Berry Good 2015, Domaine Nairaud Suberville, Châteaumeillant

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

This month, I have the pleasure to share with you one of my recently found jewel, which comes from one of the smallest appellation that gathers only 10 winemakers : Châteaumeillant. The wines from this terroir are appreciated for their gourmet nose of cherry, plum and pepper. On the palate, the aromas are fresh and reveals a very beautiful structure with crisp that I enjoy deeply.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Berry Good is mainly composed of gamay. Originally from Burgundy, it is the first grape variety of the Chateaumeillant appel-lation. It brings freshness and finesse to the cuvée with aromas of red fruits and spices (pepper). Blended with pinot noir, the wine shows a greater finesse and have a nice balance.

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

The story of the Nairaud Suberville vineyard began in 2011, one year after Châteaumeillant officially became an appellation. This was an amazing year for Daniel Nairaud. Former deputy director of the National Institute of Appellations of Origin (INAO), he left at 49 years his job to start an adventure and become a winemaker. His years at INAO gave him all the theoretical foundations of wine production, and today he makes his own wine for our greatest pleasure ! /p>

     Terroir

    Terroir

The vines of Nairaud Suberville are grown on a sandy-clay soil. This terroir is typical of the appellation and it is also ideal for the gamay variety. Granitic and not very deep, the soil brings a good drainage to the vine and produces a wine with structure and body.

  2. Château Croix de Fillol, 2014, AOC Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux

Château Croix de Fillol, 2014, AOC Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

This appellation, stuck between Saint-Emilion and the southwest is a terroir I am fond of because wines there offer the same subtle minerality as in the Libournais’ appellations. I have made astonishing finds there. This château is one of those : very pleasant in the mouth, fruity and perfectly well aged.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Cabernet Franc is not the main grape variety of Bordeaux’s region. Thanksto its ability to ripen prematurely, it is also located in the North as far as the Loire Valley and brings to Bordeaux’s wines, complexity and a spicy touch.

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

Born into a family of twelve children, Francis Pallaro is the 10th and also the more passionate about viticulture among all the siblings. That’s why he decided to take over from his parents, a couple of Italian and Polish immigrants, who purchased the family vineyard in 1948. Francis can also count on his wife who help him, daily, to create superb wines./p>

  3. Domaine Haut-Loubier 2017, Saint Chinian

    Domaine Haut-Loubier 2017, Saint Chinian

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

This wine is a pure gem. It’s a tribute to the noble terroir of Saint-Chinian. Located in the South of France, Domaine Haut-Loubier’s vines are located on slopes which give fresh wines with complex aromas. In the mouth you can experience hint of ripe fruits, spices and pepper with firm tannins for our pleasure.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

This wine gathers three different grapes which develop the whole structure and complexity of this cuvee. As it usually does, Grenache gives aromas of red fruits and firm tannins. Syrah provide smoky notes of spices and hints of ripe fruits. The last grape, Mourvèdre, is known for its peppery flavours.

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

In the early 19th century, Domaine Haut-Loubier already owned 20 hectares divided between vineyards and olive trees. Located on hills, this winery uses parcels with different sun exposure in order to pair the lands and the grapes. We can taste this beautiful wine thanks to Jean-Marc Loubier, winemaker and owner of this winery./p>

     Terroir

    Terroir

The terroir of Saint-Chinian is divided in two parts. In one of them the soil is composed of schists which produce fruity wines with a low level of acidity. Domaine Haut-Loubier is located on the second kind of soil made of clay and limestone. This type of soil offers freshness to the wines and the limestone gives firm tannins that allows the wine to age longer.

Les Rocailles 2015, Domaine Pierre Finon, Saint-Joseph

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

Les Rocailles, by the very talented winemaker Pierre Finon, does honour the great appellation of Saint-Joseph. A powerful wine that expresses delicious aromas of blueberry and black pepper, and refreshed by notes of violet specific to syrah. On the palate, a beautiful finish with tannins that shows us a strong wine with a great ageing potential.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Syrah is the emblematic black grape of the northern part of the Rhone Valley and the only black grape of the Saint-Joseph appellation. 5. Dame de Cœur 2015, Domaine Louis Chomel, Saint-Joseph

Dame de Cœur 2015, Domaine Louis Chomel, Saint-Joseph

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

Unbelievable Saint-Joseph! The winemaker offers an exceptional tasting with this powerful and elegant cuvee as the appellation knows how to create it. However, Dame de Coeur is also really smooth is the mouth. Expressive and subtle at the same time, this wine is perfect for long winter dinners.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Dame de Cœur is made of Syrah, the only black grape of Saint-Joseph appellation. This cuvee is made of a selection of grapes coming from the oldest vines of the domain. The roots of these vines go deeper in the soil and so the wines produce are more intense and more expressive than young vines. Using old vines guarantee to produce wine that are more representative of a terroir.

  6. Château Belle Grange 2015, Saint-Emillion Grand Cru

Château Belle Grange 2015, Saint-Emillion Grand Cru

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

This 2015 vintage of Château Belle Grange really impressed me. It’s very elegant, has a lot of structure and is very full bodied without being heavy, and it has a very long finish. But what distinguishes it from other Saint-Emilion is its unique flavours of flowers that will charm you.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

In Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux is predominant almost all the time. Merlot enjoys soils of clay which keep its grape fresh (otherwise, this variety tends to make too much alcohol). On the other side, cabernet sauvignon enjoys pebbles as it keeps warmth which is useful for this variety which finds it harder to ripen.

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

Verhaeghe Family has a 200 years old history of making wine in Bordeaux. They own estates in Saint-Emilion and in Bordeaux Supérieur appellations. Around half of the vineyard is already certified organic : the other half will soon be and the future vintages starting from 2017 will be certified organic. /p>

     Terroir

    Terroir

Château Belle Grange’s terroir is interesting as it covers the two sides of a hill. One side is made of clay, which is the case in most of the appellation; the other side is made of pebbles, which is more common in Médoc on the other side of Bordeaux. Both combined allow to make great merlot as well as great cabernet-sauvignon which give this great wine once blended.

  7. Maison Andrien Vacher, la Sasson 2016, Vin de Savoie pinot noir

Maison Andrien Vacher, la Sasson 2016, Vin de Savoie pinot noir

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

Pinot noir can blossom outside of Burgundy : there is the proof with this wine from Savoie. The freshness and the altitude of Savoy are great to pinot noir and as a great lover of Savoyard wines, it is for me a great pleasure to make you discover this original wine. The mouth is full of freshness and the tannins are very subtle.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Pinot Noir is a subtle grape that fully blossoms on the clay and limestone soils of the Savoyard vineyards. In contrast to wines of the South, Pinot Noir has a low concentration of sugars and alcohol. It gives intense wines but which remain digestible with a very good tannic structure, supple and soft.

Tradition 2014, Domaine de L’Olivette, Bandol

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

This month, I am happy to make you taste a wine from Bandol, one of my favourite appellation. Jean Luc Dumoutier elaborates a unique cuvee with an extraordinary aromatic palette. A powerful wine that shows aromas of Morello cherry, prune, tobacco and leather. The finish is spicy with a hint of thyme. In the mouth, all the flavours are structured by firm tannins.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

This cuvee is mainly elaborated with Mourvedre. This variety has small grape with a dense skin which gives to the wine a great tannic structure with a long ageing potential. This grape provides all the personality and uniqueness of Bandol wines. Gather with Grenache, Carignan and Cinsault, the structur is more complex with a wider aromatic range.

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

Domaine de l’Olivette has been owned by the same family for more than 200 years. At the beginning it was just a farm where polyculture was made : wheat, vines, vegetables and obviously olive trees, which gave their name to the estate. In 1930, the family decided to focus on winemaking, and especially from 1941 when the Bandol Appellation was created. They therefore were among the first estates to produce Bandol wines. Nowadays Jean-Luc and Elisabeth Dumoutier are the fourth generation of winemakers./p>

     Terroir

    Terroir

Facing south, the vineyards receive around 3000 hours of sunlight a year. The Mediterranean Sea protects the vineyard from too big gaps of temperature. Whereas in the height, hills are blocking the cold wind coming from the North. The soil is composed of clay and limestone with marl. Despite of a poor ground with limited yield, this soil is really favourable to the growing of vine and produces grapes with concentrated aromas.

Les Charmes de Liversan 2015, Château de Liversan, Haut Médoc

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

Second wines from Bordeaux renowned Chateaux are often an opportunity to feel the same king of sensation but for a far more affordable price ! However, the vines and therefore the grapes take advantage from the same skills and the terroir are often quite similar, which allow sometimes the second wine to be more looked for than the chateaux. Liversan is a good example of that : its second wine really is not so different from the Chateau itself.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Cabernet sauvignon is known to be the main variety of all the grand crus Classé in Médoc. It’s a variety that need heat as it ripen relatively slowly, especially in a rainy region like Bordeaux. But this variety has a great advantage : it gives an outstanding tannic structureto wines which allow the best ones to age for decades.

Domaine de la Garenne 2016, Bandol

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

Bandol is a unique appellation. It is the only one in Provence that is entirely very close to the sea, and it is the only one to use Mourvedre, a very interesting variety, as its main grape. It gives deep, powerful, spicy wines that get better with time. Domaine de la Garenne shows what a typical, seriously elaborated Bandol is supposed to be.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Mourvedre is the emblematic variety of Bandol. It gives very small berries with a very think skin which explains why there is such an impressive tannic structure, as tannins in red wines come from grapes’ skin. It is blended with Grenache to give a creamier structure, to Carignan for sweet aromas and to Cinsault to give more body and peppery flavours.

    Terroir

Only on southern slopes, vines in Bandol are permanently exposed to sunlight. At the bottom of the hills, the Mediterranean Sea is a great temperature moderator. The soil is very poor in nutrients and water, which stimulates the vine stocks to grow deep roots and therefore not to focus too much on grapes. Thanks to that, winegrowers can harvest small but powerful grape berries that give great wines.

    Les Saint-Jacques 2016, Domaine de l'Ecette, Rully

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

This cuvee from Domaine de l’Ecette shows how much Rully is a terroir that gives refined and elegant wines. Pinot noir, known to be among the most elegant varieties is here at its best. It displays its intense fruity flavours (mainly cherry) with mushrooms and spicy aromas that bring complexity. The main aftertaste is remarkably long and enjoyable.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Pinot Noir prefers to grow away from the sea as it does not like humidity. Indeed, it is very fragile and falls ill easily. A terroir of limestone, and very filtering stone, are a great addition to protect vine stocks from too much water. It is this magic combination that allowed Burgundy to become and by far the best place in the world to grow Pinot Noir.

    The opinion of the sommelier

Known worldwide for the quality of its pinotage, Domaine l’Avenir is one of the best estates in South Africa. Domaine l’Avenir was created by Mar Wiehe in 1992. It quickly rose to icon status thanks to the quality of its Pinotage. 13. Clémence 2016, Domaine Philippe et Vincent Jaboulet, Crozes-Hermitage

Clémence 2016, Domaine Philippe et Vincent Jaboulet, Crozes-Hermitage

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

As it is a world class winery, Jaboulet is one of the most famous names in the Rhône Valley. However, Philippe and Vincent made the choice to get out of the Family winery so as to grow smaller parcels and make exactly the wine they love. And they did well as Clémence is one of my favourite wine and each vintage is in my personal cellar.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Only black variety in the northern Rhône Valley, syrah gives there its finest expression with a lot of power, spicy aromas and firm yet elegant tannins. This tannic structure allows to keep the wine a few years for ageing: it will be a little less powerful but a little more complex as it will have developed aromas of leather or mushrooms.

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

Founded in 1834, Jaboulet is one of the most famous wineries in the area (and in France as it is quite big). After 30 years being in charge of the hundreds of hectares of vineyard of the family, Philippe wanted to think smaller to make better. That’s why he founded with his son Vincent his own Domaine. /p>

     Terroir

    Terroir

Crozes-Hermitage faces Saint-Joseph just on the other side of the river. Both have syrah in common, but they produces quite different expressions of this variety. Jaboulet’s vines are located in the south of the appellation on a light soil that lets the roots growing very deep into the ground. Therefore, vine stocks capture a lot of different nutrient that end in the berries which gives its high level of complexity to the wine.

Les Secrets de la Licorne 2017, Domaine de Brunely, Vacqueyras

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

Located on the astonishing Dentelles de Montmirail, Vacqueyras is not the most famous appellation in the Southern Rhone valley but it is known in the region as the appellation that defines the style of what should à Southern Rhone wine taste like. Secrets de la Licorne complies with that rule with its strong tannins, its full body and its long finish.

Château Lieujean 2012, Haut-Médoc Cru Bourgeois

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

This month, we chose Chateau Lieujean, one of the best Cru Bourgeois in Médoc. It is deeply concentrated, with intense flavours of black berries, delicate woody aromas. Tannins are very present yet quite silky, and the length is long and juicy. A very complete and tasty Bordeaux.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

In Medoc, all wines are blends. And the two main varieties by far are Merlot and Cabernet-Sauvignon, the second one being almost all the time dominant. This blend gives intense wines with a good ageing potential, marked by aromas of black and red berries, and often completed by elegant flavours of leather or mushrooms if the wine already is a few years old.

    A winemaker, a family

Lieujean Family is acknowledged in Bordeaux as early as 1868. The Estate was already known back then to give wines with a strong personality. Since 2011, Chateau is ranked vintage after vintage in the Cru Bourgeois ranking that distinguished all the great wines in Bordeaux that were not ranked Grand Cru Classé in 1855. /p>

     Terroir

    Terroir

Located in Saint-Sauveur, next to Pauillac, Lieujean is close to the Garonne River, which plays the role of a temperature regulator. The soil is made of graves, medium round pebbles typical from Bordeaux that keep the warmth of the sun during the day to give it back to grapes at night. That’s why the wine is so concentrated.

  16. Domaine de Brunely 2018, Ventoux

    Domaine de Brunely 2018, Ventoux

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

It’s hard to imagine by seeing the high and windy Mont Ventoux (Windy Mountain in Provencal) that there are vineyards on its slopes. However, it is the case and the vines there give particularly interesting wines there. Brunely is typical of this appellation with deep peppery and cherry flavours that give an intense and complex wine.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

We find an equal proportion of Syrah and Grenache. The first one is the typical grape variety from Northern Rhone Valley and brings freshness and tastes of spices and flowers. The second one is the great variety of Southern Rhone valley and gives the creamy texture and the ripe fruits aromas. Carignan brings some structure and complexity to the whole with flavours of black berries.

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

From the 1990’s, Charles Carichon took after his father and never ceased modernising the Family vineyard. Moreover, he bought a lot of new vines in all the neighbouring appellations. 17. Château de Chambert 2012, Rigal, Cahors

Château de Chambert 2012, Rigal, Cahors

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

Château de Chambert is one of those famous estates that has a strong positive impact on the reputation of their appellation. One of the reasons why it’s famous is because the soil never got a drop of chemical. It has been given up for a few decades and then immediately grown in biodynamics. The 2012 vintage has improved with age : the wine is powerful and velvety in the mouth with a very beautiful dense and fleshy structure.

    Feuille

Château Chapelle Labory 2015, Cuvée Parcellaire, Fronsac

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

At the nose, remarkable flavours of black and red berries. At the palate, you’ll be charmed by the wine’s density and its elegance. Tannins are silky, with a chocolate taste which is a signature taste of amazing warm vintages. Wines of the vintage 2015 have a very noticeable ageing potential in Bordeaux. This Fronsac can be appreciated right now or in the next two or three years.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

The soil of Fronsac exalts Cabernet Franc, a grape variety that appreciates soils of clay and limestone! It is no coincidence if it is often grown in Libournais, the part of Bordeaux where Fronsac is. A subtle blend that celarly shows that even added in small quantity, some grapes can change a lot the wine.

Nessun Dorma 2014, Domaine Maby, Lirac

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

Richard Maby is a talented winemaker renowned for his white and red wines from Lirac and his rosés of Tavel. I really like his author's wines and Nessun Dorma is a real jewel! Its deep garnet robe reveals a powerful nose from which emanate delicious ripe cherries, enhanced by a woody and an animal leathery touch ... An intense experience !

Malbec, the most famous grape variety of the region, blooms on the gravelly and sandy soils of the Southwest. It as well likes large temperature gaps between day and night, a phenomenon that it also found in the Andes in Argentina where it became the main black grape variety. La relève 2015, Jeanne Gaillard, Saint Joseph

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

Pierre Gaillard is one on the few Rhône Valley’s star winemakers. As Pierre ages, he is slowly putting his daughter Jeanne in charge of his best plots of vines.
