created the estate, was himself son and grandson of winemakers. He is proud to carry on the tradition. And he shares his pride with his wife Jeanine, and his two sons David and Olivier who also work at the estate.

     The terroir of the mountains give very specific wines. Indeed, in order to find its nutrients through the rocks, the vine has to grow very long roots. Moreover, the Roussette vines are grown in a very windy area. The consequence is that the grapes grown there have a lot of freshness to offer.

    I selected this wine from Domaine Jean-Maurice Raffault because even if it was just bottled as it is the 2014 vintage, it already shows a lot of richness. Its aromas of strawberry and spices are typical of the Loire Valley, but the aromas of banana are more unexpected. Having fun with wine by being surprised is something I love. To enjoy the wine even more, pair it with a tripe sausage or a camembert cheese.

    Cabernet franc is one of the oldest varieties of the Bordeaux region, where it is from. It is still cultivated by some of the most prestigious Château like Cheval-Blanc in Saint-Emilion. The fact that it matures so quickly (it is quite often the first variety harvested in Bordeaux) allows it to be cultivated in the Loire Valley, even if it is a colder region.

    In 1693, Mathurin Bottreau, ancestor of theRaffault family, became the owner of the family’s first vines. Since then, 14 generations have worked on the development of the estate! Rodolphe Raffault, now in charge of the vineyard, is constantly looking for innovation in the making of his wines. He was among the first ones implementing malolactic fermentation in Chinon to soften the tastes of the wines.

     The town of Chinon is located on the banks of the Vienne River in Indre-et-Loire. The vineyards of Chinon are located in a really unique microclimate that reminds some places around the Mediterranean Sea. The soil consists almost entirely of erosional scree and gravels on top of rather hard limestone.

    Bordeaux is mostly famous thanks to the wines elaborated in Médoc on the left bank of the Gironde River. The dominant variety there is cabernet sauvignon. On the right bank, merlot is the main variety so the wines are known to be fruitier and less tannic. This one has spent 6 months aging in oak barrels: do you feel the aromas of wood and vanilla?

    Merlot is the main variety in the Bordeaux region. The tale is that its name comes from the blackbirds, merles in French, who love to peck the grapes of merlot. It blends very well with the cabernet sauvignon known for its tannins. Indeed, merlot gives balance to the blend by bringing nice aromas of red berries, plum and spices.

    When Jacques Chardat arrived in 1991, the Château Lacaussade Saint-Martin was kind of a sleeping beauty. This oenologist from the University of Bordeaux was very ambitious, and started buying new vines to improve the global quality of the wine. More than 20 years later, the vineyard is now 50 hectares (it was 18 hectares in 1991) and produces a wine appreciated by some of the most influential wine critics.

     Along the Gironde River, the Chateau Lacaussade Saint-Martin is located on a poor ground made of a limestone vein, specific to the terroir which name is Blayais. As you might already know, the vines are fond of poor grounds. Indeed, the vine has to suffer from water stress in order to give concentrated fruits.

    I discovered this prestigious wine when I visited the vineyards of the Rhône Valley. The syrah offers in this case a perfect equilibrium between fruit and tannins and it offers a strong wine with a beautiful aromatic intensity !

    A cuvée 100% syrah produced by 20 to 50 years-old vineyards. The syrah is the most common red grape variety in the Crozes-Hermitage region. A surprising fact: some winemakers sometimes blend the syrah with a maximum of 15% of white grape varieties such as Marsanne or Roussanne!

    a tempty nose of pure syrah with a nice intensity, pleasant and lightly woody. Also the nose is dominated by flavours of wild flowers and red fruits such as the blackcurrant, together with notes of minerals such the shale.

    Franck Faugiers runs the winery, a family business since three generations. Passionate of rugby, Franck loves his work. He practices the environmental friendly viticulture with a real respect of fuits and vines and each year he participates to the hand-harvest with his team.

    The Hauts Chassis winery is located in the south of the area of the designation Crozes-Hermitage, in the village La Roche sur Glun. Crozes Hermitage is the most prestigious appellation of the northside of the Rhone Valley. The winery stretches for 32 acres where 29 are dedicated to the production of red wines. The soil is rich in glacial-fluvial sediments such as clay, sand and pebbles that have been transported by the glaciers and then transported by the rivers.

    This wine is perfect for a charcuterie board shared with friends on a summer night. This nice wine from Gaillac, made according to the principles of sustainable agriculture, displays complex aromas of cinnamon, gingerbread and red berries. On the palate, its creamy texture and its soft tannins show that it is a refined yet powerful wine.

    This wine is the opportunity to present you a pretty unknown variety: braucol ! Also called fer servadou, it basically is from the south-west of France where it is found in many of the most famous appellations of this region: Madiran, Gaillac, Béarn… Braucol is very appreciated by connoisseurs as it gives very elegant wines. Indeed, despite the presence of marked tannins (which by the way give a great aging potential!), the wine remains very fresh on the palate.

    Domaine de la Chanade puts forward the use of natural products during the agricultural process: no chemical pesticides here! The grapes are the result of a close collaboration between the team and Mother Nature. At My VitiBox, we particularly like (and encourage) this philosophy!

     The Domaine de la Chanade is located on the plateau Cordais, north of the Gaillac appellation. The vines are planted on southern exposed hillsides. Thus, the grapes spend more time in the sunlight which ensures a high level of concentration in sugars. This is why the wines of Domaine de la Chanade are so rich!

    This month, I give you the opportunity to taste a truly fantastic “Cru” from the Beaujolais. From the blueish reflections on the ruby colour, you can guess the strong aromatic intensity of the wine. I smell soft aromas of red and black berries, typical of Morgon. It is preferable to serve this wine at 15° and I suggest you pair it with a nice coq au vin.

    During the Middle Ages, gamay was the main variety grown in Burgundy. But in 1395, Philippe le Hardi, Duke of Burgundy, declared that gamay was “vile and deceitful” and therefore ordered its uprooting. During the following centuries, gamay was replaced by pinot noir in Burgundy but remained cultivated in Beaujolais ever since.

    Created in 1953 by René Gautier, Jacky’s father, Domaine de Colette was at the time only a few acres of vines abandoned since World War 1. René worked hard to revive the vines and bought several neighbouring plots and the estate eventually reached the size of 8 hectares. When he was only 17 years old, Jacky inherited his father’s estates + his uncle’s. He merged both in 1994 to make a big estate of 14 hectares.

     One of the specificities of Beaujolais is the use of carbonic maceration at the beginning of the winemaking process. Carbonic maceration consists in putting non-crushed grape clusters in sealed vessels. By making the fermentation process slower and avoiding oxidation, this technique widely used in Morgon gives the wine its particularly fruity aromas.

    This wine from Château les Donats is absolutely delicious and I am really proud to present it to you ! Very typical of the dry white wines from Bergerac, this batch displays nice aromas of citrus fruits and flowers wonderfully enhanced by a strong acidity that gives all this amazing liveliness to the wine. To pair it perfectly, I suggest you serve it with grilled white fish or oysters.

    Sauvignon blanc in the most common white variety in the Loire Valley and in Bordeaux. It is known to give to the wines liveliness and refreshing aromas. In Bordeaux and Bergerac, it is often blend with sémillon, a very sweet variety, so as to balance its high level of sugar with acidity.

    In 1994, Patrick Somers, heir of a family of Belgian wine merchants and passionate about winemaking, decided to produce his own wine. To do so, he visited a few vineyards, and felt in love with Château les Donats that he bought and entirely renovated. To keep on improving the quality of the wines, he was joined in 2011 by the oenologist Olivier Verhelst who implemented new cultivation techniques and updated the winemaking process./p>

     Château les Donats’ vines cover 15 hectares on the sides a valley digged throughout the millenniums by the Dordogne River in the heart of Périgord. The plots have various exposures to the sun. This diversity allows choosing just the right exposure for each of the six grapes varieties that are grown in the vineyard.

    Mercurey is not any appellation in Burgundy. Indeed, it is the biggest appellation in the Côte Chalonnaise sub-region and it is known for the intensity of red berries aromas the terroir gives to pinot noir there. This batch is particularly remarkable as it blends the aromas typical of Mercurey with refined woody notes that bring more complexity and smoky aromas. A great wine !

    Wines made from pinot noir have the specificity of displaying a light colour. Tasted during their youth, the wines have fresh aromas of cherry, raspberry and blackberry. As the wine ages, these aromas evolve into more ripened fruits and leather. The good news is that only the pinot noirs elaborated on the best terroirs can age, which is absolutely the case with this wonderful Mercurey that can age up to 6 years.

    In 1875, Antoine Rodet, son of a grocer, inherited a few hectares of land after he married the daughter of a farmer. At that time, the area of Chalon-sur-Saône was going through an economic boom and the young Antoine took the opportunity to invest in agricultural equipment to turn his farm into a vineyard. A few years later, his ambitious son Antonin took over, gave the vineyard his name, and developed it, building the basis of the large and famous winery that Rodet is nowadays.

     The vineyards in Mercurey benefit from a special terroir as it lies on a hilly relief that alternates gentle and steep slopes. This kind of relief has a huge advantage: it allows winemakers to harvest grapes that were grown under different exposures to the sun and with different levels of water stress so as to elaborate wine with a lot of complexity.

    Surprise ! There are not only rosé wines in Provence… Indeed, if the region that lies just behind the Riviera is better known for its rosés, there are amazing terroirs for great red wines. Mas Cadenet displays a deep cherry colour and exhales a powerful nose that let guess a lot of complexity. The palate confirms it. The aromas of spices and blueberry are perfectly enhanced by fine tannins and a bit of freshness. Very nice !

    Grenache is the most used variety in Provence to produce red wines. And indeed, it is absolutely perfect for this terroir and its weather ! This variety, which is also the main one in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, a similar terroir, like rocky grounds and dry weathers and can face violent winds, which is important on hills next to the sea.

    Since 1813, 7 generations of Negrel have been improving the 45 hectares of Mas Cadenet next to Aix en Provence. The show goes on nowadays with Mathieu, who pursues the family ambition to become a model in the region. Behind, there is a long story of cultivating vines: indeed, an amphora from the Roman period was found in the vines, suggesting that there was already winemaking there 2000 years ago./p>

     Located on a 250 meters high plateau, Mas Cadenet’s vines found the perfect soil with this ground covered with gravels, a very typical phenomenon in Provence. This dry soil gives extremely low yields, an unavoidable condition if you want to get concentrated and structured wines like Negrel.

    Based in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Ogier is a major winery of the southern Rhône Valley. Through the years, they developed strong connections with the best winegrowers in the area. Therefore, they are able to get the best grapes ! You might remember we already presented the white version of Artesis. I am very glad to present you this month Artesis red which displays nice aromas of blackcurrant and garrigue. The softness on the palate is particularly flattering.

    Grenache and syrah put together is the most common blend in southern Rhône Valley. So what is the point of adding mourvèdre ? This variety almost never vinified by itself brings more tannin and gives the wine more structure. But the best part is these typical aromas of white pepper that discreetly enriches Artesis with.

    Antoine Ogier started the Ogier saga in 1859 by establishing himself as a wine merchant in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Generation after generation, his successors used the family’s credibility in order to build a great network of winegrowers everywhere in the Rhône Valley. That’s how Ogier could develop its own style of fruity and perfectly balanced fresh wines./p>

     Grapes used in order to elaborate Artesis 2015 were selected on two main parcels: one is located in the Aigues Valley where the soil is made from sandstone and limestone, and the other on the rocky plateau of Plan de Dieu and its big pebbles. These soils gave different level of maturity to grapes, and blending those allowed the winemaking team to reach the perfect balance between ripeness and freshness.

    Château l’Evêché is ruled by skilled people ! Indeed, we already chose for My VitiBox their Bordeaux Supérieur and their first Saint-Emilion Grand Cru. There is their second Grand Cru that impressed us. Tannins are fine, the aromatic structure is very elegant and we get magnificent scents of ripen black berries, typical from high class merlots. On the palate, you will also find fine tastes of liquorice and hints of chocolate.

    Merlot is the most widespread variety in Saint-Emilion and cabernet franc the noblest (it’s the only variety in Château Cheval Blanc). This nice blend gives the best both varieties have to offer : merlot expresses its delightful aromas of ripe fruits like plum and cabernet franc brings fine tannins and warm spices’ flavours like liquorice.

    Eight centuries old, Château l’Evêché really took off in 2008 when it was purchased by Jean-Sébastien Capdevielle. This former foie gras producer wanted to take a new challenge and spent four years looking for a terroir that inspired him. He eventually found Château l’Evêché where he did a huge work with his team to produce a few years later great wines considered to be rising stars in Saint-Emilion./p>

     The vines used to elaborate La Chapelle-Lescours are planted on a soil made of fine clay and large heavy round pebbles called graves. This kind of soil perfectly regulates the water supply to make sure vine stocks get all the nutrients they need but are not flooded which could result in diluted wines.

    This new vintage of Marquès del Villar was love at first sip ! This rich wine is as original as it is warm and flattering on the palate. Cinnamon and forest fruits create a mesmerizing mix and the whole is carried by a remarkably soft texture. I advise you to taste this wine in your sofa under an air of Carmen to fly to Spain

    Tempranillo is the king of the wine-growing region of Rioja, where this grape variety was born. Thus, this represents a total of 70% of the total production of the vineyard. A small anecdote : its name is a derivative of the Spanish word « temprano », meaning early. This name makes perfect sense as it ripens several weeks earlier than most Spanish red grape varieties !

    Les Passeurs de Vins is a wine story, but above all, a friends’ story. Under the name of « Lionel Osmin et Cie », Lionel Osmin and five of his Basque friends discover the most beautiful vineyards in northern Spain, in order to obtain the best grapes and to elaborate original wines with their own values. The more the merrier, another huge amateur just came to support this club of joyful passionates, Imanol Harinordoquy (former national French rugby player), Basque indeed !/p>

     Rioja certainly is the oldest and most famous appellation in Spain for those red wines which unveil unsuspected qualities. Planted 400 meters above sea level and protected by three mountain ranges, the 60,000 hectares of vineyards benefit from a specific geographical location which favors a particular microclimatic development adapted to the grape harvest.
