Berry Good 2015, Domaine Nairaud Suberville, Châteaumeillant

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

This month, I have the pleasure to share with you one of my recently found jewel, which comes from one of the smallest appellation that gathers only 10 winemakers : Châteaumeillant. The wines from this terroir are appreciated for their gourmet nose of cherry, plum and pepper. On the palate, the aromas are fresh and reveals a very beautiful structure with crisp that I enjoy deeply.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Berry Good is mainly composed of gamay. Originally from Burgundy, it is the first grape variety of the Chateaumeillant appel-lation. It brings freshness and finesse to the cuvée with aromas of red fruits and spices (pepper). Blended with pinot noir, the wine shows a greater finesse and have a nice balance.

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

The story of the Nairaud Suberville vineyard began in 2011, one year after Châteaumeillant officially became an appellation. This was an amazing year for Daniel Nairaud. Former deputy director of the National Institute of Appellations of Origin (INAO), he left at 49 years his job to start an adventure and become a winemaker. His years at INAO gave him all the theoretical foundations of wine production, and today he makes his own wine for our greatest pleasure ! /p>

     Terroir

    Terroir

The vines of Nairaud Suberville are grown on a sandy-clay soil. This terroir is typical of the appellation and it is also ideal for the gamay variety. Granitic and not very deep, the soil brings a good drainage to the vine and produces a wine with structure and body.

Les Oliviers 2016, Maison Denuzière, Côtes du Rhône

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

Coming from a region that I love, this cuvee Les Oliviers is a wonderful discovery from the Rhône Valley. I was seduced by the spicy notes and the aromas of Morello cherry, blackberry and plum. Using Grenache and Syrah, this wine express the whole intensity of this terroir. A voluptuous Côtes du Rhône which make you want another glass.

Château Croix de Fillol, 2014, AOC Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

This appellation, stuck between Saint-Emilion and the southwest is a terroir I am fond of because wines there offer the same subtle minerality as in the Libournais’ appellations. I have made astonishing finds there. This château is one of those : very pleasant in the mouth, fruity and perfectly well aged.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Cabernet Franc is not the main grape variety of Bordeaux’s region. Thanksto its ability to ripen prematurely, it is also located in the North as far as the Loire Valley and brings to Bordeaux’s wines, complexity and a spicy touch.

  8. Château Chapelle Labory 2015, Cuvée Parcellaire, Fronsac

Château Chapelle Labory 2015, Cuvée Parcellaire, Fronsac

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

At the nose, remarkable flavours of black and red berries. At the palate, you’ll be charmed by the wine’s density and its elegance. Tannins are silky, with a chocolate taste which is a signature taste of amazing warm vintages. Wines of the vintage 2015 have a very noticeable ageing potential in Bordeaux. This Fronsac can be appreciated right now or in the next two or three years.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

The soil of Fronsac exalts Cabernet Franc, a grape variety that appreciates soils of clay and limestone! It is no coincidence if it is often grown in Libournais, the part of Bordeaux where Fronsac is. It is renowned for its aromatic sharpness, its spicy aromas and the ageing potential it provides to the wine. A subtle blend that celarly shows that even added in small quantity, some grapes can change a lot the wine.

  10. Mondeuse 2017, Adrien Vacher, Vin de savoie

Mondeuse 2017, Adrien Vacher, Vin de savoie

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

Mondeuse is one of my favourite grape varieties and it is from Savoie. It’s with Mondeuse that the greatest red wines of the region are elaborated. I like this juicy sensation that it creates, well balanced by firm tannins. Moreover, it has a lot of acidity, which underlines the crispy side of the red berries aromas. Eventually, good Mondeuses display some enjoyable peppery aromas as it is the case here.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Mondeuse is, as most grape variety grown in Savoie, relatively rare outside of the Alps. Its perfect balance between tannin and acidity make it quite easy to drink it relatively young but also allow to keep it up to 5 years in the cellar where ageing will give it more ripe flavours. Some expert say that Mondeuse is halfway between Burgundy’s Pinot Noir and Northern Rhône’s Syrah.

Mondeuse is known to pair well with charcurterie and cheeses, so it’s sold mainly in the Alps. Moreover, the fact that it can age is a good thing in areas where it’s hard to make the same amount of wine every year. However, it is also now grown in Australia and in the United-States on very different terroirs. Maybe those experiments are the beginning of the rise of Mondeuse! /p>

This wine reminds of a fruit basket filled with fresh and crunchy fruits ! The nose displays various elegant flavours of pear, banana, apple and blackberry. On the palate, we may agree that the smooth start gives charm. This delicious “Graves” manages to combine the subtly flavoured treats of fruits and a gentle texture. The perfect dry white Bordeaux !

    Feuille

    Grape variety

The perfect match ! In the mouth, sauvignon brings expressive aromas marked by notes of white fruits and flowers. Semillon is not that aromatic, but it brings the structure and a buttery touch as well as a hint of sugar.

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

J.Lebègue is an historic winery founded in 1828 by Jules Lebègue at Cantenac, a small village located on the left side of the Gironde, next to Margaux. The company manages to combine the “basics” with innovations. Indeed, the firm has recently distinguished itself by launching the first Bordeaux fully fermented in oak barrels as they do in Burgundy./p>

     Terroir

    Terroir

As its name tells, the soil of the “Graves” is made of gravels, pebbles (called graves in French) and stones. These “graves” reflect solar radiations and gradually redistribute the heat on the bunches contributing to a better grape ripeness. For white wines, it explains why Graves have such a smooth texture.

  13. Château Lieujean 2015, Cru Bourgeois, Haut-Médoc

Château Lieujean 2015, Cru Bourgeois, Haut-Médoc

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

This month, I wanted to take advantage of the fabulous 2015 vintage in Bordeaux : I did that with the famous Château Lieujean, a safe bet of the Médoc vineyards, which is acclaimed by the greatest specialists. What differentiates this Cru Bourgeois is certainly its concentrated expression of black fruits accompanied by a subtle woody flavours. The tannins melt, the wine is supple, juicy and the finish is persistent and deep.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

An emblematic blend of Médoc, where Cabernet Sauvignon is predominant, associated with Merlot in smaller quantities. The Cabernet Sauvignon rather enjoys the gravelly soils of the left bank and brings an elegant tannic structure and an intense power in the mouth whereas the merlot favors the clay soils of the right bank giving balances to the wine by its suppleness and roundness.

     Anecdote

Château Lieujean was founded in the 19th century. Each year for each vintage, Château features in the Cru Bourgeois’ classification which distinguishes the best Médoc wines. Every year, since 2010, the highly anticipated selection of Crus Bourgeois is unveiled to the general public and honours the best wines of the region./p>

     Terroir

    Terroir

Located in Saint-Sauveur near Pauillac, the Château is close to the Garonne and enjoys a temperate microclimate. The Haut-Médoc’s main characteristic is its very special soils made of hard stones that lower the yields of the vines, which gives birth to ripe grapes full of quality and with concentration. It is not far from there that Chateau Lafite, Mouton Rotshchild and Latour are located.

  14. Le Rif 2014, La Ferme du Mont, Vacqueyras

Le Rif 2014, La Ferme du Mont, Vacqueyras

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

In Vacqueyras, making strong wines is a tradition, with a lot of alcohol and a powerful taste. If le Rif indeed displayed these sought-after characteristics, we didn’t expect that much refinement and delicate flowery aromas. This perfectly matches with more typical flavours of ripe fruits and warm spices. Moreover, a great freshness balances the power : this wine is doubtlessly a very nice surprise !

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Grenache is a variety that loves warmth and sun.      Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

This month, two wines were made by the same winemaker but on very different terroirs. The challenge of growing Grenache stimulated Stéphane Vedeau. Indeed, if it’s easy to make strong wines in this area, it is way harder to make fresh, soft and delicate wines. That’s why he chose La Ferme du Mont, at the foot of a hill that brings a little freshness to the vines. Your palate will agree and appreciate this challenge taken, cheers !/p>

  15. Les Griottes 2015, Maison Denuzière, Côtes du Rhône

Les Griottes 2015, Maison Denuzière, Côtes du Rhône

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

In French, “griottes” means Morello cherry. A particularly relevant name as the wine displays very seducing cherry flavours. You can also find aromas of coffee and cocoa that will pair perfectly with a chocolate tart. The whole is carried by a remarkably thin tannic structure. This kind of wine, with powerful aromas and a thin structure, underlines the winemaker’s great skills. Moreover, this kind of red wine is particularily fit for dessert, which is not that common !

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Grenache with syrah is the emblematic blend of the southern Rhône. The reason why it is emblematic is simply because these two grape varieties are good together ! Grenache, which brings very ripe fruit, alcohol and unctuousness in the mouth, might seems a little heavy. But Syrah, a dashing variety full of freshness and spices, tones the Grenache and the whole gives a balanced blend.

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

Located in Condrieu since 1876, Maison Denuzière is characterized by being the first trading house in the Northern Rhone Valley. If they are more known for the prestigious crus they make in Condrieu or Côte-Rôtie, maison Denuzière also produces more accessible wines that are made with the same care and are thought to offer some ageing potential./p>

     Terroir

    Terroir

The northern Rhone Valley’s vineyards are characterized by very narrow steep slopes. The inclination of the slopes allows good drainage of the water thus limiting the water supply to the vine. Vines therefore face a strong water stress that favours grapes’concentration. The wines are then more concentrated, and provide a beautiful tannic mouth feeling. Keep in mind that no good things come without any suffering !

  16. Les Racines 2014, Château du Vieux Puit, Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux

Les Racines 2014, Château du Vieux Puit, Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

What a straight and gourmet wine ! If the wines from Blayais are well known for their abundant yet softened tannins, this Vieux Puit seduced us also by the complexity of its aromas. Fruity flavours of blackberry, spicy pepper and liquorice, and even chocolate, worn by fine and melted tannins. A great success.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

4 grape varieties in this cuvée ‘’Les Racines’’, which is rather rare in Bordeaux! Moreover, the cuvée gives an important place to two "small" grape varieties, since petit verdot and malbec together account for 8% of the blend. A superb Blaye that offers both the enchanting aroma of Merlot and the beautiful structure of the more spicy and tannic varieties.

  17. Louis Soufflot 2015, AOP Mercurey

    Louis Soufflot 2015, AOP Mercurey

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

The south of Burgundy has long been underestimated because no Grands Crus were located there. The truth is that some amazing terroirs lie there and the little bonus of sun they get around Chalon gives a quite persistent version of pinot noir. Mercurey is doubtlessly one of the best appellation in this area !

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Pinot Noir is an old-timer. Experts agree that it was already present in the first century of our era. Indeed, this grape variety would have seen the Gallics fighting against the Romans and would have even witnessed the birth of the Burgundy vineyard. That’s how it became throughout the centuries the main and then the only black variety in Burgundy.

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

The story of Primavinae began in 1951 here in Burgundy and quickly grew : now the respected winemaking company own vineyards in almost all the villages of the region, which is quite uncommon. Moreover, their vines are usually located on the best terroirs, as it is the case for Louis Soufflot’s vines throughout the villages of southern Burgundy./p>

     Terroir

    Terroir

The vineyard of Mercurey enjoys a very special terroir because it lays on a rugged relief punctuated by small hills alternating gentle and severe slopes. This type of relief gives grapes that have benefited from various sun exposures. Therefore, the final blend will display a larger spectrum of aromas, hence a higher level of complexity.

Calicôt 2016, Le clos du Chêne, IGP Côtes du Lot

    The opinion of the sommelier

Not far from Cahors, Calicôt comes from vineyards growing along the bank of the Lot, a humid terroir that gives fruitier wines with the extra freshness that makes it easy to drink and to appreciate at any time.

It as well likes large temperature gaps between day and night, a phenomenon that it also found in the Andes in Argentina where it became the main black grape variety.
