    The opinion of the sommelier

    This little vineyard in Médoc is a nice discovery. The attack is very pleasant and the aromatic profile of this wine is complex, mainly based on strawberry and blackcurrant aromas perfectly enhanced by a marked acidity. This wine is at the beginning of its peak, but if you enjoy tertiary aromas, it will easily wait for you a few years in your cellar.

    Merlot and cabernet sauvignon is the most widespread blend in Bordeaux. Cabernet franc, without being rare, is less common. It’s the main variety in Chinon in the Loire Valley and it is often used in Bordeaux to complete the blends with its fresh red berries aromas.

    Château Bellegrave du Poujeau is a typical example of what is called a gardener’s wine. With only 4 hectares, Jean-Pierre Cantelaube can give a lot of attention to each of his vine stocks. For example, they are all pruned individually which allow to reach the highest level of ripeness possible each time, so there are no more bad vintages!

     The vines are planted on a particularly thick ground of Graves. These big and hard round pebbles do not retain water and nutrients on the contrary to the layer of clay these lie on. Therefore, vines’ roots have to struggle through the pebbles to get their water and nutrients in the clay. It is a good thing as it forces the vine to be stronger so as to reveal the whole potential of the grapes!

    This Côtes-du-Rhône’s purple flashy colour suggests that the wine will be fresh and lively. On the palate, the wine is indeed lively and comes along with soft melted tannins that enhance the explosive aromas of flowers and red berries. Just after swallowing, pay attention to the remarkable length of that wine and take the time to appreciate the nice spicy aftertaste. If you enjoy refined wines, this bottle is for you !

    Grenache and syrah are the two main varieties in the Côtes-du-Rhône appellation. However, grenache comes from Aragon, in Spain. It is one of the most cultivated grape varieties in the world and it spreads thanks to the intense aromas of ripened black and red berries it gives to the wines. Syrah brings to the wine fresh and spicy aromas hence ensuring the right level of complexity and a perfect balance.

    In the Bastide Family, the wine is a matter of passion and tradition. The family has been in charge for 4 generations, and it’s not about to stop. Nowadays, Eric Bastide and his son Robin carry on the tradition of excellence of the family. Robin even started bringing his own touch by starting a project of modernization of the winery./p>

     Domaine de l’Olivier is made of 48 hectares of old vines planted on hillsides. The old vines especially enjoy these slopes and their southern exposure. Moreover, the soil is made of clay which gives more complexity to the wine. However, old vines exposed south could give wines that lack of freshness, which is not the case thanks to the strong wind that constantly blows on the grapes.

    This wine is an ode to what should be a northern Rhône Valley syrah. Indeed, Philippe and Vincent Jaboulet managed to express in their wine very distinct aromas of liquorice, red berries (raspberry mostly) and pepper. This nice Crozes-Hermitage, very typical from its renowned appellation, will pair perfectly with a delicate meat like veal or stronger flavours, like beef or matured cheeses.

    Even if syrah is not from Syria or from Syracuse as it was long believed, it is still an international grape variety with 140 000 hectares planted all over the world. Argentina, South Africa, Australia, California, Chile, Mexico… But it’s nowhere as refined as in Rhône Valley where it historically is the only black grape variety.

    Jaboulet winery was founded in 1834 and has thriven ever since under the reign of the Jaboulet family. However, after 30 years working for the family winery, Philippe decided to let the new generation take over and to get his own estate. That’s why he partnered with his son to start a new page of the family’s history, with talent as Cuvée Clémence tends to prove !/p>

     The estate is located in the southern part of the appellation which particularity is to have relatively flat vines. The consequence is that the ground is dryer as rainwater flows straight to the depth of the underground. Moreover, this plateau is quite high therefore pretty windy. It gives red wines incredibly dry with really expressive aromas.

    Dear subscribers, why don’t you close your eyes for a moment. You’re lying down in fresh grass next to a tree, in front of the Mont Ventoux in southern France, just where Provence begins. Your nose gets fresh aromas of citrus fruits led by a delicate note of lemon. In the mouth, the silky texture is an enchantment. A nice minerality tickles your tongue, and gives a nice mouthfeel and length on the palate.

    Roussane, one of the greatest variety used for southern white wine, is mainly used in the Rhône valley and in Provence. It’s not that usual to find it blended with vermentino, another southern white variety, but they fit perfectly together. Vermentinon gives thisk wines with a creamy texture and fruity aromas, roussane brings vegetal flavours, minerality and freshness. The whole results in a very balanced and elegant wine.

    What makes Ventoux unique is the fact it is the only appellation in the area to be more famous for its white wines than for its reds. Leonard Rozen, who bought the wine estate in 2011, very understood this specificity and decided to bet on White wines ; hence, he lead his team to replace parcels previously planted with black varieties by white ones. However, Rozen not only planted new vines, but also grew one of the most famous garden in the region; therefore, your wine was elaborated in perfect weather conditions in a breathtaking scenery !/p>

     Luberon’s vines have been flourishing in the softness of Mediterranean climate since the Roman Empire. Planted high, in the heart of Verdon natural reserve, vines take advantage of long sunny days and fresh nights which give the wine its refinement and natural elegance. The soil is made from limestone and clay, which gives the wine an acidulous flavour which adds some freshness, quite appreciated in this southern region !

    Edelzwicker is a typical wine from Alsace in eastern France. This wine is unique as it is the only kind of wine from Alsace that blends several grape varieties. The grapes selected so as to elaborate those wines are not the richest ones, but the fact that several varieties are blended gives complexity often carried out by the freshness of young vines, which gives a particularly refreshing and balanced wine.

    Edelzwicker is a noble blend. Indeed, « wicker » means blend in old Alsace’s patois, and “edel” means noble. This particular batch is made of pinot blanc, sylvaner and chasselas. The two first ones bring acidity and aromas of flower, peach, apple and citrus. Chasselas gives more specific aromas of mint and may tree.

    After World War II, wine merchants in Alsace (which was briefly part of Germany during the war) ware disorganised. Therefore, winemakers in Hunawhir were not able to sell their wine so they took action and created their own “coopérative” (an association of winemakers) to deal with this problem. Nowadays, Cave d’Hunawhir is ranked best “coopérative” in Alsace by Revue des Vins de France, the main wine magazine in France./p>

     Vosges Mountains protect Alsace’s vineyards from strong winds as its continental climate (very cold during the winter, very hot during summer, but with cold nights) stimulates very efficiently vine stocks. It ensure a slow but regular ripening of grapes which is particularly appreciable for white grapes often less resistant than red grapes. That’s why 90% of the wine made in Alsace is white.

    The Egregore is one of the exceptional wines of the Bernard Magrez, the French wine magnate. I suggest you the vintage 2010 for his generous matter and his very long keeping potential. This cuvée Egregore is considered as a step to perfection…

    58% of the surface of this vineyard is covered my merlot. In contrast to the Boredeaux tradition of blended wines, this wine is vinified with only one variety, fact very rare for this region. Merlot gives a nice suppleness and a tannic structure to wine, along with a superb aromatic set.

     A lovely colour with garnet reflections

    The merlot provides a nice complexity of aromas. With ageing, aromas turn to touches of prune, understory and spices. These flavours are due to the maturation in French oak barrels.

     The winemaker

    Known for his exceptional wine, Bernard Magrez is a self-made winemaker. He became the first owner of the grand wines classified at Bordeaux. We call him “ the men of 40 wineries”!

    The vineyard grows in the lieu-dit of Guerit, close to the village of Tauriac. The grape of the Egregore come from the slopes exposed to the plain sun of the Chateau Guerry. The soil is composed of clay and sand. The Château Guerry is the oldest wine of Bordeaux and it exists since three century.

    Gamay is a red grape variety with white juice and very productive. In wintertime, winemakers cut the branches holding grapes very short. Each hectare has a big density of vine trunks and roots. These two characteristics of gamay facilitate the production of red, fruity, fresh and savoury wines.

    Winemaker

    The Marionnet family arrived at Soings, in the east part of Touraine, 30 km to the south of Blois, during the 50s’. What’s the peculiarity of this winery? The Marionnets own the oldest grapevine of France, dated around 1850, before the phylloxéra crisis.

    Thanks to its location in the east end of the Touraine, this winery benefits from a continental climate, favourable to sauvignon and gamay. Spring frosts are quite rare and temperatures help these two grape varieties to come to maturity before the harvest. Grapevines grow on “perruches” (flinty clay and gravels) soil. It is a dense and compact soil that produces wine for laying down.

    « I have worked with the Dominique Laurent domain for several years when I was Head Sommelier. I think that he is one of the best winemaker in Burgundy. In this cuvee, we can find the sturdy character as well as the simplicity of the winemaker. The oak casks used to produce this cuvee come from the Tronçais forest: you can feel these woody aromas in the wine. This cuvee has a nose full of blackcurrant and wild strawberry aromas. »

    Well-known for many years in Burgundy, pinot noir corresponds to 34% of the total of the vineyard in this region. Pinot noir distinguishes itself by its aromas of black cherries, with prune hints when the wine is getting old. This is a grape variety that is elegant, fine and subtle.

    Former pastry chef in Vesoul, nowadays Dominique Laurent is an icon in the wine’s industry in Burgundy. He was quoted several times by the famous critic Robert Parker. He knows how to produce good wines with a nice simplicity.

    I am quite happy I found this delicious Côtes de Blaye. The mouth is smooth and harmonious. It is like having a ballet dancer wearing a silk dress in your mouth. The finish, which is the taste that stays on the palate after the wine has been swallowed, is long and spicy.

    The blend merlot - cabernet sauvignon is emblematic of Bordeaux. Indeed, most of the wines from Bordeaux are made from these two varieties, sometimes adding a third one in very small quantity. Merlot develops fine red berries aromas and gives softness to the wine. Cabernet sauvignon brings acidity and strong tannins. It is also mostly thanks to cabernet sauvignon that this wonderful wine has some aging potential.

    The Gregory family is well known around the vineyards of Bordeaux. Their ancestors started making money by selling harvesting machines. But working with so many winemakers made them feel like making their own wine and this is how they bought several estates in Bordeaux, including Chateau Puynard and the famous Château La Rivière.

     The vineyard of Château Puynard covers 17 hectares. The vines are planted on hillsides along the Gironde river, in the Côtes de Blaye area. The close underground is a mix of clay and sand. When you go deeper, the underground has several limestone layers. This makes a really good terroir to grow highly concentrated grapes of merlot.

The wine displays aromas of cherry and wood, especially cedar. If you wish, you can keep it in your cellar so its aromas and texture evolve: it can ages up to seven years!

    The merlot is fruity and low in tannins. The cabernet sauvignon is strong in tannins and displays mainly vegetal aromas. The two were made to complete each other. And that is what Bordeaux is all about since the blend merlot and cabernet sauvignon is the most typical one there. But I would like to draw your attention to the petit verdot. It has always been present in Bordeaux, and since it is not sensitive to rot, it is more and more grown as the winemakers try to cut on pesticides.

    Located in Cadaujac just outside of Bordeaux, the Château d’Eck is a real medieval castle where one of the best wines of Pessac-Léognan is made. The castle was the first property of the Duke of Aquitaine and then it belonged to the King of England when the region was under English domination. François Eck inherited the castle and the estate in 1824 and gave it his own name!

     The Pessac-Léognan appel-lation was created 30 years ago to distinguish the best part of the Graves appellation. Graves is a big appellation that got its name from the stones that lie on the ground (Graves means pebble in old French) and helps the grapes to mature by accumulating the heat during the day and redistributing it during the night.

To pair it perfectly, I suggest you serve it with grilled white fish or oysters.

    In 1994, Patrick Somers, heir of a family of Belgian wine merchants and passionate about winemaking, decided to produce his own wine. To do so, he visited a few vineyards, and felt in love with Château les Donats that he bought and entirely renovated. To keep on improving the quality of the wines, he was joined in 2011 by the oenologist Olivier Verhelst who implemented new cultivation techniques and updated the winemaking process./p>

     Château les Donats’ vines cover 15 hectares on the sides a valley digged throughout the millenniums by the Dordogne River in the heart of Périgord. The plots have various exposures to the sun. This diversity allows choosing just the right exposure for each of the six grapes varieties that are grown in the vineyard.

    This Brouilly impressed me with its refinement and power. The uncommon nose starts the party with nice aromas of fruits and peonies. On the palate, you will feel again this deep intensity along with minerality, this salty like impression that characterizes the best Brouilly, the most famous of the ten “Cru” of the Beaujolais region.

    1395 is the year everything changed for gamay. Indeed, it is the year Philipe Le Hardi, Duke of Burgundy, decided that only pinot noir could be cultivated in Burgundy, and that gamay had to be grown in Beaujolais, at the south border of his duchy. Nowadays, gamay is still the only black variety grown in Beaujolais, but it spread a little and you can also taste nice wines from gamay in the Loire Valley and in Switzerland.

    In the Beaujolais region, wine estates usually cover dozens of hectares. Julien Duport, Régis Luttenauer and Denis Vedrinne made a different choice and bought only 3 hectares. But not any hectares ! Indeed, their vines are located on the best terroir of Brouilly and have one particularity : they are more than 100 years old on average ! The three friends care a lot about their vines which repay them with amazing grapes allowing them to elaborate exclusive batches of great Brouilly./p>

     Domaine des Cadoles’ three hectares are planted on a granitic soil. The main characteristic of granitic soils is that it has strong filtering properties and therefore let the water gets deep taking on the way nutrients away from the roots. So it submits the vines to a high level of water stress. It’s a good thing for gamay as its lazy variety has to be challenged to reveal its full potential.

    When you open a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc, you expect to find all the freshness and the minerality that characterize this grape variety. But this wine is the exception that proves the rule. This cuvée seduced me with its thick creaminess that perfectly carries its minerality and its citrus aromas. I discovered a new facet of the South West sauvignon, quite untypical, but a real delight !

     The terroir of Saint-Chinian is divided in two parts. In one of them the soil is composed of schists which produce fruity wines with a low level of acidity.     After having worked many years in winemaking cooperative, Julien Savanier and his wife bought the Chastelle winery in 2010. They wanted to “make the wine that we love”. Therefore, 2011 is their first harvest as owners of the vineyard. We have to say that for being their first, they have impressed us. This winery is a rising star!

     The Chastelle winery is located on the left bound of the Rhone river. Vineyards are 50 to 80 years old. The age of vineyards is usually a sign of quality: old vines produce less grapes but they are better exposed to sunlight and fruits are more concentred. The terroir is made of a great variety of soils, sometimes sandy, clayed-limestone and pebbly.

    This white wine has a good quality/price ratio. It is a soft wine with a light typical viognier nose, mingling notes of white flowers, pear and almonds with a very pleasant finish. I particularly appreciate theroundness of this wine, not so common for wines from this price range. I advise you to taste it with friends, paired with a light meal.

Originally from northern Rhone, itsuffered a lot from both phylloxera and the First World War: in 1965,there were only 8 small hectares of viognier remaining...!     The team currently managing the winery has opted for organic methods that result in a good soil conservation and a limited use of pesticides. Only 4 to 6 treatments of the vines per year are necessary, while the average in the French vineyards is 16 per year !

     Located in the north of Béziers, the vineyard of 60 hectares of Pierre-Belle grows on clay-limestone slopes exposed to the Mediterranean sun.
