San de Guilhem, Kaleidoscope 2016, Osmin, Comte Tolosan

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

If you want to surprise your friends, throw a tasting around Kaleidoscope ! This previously unseen blend of four grape varieties from both Alsace and Rhône Valley but planted in the Southwest offers delicious aromas of rose, peach, eucalyptus and honey. On the palate, Kaleidoscope is enchanting : complex and fresh, this cuvée is a real jewel, unique of its kind !

Lionel Osmin was born in the Southwest region and created his winery in 2010, Lionel Osmin & Cie, to share the amazing potential of his region’s vineyards. From Jurançon to Cahors, from Gaillac to Bergerac and Marcillac, Damiens Sartori, oenologist star of the Osmin winery wants to make you discover the grape varieties and the terroirs of this region. Originality and conviviality, are the most important values of the "Osmin spirit"./p>

    Terroir

The vines grow on hillsides made of clay and limestone. The loamy soil brought to the vineyard all the nutrients needed for its development, and kept the freshness to return it to the vine when the temperatures got warmer during summer. The combination of these characteristics allows a slow maturation and a perfect extraction of the aromas.

  2. Le Secret de Sainte Frivole 2015, Domaine Mauro-Guicheney, Côtes de Duras

Le Secret de Sainte Frivole 2015, Domaine Mauro-Guicheney, Côtes de Duras

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

This wine was a very pleasant surprise ! The appellation Côtes de Duras is pretty well known for its red wines, but this one, Le Secret de Sainte Frivole, shows that it also produces excellent white wines. The nose is characterized by a feeling of a very fresh and delicate wine with citrus aromas. Take a sip and try to detect this little iodized taste that echoes the oceanic climate of Southwestern wines. To match obviously with seafood !

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Contrary to what the name leads us to believe, the sauvignon gris (grey) is rather pale yellow. Characterized by clusters and berries of small size, it gives powerful and full-bodied wines with aromas slightly heavier than sauvignon blanc. The blend thus takes its full meaning. The sauvignon blanc brings a slight acidity and vivacity in the mouth, which balances the wine.

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

Mauro-Guicheney’s family works with respect for traditions and the environment. Corinne and Didier cultivate with passion and knowhow the 30 hectares of vineyards of the family property, owned for half a century. Both passionate about vine-growing, they unite and take over the family farm in 1990 where they strive to keep the values of their ancestors. Since 2011, they also share this passion with their son who is now fully invested in this adventure. A promising wine story !/p>

     Terroir

    Terroir

The Côtes de Duras vineyard covers over 1500 hectares and produces 65% red and 35% white. Its subsoils, composed of molasses and heavy and sticky clays called Boulbènes, are very favorable to the blossoming of white grape varieties. Producing red wines is deeply embedded in the South-West’s culture and tradition, because their food pairs better with red and they want to compete with Bordeaux.

    Eperon d'Argent 2016, J. Lebègue, AOC Graves

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

This wine reminds of a fruit basket filled with fresh and crunchy fruits ! The nose displays various elegant flavours of pear, banana, apple and blackberry. On the palate, we may agree that the smooth start gives charm. This delicious “Graves” manages to combine the subtly flavoured treats of fruits and a gentle texture. The perfect dry white Bordeaux !

Cuvée l’Obra 2014, Domaine du Crampilh, Comté Tolosan

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

This Comté Tolosan is incredibly bright ! Plunge your nose in the glass and discover this delicate fragrance of acacia and honey. Can you feel it ? When the wine met my palate, the result matched my expectations : balanced, ample and concentrated, giving the wine a beautiful aromatic persistence on the finish. There are aromas of brioche and butter, and intermingled with notes of honey, I felt back in my lovely childhood days !

Domain of Crampilh : a hymn to love. In the 1800s, Sabin Oulie, the mayor of a small village, chose to plant a vineyard and gave his estate the name of his beloved Melanie Crampilh. Roussanne 2015, La Bastide Saint Dominique, IGP Méditerrannée

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

This roussanne is concentrated pleasure ! The light greenish gold robe let guess that the wine is explosive. And indeed, it is ! Its nose displays nice aromas of tree fruits (mainly apricot), and on the palate, we feel again these flavours of apricots along with almonds. It’s fruity and refreshing : a perfect wine for summer lunches ! You can obviously pair if with white fish, but it will also be amazing served with a fresh tomatoe tart for example.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Roussanne is a white variety only planted in southern regions, mainly in the Rhône Valley. It is notably part of the most famous “Crus” from the region, like white Hermitage or Châteauneuf-du-Pape. If nowadays, roussanne is pretty popular, it was not always the case. Do you feel like standing at the top of a hill facing strong southern winds ? Do not search anymore, take a ticket to Avignon and head to Bastide Saint Dominique. Created in 1976, under the impulsion of Gérard et Marie-Claude Bonnet, the estate’s headquarter is located in a former chapel from the 16th Century at the bottom of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s hills. It’s in this unique place that Eric, their son, elaborates all the family’s red and white wines./p>

     Terroir

    Terroir

The 60 hectares of La Bastide Saint Dominique are planted on a soil of red clay and round pebbles. These pebbles, typical of the southern Rhône Valley, give roussanne a lot of warmth, which is good as this lazy variety can produce too acid wines if it did not get enough heat. In this case, the grapes just got what they need to give a flattering wine with a right level of freshness.

    Touraine 2013, Vignoble Dinocheau

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

There is a lot of freshness in that wine. I really appreciated the mineral aromas that come straight from the flints that the soil of Touraine is made of. Its aromas of fresh citrus and white fruits should definitely please you. This wine is to be enjoyed with friends around a seafood platter.      Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

Seen from far away, the Dinocheau family could seem lazy. Indeed, their policy is to do the least they can on their vines. This results in a minimization of the use of herbicide to control soil erosion. «We produce wines that reflect the characteristics of our land”. Thus, thanks to the Dinocheau, it really is a piece of Touraine that you sip while drinking their delicious sauvignon!

     Terroir

    Terroir

The Dinocheau vineyard is located at the very heart of the Loire region, in the middle of all the Châteaux. Chambord, Chenonceau, Amboise… are certainly what attract so many tourists in the area, but they are not the only stars there. The flints on which the vines are planted are known to accumulate the heat of the sun during the day and to give it back to the grapes at night, ensuring that the sauvignon will reach a perfect maturity.

Trio Tempo 2016, Lionel Osmin & cie, IGP Comté Tolosan

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

I am a huge lover of Gros Manseng. This grape variety, mainly grown in the South-West, creates fruity wines, gathering both sweet and exotic aromas, with freshness that balances the wine and makes the third glass as enjoyable as the first one... It allows sweet and sour pairings which are very interesting, and I really like opening a bottle with friends with a good goat cheese served with honey or jam.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Gros Manseng is a typical Southwestern grape variety. It can be at the origin of sweet or dry wines. The opinion of the sommelier

Do you know Savennières? Well, I am pleased to introduce you to this appellation with one of its best ambassadors, Château La Franchaie. This very pleasant wine, with mineral and saltyflavours, also has very small oxidative aromasthat give a subtle taste of nuts and dried fruits.      Anecdote

    A wine, a family

Loïc Mahe produces a wine that reflects what nature has to offer in this region. Indeed, he doesn’t want to work too much on the vines so as to let it express the terroir. He does not use chemical fertilizers, lets the grass grows as it wants in the vines, and of course, harvests the grapes by hand. His vision is just to help nature expressing itself, not giving his personality to his wine.

     Terroir

    Terroir

Savennières is a small appellation that lies south of Angers on the right bank of the Loire. The Château itself is located near Possonnière in the hills of the appellation. The ground is made of schist. This laminated and fractured soil gives vine roots the opportunity to penetrate seven or eight feet deep, where rainwater naturally flows and where it can find the best nutriments. Moreover, this kind of soil keeps a lot of warmth from the sun, which protects the vines during winter.

    The opinion of the sommelier

This wine from Château les Donats is absolutely delicious and I am really proud to present it to you ! Very typical of the dry white wines from Bergerac, this batch displays nice aromas of citrus fruits and flowers wonderfully enhanced by a strong acidity that gives all this amazing liveliness to the wine. To pair it perfectly, I suggest you serve it with grilled white fish or oysters.

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

In 1994, Patrick Somers, heir of a family of Belgian wine merchants and passionate about winemaking, decided to produce his own wine. To do so, he visited a few vineyards, and felt in love with Château les Donats that he bought and entirely renovated. To keep on improving the quality of the wines, he was joined in 2011 by the oenologist Olivier Verhelst who implemented new cultivation techniques and updated the winemaking process./p>

Château les Donats’ vines cover 15 hectares on the sides a valley digged throughout the millenniums by the Dordogne River in the heart of Périgord. The plots have various exposures to the sun. Vigne du Prieuré, 2011, Château Gigognan, Côtes du Rhône

    Sommelier

The opinion of the wine taster

“Summer holidays are over… To keep in mind the summer exoticism, I suggest you this beautiful bottle of Gigognan that will be paired with a Creole menu concocted by Catherine Naud, a martiniquan chef. The nose of this wine is very expressive and reveals a complex aromatic bouquet with perfumes of fruits and flowers. The bitter aftertaste confers to the wine a nice fresh touch. I definitely don’t advise to aerate the bottle.”

    Feuille

     The winemaker

Annes and Jacques Callet became «winemaker by accident », as they like saying. They didn’t miss a chance to make the Château Gigognan shine and they reveal a strong passion for their vineyards. They are also kind hosts and they take special care of guests of their B&B, which mix the sophisticated Provençal style of XVIII century with the comfort of the modernity. The favourite of My VitiBox is: Sophie’s room!

    The terroir

The vineyard is located in the south of of the Rhone Valley. It’s the region most exposed to the force of natural elements, but it also benefits of 2800 hours of sunshine per year! However, the secret of these vineyards are in the soil composed of the so called “caïau frejaü” (rounded pebbles) with the ability to store heat by day and diffuse it during night.

Les Fumées Blanches - Réserve 2016, François Lurton, Côtes de Gascogne

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

When you open a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc, you expect to find all the freshness and the minerality that characterize this grape variety. But this wine is the exception that proves the rule. This cuvée seduced me with its thick creaminess that perfectly carries its minerality and its citrus aromas. I discovered a new facet of the South West sauvignon, quite untypical, but a real delight !

    Feuille

Mainly grown in the Loire Valley, in Bordeaux and in the South-West, sauvignon’s success story goes even beyond French borders and is now famous all around the world. However, depending on the region of production, the sauvignon displays quite different flavours : citrus fruits in the south-west, vegetal, mineral and exotic notes in New Zealand, or stony aromas in the Loire Valley !

François Lurton embodies the fifth generation of this great family of winegrowers that is the Lurton family and which is at the origin of this nice wine.      Located in the heart of Gascony, the vineyard is under the influence of oceanic climate. Thanks to the closeness of the Pyrenees mountains, the high temperature gap between day and night is ideal to preserve sauvignon blanc’s aromas. Alain's opinion

This white wine has a good quality/price ratio. It is a soft wine with a light typical viognier nose, mingling notes of white flowers, pear and almonds with a very pleasant finish. I particularly appreciate theroundness of this wine, not so common for wines from this price range. I advise you to taste it with friends, paired with a light meal.

Carpe Guilhem 2015, Domaine San de Guilhem, Côtes de Gascogne

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

Côtes de Gascogne is an amazing region mainly known for Armagnac. However, the area offers as well numerous great terroirs for white wines. The wine displays an intense and fresh bouquet, which is typical of Côtes de Gascogne, with aromas of citrus fruits and herbs. The mouthfeel is very fresh, long on the palate and has a nice salty touch. I suggest you serve it along with cod and melon.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

The large number of varieties used in the blend contributes to the wine’s complexity. Colombard, a typical variety of Gascogne, gives the fruity aromas. It is almost all the time blended with ugni blanc, which enriches the wine with floral flavours. Eventually, gros manseng, often used to elaborate sweet wines, gives the wine its light sweetness.

    A winemaker, a family

Many people in the Savennières area consider the Château d’Epiré an historical treasure. Indeed, it is the only vineyard that has remained in the same family, the Bizard family, since the 17th Century. Nowadays, it is Luc who manages the vineyard with the will of giving to his wines the mineral aromas typical from Savennières and to perpetuate the family traditions.

Savennières’reputation comes from its dry white wines, often called the « Grands Crus » of the Loire Valley. The terroir of Savennières is located in a microclimate that offers the benefits of not having too many thunderstorms. Thus, the grapes mature faster and better than around the appellation.

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

love the freshness of Loire Valley’s chenins. With a fresh goat cheese, it is absolutely delightful. And this chenin from Domaine the Prieuré just confirms that these wines can be amazing. Its nose displays nice aromas of flowers and granny. On the palate, the balance is amazing. The wine is indeed more characterized by its liveliness but it’s perfectly balanced thanks to its remarkable fruity aromas.

Chenin is a variety that comes from Anjou and has spread all along the Loire River. It has long been harvested too early hence giving acidic wines, which explains why people are still suspicious today. Domaine du Prieuré was taken over in 2012 by two oenologists, Dominique Sirot and Alexis Soulas, who felt in love with the Layon River. They left Corsica, where they used to work in large wine estates for several years, in order to settle in Anjou with their families.
