  1. Domaine de la Garenne 2016, Bandol

Domaine de la Garenne 2016, Bandol

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

Bandol is a unique appellation. It is the only one in Provence that is entirely very close to the sea, and it is the only one to use Mourvedre, a very interesting variety, as its main grape. It gives deep, powerful, spicy wines that get better with time. Domaine de la Garenne shows what a typical, seriously elaborated Bandol is supposed to be.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Mourvedre is the emblematic variety of Bandol. It gives very small berries with a very think skin which explains why there is such an impressive tannic structure, as tannins in red wines come from grapes’ skin. It is blended with Grenache to give a creamier structure, to Carignan for sweet aromas and to Cinsault to give more body and peppery flavours.

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

Domaine de la Garenne is Balincourt Family’s property since 1886. It’s located only 5 kms away from the Sea. The Family was knighted 1556 wich explain why you’ll see a blazon on the label. Nowadays, Béatrix de Balincourt in in charge. /p>

     Terroir

    Terroir

Only on southern slopes, vines in Bandol are permanently exposed to sunlight. At the bottom of the hills, the Mediterranean Sea is a great temperature moderator. The soil is very poor in nutrients and water, which stimulates the vine stocks to grow deep roots and therefore not to focus too much on grapes. Thanks to that, winegrowers can harvest small but powerful grape berries that give great wines.

  2. Edelzwicker, Cave de Hunawihr, Alsace

    Edelzwicker, Cave de Hunawihr, Alsace

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

Edelzwicker is a typical wine from Alsace in eastern France. This wine is unique as it is the only kind of wine from Alsace that blends several grape varieties. The grapes selected so as to elaborate those wines are not the richest ones, but the fact that several varieties are blended gives complexity often carried out by the freshness of young vines, which gives a particularly refreshing and balanced wine.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Edelzwicker is a noble blend. Indeed, « wicker » means blend in old Alsace’s patois, and “edel” means noble. This particular batch is made of pinot blanc, sylvaner and chasselas. The two first ones bring acidity and aromas of flower, peach, apple and citrus. Chasselas gives more specific aromas of mint and may tree.

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

After World War II, wine merchants in Alsace (which was briefly part of Germany during the war) ware disorganised. Therefore, winemakers in Hunawhir were not able to sell their wine so they took action and created their own “coopérative” (an association of winemakers) to deal with this problem. Nowadays, Cave d’Hunawhir is ranked best “coopérative” in Alsace by Revue des Vins de France, the main wine magazine in France./p>

     Terroir

    Terroir

Vosges Mountains protect Alsace’s vineyards from strong winds as its continental climate (very cold during the winter, very hot during summer, but with cold nights) stimulates very efficiently vine stocks. It ensure a slow but regular ripening of grapes which is particularly appreciable for white grapes often less resistant than red grapes. That’s why 90% of the wine made in Alsace is white.

  3. Château Lieujean 2012, Haut-Médoc Cru Bourgeois

Château Lieujean 2012, Haut-Médoc Cru Bourgeois

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

This month, we chose Chateau Lieujean, one of the best Cru Bourgeois in Médoc. It is deeply concentrated, with intense flavours of black berries, delicate woody aromas. Tannins are very present yet quite silky, and the length is long and juicy. A very complete and tasty Bordeaux.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

In Medoc, all wines are blends. And the two main varieties by far are Merlot and Cabernet-Sauvignon, the second one being almost all the time dominant. This blend gives intense wines with a good ageing potential, marked by aromas of black and red berries, and often completed by elegant flavours of leather or mushrooms if the wine already is a few years old.

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

Lieujean Family is acknowledged in Bordeaux as early as 1868. The Estate was already known back then to give wines with a strong personality. Since 2011, Chateau is ranked vintage after vintage in the Cru Bourgeois ranking that distinguished all the great wines in Bordeaux that were not ranked Grand Cru Classé in 1855. /p>

     Terroir

    Terroir

Located in Saint-Sauveur, next to Pauillac, Lieujean is close to the Garonne River, which plays the role of a temperature regulator. The soil is made of graves, medium round pebbles typical from Bordeaux that keep the warmth of the sun during the day to give it back to grapes at night. That’s why the wine is so concentrated.
