Lionel Osmin was born in the Southwest region and created his winery in 2010, Lionel Osmin & Cie, to share the amazing potential of his region’s vineyards. From Jurançon to Cahors, from Gaillac to Bergerac and Marcillac, Damiens Sartori, oenologist star of the Osmin winery wants to make you discover the grape varieties and the terroirs of this region. Originality and conviviality, are the most important values of the "Osmin spirit"./p>

    Terroir

The vines grow on hillsides made of clay and limestone. The loamy soil brought to the vineyard all the nutrients needed for its development, and kept the freshness to return it to the vine when the temperatures got warmer during summer. The combination of these characteristics allows a slow maturation and a perfect extraction of the aromas.

  2. Edelzwicker, Cave de Hunawihr, Alsace

    Edelzwicker, Cave de Hunawihr, Alsace

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

Edelzwicker is a typical wine from Alsace in eastern France. This wine is unique as it is the only kind of wine from Alsace that blends several grape varieties. The grapes selected so as to elaborate those wines are not the richest ones, but the fact that several varieties are blended gives complexity often carried out by the freshness of young vines, which gives a particularly refreshing and balanced wine.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Edelzwicker is a noble blend. Indeed, « wicker » means blend in old Alsace’s patois, and “edel” means noble. This particular batch is made of pinot blanc, sylvaner and chasselas. The two first ones bring acidity and aromas of flower, peach, apple and citrus. Chasselas gives more specific aromas of mint and may tree.

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

After World War II, wine merchants in Alsace (which was briefly part of Germany during the war) ware disorganised. Therefore, winemakers in Hunawhir were not able to sell their wine so they took action and created their own “coopérative” (an association of winemakers) to deal with this problem. Nowadays, Cave d’Hunawhir is ranked best “coopérative” in Alsace by Revue des Vins de France, the main wine magazine in France./p>

     Terroir

    Terroir

Vosges Mountains protect Alsace’s vineyards from strong winds as its continental climate (very cold during the winter, very hot during summer, but with cold nights) stimulates very efficiently vine stocks. It ensure a slow but regular ripening of grapes which is particularly appreciable for white grapes often less resistant than red grapes. That’s why 90% of the wine made in Alsace is white.

Vigne du Prieuré, 2011, Côtes du Rhône

    Sommelier

The opinion of the wine taster

“Summer holidays are over… To keep in mind the summer exoticism, I suggest you this beautiful bottle of Gigognan that will be paired with a Creole menu concocted by Catherine Naud, a martiniquan chef. The nose of this wine is very expressive and reveals a complex aromatic bouquet with perfumes of fruits and flowers. The bitter aftertaste confers to the wine a nice fresh touch. I definitely don’t advise to aerate the bottle.”

    Feuille

     The winemaker

Annes and Jacques Callet became «winemaker by accident », as they like saying. They didn’t miss a chance to make the Château Gigognan shine and they reveal a strong passion for their vineyards. They are also kind hosts and they take special care of guests of their B&B, which mix the sophisticated Provençal style of XVIII century with the comfort of the modernity. The favourite of My VitiBox is: Sophie’s room!

     Terroir

    The terroir

The vineyard is located in the south of of the Rhone Valley. It’s the region most exposed to the force of natural elements, but it also benefits of 2800 hours of sunshine per year! The Mistral wind is crucial since it allows the vineyard to recovery. However, the secret of these vineyards are in the soil composed of the so called “caïau frejaü” (rounded pebbles) with the ability to store heat by day and diffuse it during night.

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

« I’ve traveled a lot in Savoy these days, and I really wanted to find a nice roussette to taste, and I found this beautiful cuvée of Philippe Grisard. Feuille

    Grape Variety

His cuvees are very appreciated by all the people that tasted them, and we will probably hear more about this domain in the coming years.

     Terroir

    Terroir

Vineyards that produce the Grignan les Adhémars AOP benefit from southern and northern influences of the Côtes du Rhone region. Vineyards are spread on the hills of Valaurie, an unusual soil made of flintstones. This kind of soil absorbs the heat of the sun during the day and distributes it during the night. Flintstones are important in the development of aromas.

  6. Château Grand Lartigue 2009, Grand Cru, Saint Emilion

Château Grand Lartigue 2009, Grand Cru, Saint Emilion

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

2009 is one of the best vintages Saint-Emilion ever produced. One could even compare it to the legendary 2005 vintage, known to have been the best vintage in Bordeaux for decades. Thus, it was important to me to select a wine that could introduce you to great Bordeaux vintages. And of all the wines I tasted, Château Grand Lartigue was the one showing best this wonderful combination of strength, fruit and tannins that 2009 gave us. This wine is to be paired with you best meals!

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Cabernet franc is widespread in the right bank of Bordeaux, but also in the Loire Valley ! The terroir allows it to reach maturity one week before the cabernet sauvignon does, which allows the winemakers to take more time to protect the grapes during the harvest. It is widely grown in Saint- Emilion, and is even the main variety used for one of the most famous wine in the world: Château Cheval Blanc (60%). It is less tannic than cabernet sauvignon, so it ages faster and can be drunk earlier.

     Terroir

    Terroir

The terroir of Saint-Emilion is one of the most famous in the world, and there is reason for that: it is also one of the best ! The ground is a mix of very old sand and wet clay. Moreover, the rules of the appellation are very strict: winemakers cannot make more than 40 hl of wine per hectare, and the wine has to age at least 12 months in oak barrels.

    The opinion of the sommelier

This wine is perfect for a charcuterie board shared with friends on a summer night. This nice wine from Gaillac, made according to the principles of sustainable agriculture, displays complex aromas of cinnamon, gingerbread and red berries. On the palate, its creamy texture and its soft tannins show that it is a refined yet powerful wine.

This wine is the opportunity to present you a pretty unknown variety: braucol ! Also called fer servadou, it basically is from the south-west of France where it is found in many of the most famous appellations of this region: Madiran, Gaillac, Béarn… Braucol is very appreciated by connoisseurs as it gives very elegant wines. Domaine de la Chanade puts forward the use of natural products during the agricultural process: no chemical pesticides here! The grapes are the result of a close collaboration between the team and Mother Nature. At My VitiBox, we particularly like (and encourage) this philosophy!

  8. Château de Mercey, Mercurey

    Château de Mercey, Mercurey

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

Mercurey is not any appellation in Burgundy. Indeed, it is the biggest appellation in the Côte Chalonnaise sub-region and it is known for the intensity of red berries aromas the terroir gives to pinot noir there. This batch is particularly remarkable as it blends the aromas typical of Mercurey with refined woody notes that bring more complexity and smoky aromas. A great wine !

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Wines made from pinot noir have the specificity of displaying a light colour. Tasted during their youth, the wines have fresh aromas of cherry, raspberry and blackberry. As the wine ages, these aromas evolve into more ripened fruits and leather.      Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

In 1875, Antoine Rodet, son of a grocer, inherited a few hectares of land after he married the daughter of a farmer. At that time, the area of Chalon-sur-Saône was going through an economic boom and the young Antoine took the opportunity to invest in agricultural equipment to turn his farm into a vineyard. A few years later, his ambitious son Antonin took over, gave the vineyard his name, and developed it, building the basis of the large and famous winery that Rodet is nowadays.

    Terroir

The vineyards in Mercurey benefit from a special terroir as it lies on a hilly relief that alternates gentle and steep slopes. Roussanne 2015, IGP Méditerrannée

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

This roussanne is concentrated pleasure ! The light greenish gold robe let guess that the wine is explosive. And indeed, it is ! Its nose displays nice aromas of tree fruits (mainly apricot), and on the palate, we feel again these flavours of apricots along with almonds. It’s fruity and refreshing : a perfect wine for summer lunches ! You can obviously pair if with white fish, but it will also be amazing served with a fresh tomatoe tart for example.

Do you feel like standing at the top of a hill facing strong southern winds ? Do not search anymore, take a ticket to Avignon and head to Bastide Saint Dominique. Created in 1976, under the impulsion of Gérard et Marie-Claude Bonnet, the estate’s headquarter is located in a former chapel from the 16th Century at the bottom of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s hills. It’s in this unique place that Eric, their son, elaborates all the family’s red and white wines./p>

     Terroir

    Terroir

The 60 hectares of La Bastide Saint Dominique are planted on a soil of red clay and round pebbles. These pebbles, typical of the southern Rhône Valley, give roussanne a lot of warmth, which is good as this lazy variety can produce too acid wines if it did not get enough heat. In this case, the grapes just got what they need to give a flattering wine with a right level of freshness.

La Petite Bellane 2015, Côtes du Rhône Villages

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

Turn the glass and have a look ; you can now watch thick tears slowly rolling down on the sides. What does it mean ? Probably that this wine has a thick texture. And indeed, on the palate, you’ll feel it along with strong flavours of blackberry and liquorice, typical of 2015 vintage in southern Rhône Valley. It’s doubtlessly a deep and powerful wine that should be paired with a slice of beef !

    Feuille

    Grape variety

If Syrah is the only variety used in Northern Rhône Valley, you can also find it in the South but mainly as a complement in a blend. Petite Bellane, made up of 93% Syrah is therefore pretty exceptional. What is the reason ? ‘’Terroir”. Indeed, as you read above, this terroir conditions are very close to Northern Rhône’s Valley. With perfect conditions for cultivating great Syrah, it would be a pity not to benefit from them for making a unique and delicious wine !

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

Stéphane Vedeau is the great grandson of an agronomic engineer who owned vines in Northern Rhône Valley. However, he decided not to follow his family footsteps by growing his ones in Southern Rhône Valley, between Valréas and Vinsobres. He bought here a vineyard in 2010, and named it Clos Bellane. However, that’s not because he moved away that he decided to change his ancestral techniques and love for Syrah. Family matters !/p>

     Terroir

    Terroir

Clos Bellane’s vines face the East. Sun rises on the East and set on the West. It means that for Clos Bellane’s vines, mornings are longer than afternoons. Therefore, grapes gets concentrated in sugar (that turns into alcohol) thanks to photosynthes is during the morning and ripens in the warm air of afternoon. This is the reason why this wine is quite concentrated in alcohol but at the same time still fresh and well balanced.

  11. Per Dona 2014, Côtes du Roussillon Villages

Per Dona 2014, Côtes du Roussillon Villages

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

This wine is a true lesson of seduction. Per Dona (« for the woman » in Catalan) displays a purple red robe, releases aromas reminiscent of strawberry and cocoa and its tannins are soft as silk. Château Dona Baissas managed to put all the charms of a wine in the same bottle ; I am a spellbound man !

    Feuille

    Grape variety

If Château Dona Baissas is a typical blend of southern wines, this is for a very good reason. Indeed, this assembly forms a very complementary trio. Grenache is expressed by its notes of red fruits, the syrah gives the freshness and a hint of spice and the Carignan carries off the matter with its tannins.      Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

Château Dona Baissas has been classified as one of the best wines of Languedoc-Roussillon since 1988, but its reputation is older than that. During the French Empire, a bunch of Napoleon’s officers discovered this little vineyard and fell in love with the beauty of the landscape, the quality of the wine and the owner. They therefore baptized the estate Mas de la Dona (« Mas of the woman » in Catalan). If the name evolved, the Dona persisted./p>

     Terroir

    Terroir

At 200 meters above sea level, facing the Mediterranean Sea and facing south, the vineyard dominates Roussillon. The parcels are sloping and the soil is rich in brown schists. The schist, a flaky and fractured rock, allows the grapevines to infiltrate up to 7 - 8 meters into the ground to get the rainwater and minerals it needs to be fully developed.

  12. Hautes-Côtes-de-Beaune 2015

    Hautes-Côtes-de-Beaune 2015

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

The appellation Hautes Côtes de Beaune is famous for its delicate red wines. This vintage is not an exception: a bright, shiny, cherry-red colour, and candied redcurrant and strawberry aromas, enhanced by spicy flavours ! On the palate, the wine is subtle, carried by a generous silky texture. The signature of a nice Burgundy wine, as I love them !

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Pinot noir is a fragile grape variety but it has one great strength : it tells a lot about the terroir it grew on. Here, the good level of ripeness shows that the vines benefited from a Southern exposure when the remarkable freshness let us feel that the Hautes-Cotes-de-Beaune are located mainly on windy hilltops.

  13. Comte de Tauzac 2014, Rigal, cahors

Comte de Tauzac 2014, Rigal, cahors

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

Created in 1755 in Cahors, Maison Rigal had developed a unique know-how with the Malbec grape. Vinified in red or rosé, Rigal knows how to express the best of this grape from the South- West of France. This wine “Comte de Tauzac” takes part of the long tradition of Cahors’ wines but with a modern profile of tasting.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Malbec is the most famous grape variety of this region. It grows really well in the soil of the South-West region : gravels and sand. It gives to this appellation unique and powerful tannins, aromas of plum, tobacco and a great capacity for ageing. In foreign countries, Malbec is known as “Black Wine” because of the intense and dark colour of this grape.

Rigal wants to daringly rediscover the historical South-West region of France. Using their unique know-how of winegrowing and wine-making process of Malbec, Rigal’s team, led by Julien Touboul, also takes advantage of varieties of original grapes in this region (Colombard, Gros Manseng, Braucol, etc.) to match them with the most adequate terroirs and get the purest wines./p>

Roc des Mates 2010, Pic Saint-Loup

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

“Roc des Mates is strong, tannic and velvety at the same time. The taste is pleasant and silky. It has a long keeping potential thanks to his 18 ageing in barrels. Here you have a fine wine, very representative of the Pic Saint-Loup denomination. This very tannic wine will seduce those who love masculine wines. Open two hours before serving to round tannins”.

     Winemaker

André Leenhardt, Dedé for his friends, was mayor of his village and president of the syndicate of Pic Saint-Loup wines. He purchased this winery in 1988. Wines from south of France are known for their character and wild aspect; however Dedé has successfully given roundness, fineness and smoothness to this strong wine.

     Terroir

    Terroir

Clayey soil, vegetation and Mediterranean climate are the stronger assets of terroir Pic Saint-Loup. Vineyards of this cuvee are situated on a mountain chain at 150 metres above sea level. In particular vines grow on calcareous-clay slopes that are skeletal thin and pebbly soils. 25-years old vineyards give good quality grapes since the age is in inverse proportion to quantity. Indeed smaller quantity allows grapes to grow better.

Barbera d'Alba 2012, Giacomo Fenocchio, Italia

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

« This cuvee is a good barbera d’Alba that will become more and more complex through the years. Its specificity is its acidity that permits a nice equilibrium with the alcohol (14°). This wine was bottled one month ago so it is still young and it will become more complex through the years. »

    Feuille

    Grape variety

The barbera is one of the first grape varieties that were produced in Italy. Actually, barbera comes from the word “barba” that refers to very complex roots, and “albéra” that refers to a place where we planted vineyards instead of a forest. It is a grape variety that produces dark and acid wines.

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

From one generation to another and for five generations now, the members of the Fenocchio family have been land workers. We talked to them a lot over the past few weeks, and as they don’t speak English or French and as we don’t speak Italian, we had some surprising chats! Speaking with our hands on the telephone isn’t easy.

     Terroir

    Terroir

Since 1684, the Fenocchio family cultivates 14 hectares of vineyards in the North West of Italy of which 2,5 hectares are used to cultivate barbera d’Alba. Aged of 30 years, the vineyards produce grapes that are more mature and with higher quality. In addition, the limestone soil favors the production of wines that are supple and very acid. However, its acidity is diminished by the volcanic sediments coming from the soil that brings delicacy to the wine.

    Malbec, 2011, Mariflor, Argentine

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

This wine is a real bodybuilder: rich, powerful and full-bodied! Its licorice and mint flavours are sharp, and the structure is dense and vinous. This wine fits perfectly with exotic and spicy food. It has good aging potential, while being friendly to taste young. Moreover, it will give you the opportunity to discover or rediscover the talents of Michel Rolland, a very talented (and sometimes controversial!) winemakerfrom Bordeaux.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Malbec is a grape variety originally from South-West France, both powerful and fruity. It is still widely cultivated in France but it’s in Argentina, where it was introduced in the 19th century, that it is the most common. La Brossette 2012, Touraine

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

I found this organic wine really well made. I enjoyed its flavours of red berries and cherry blossom. We feel the talent when we feel the silky texture that only the best winemakers of Touraine achieve to get in their wines. There is also a little bit of bitterness in the finish, which shows the organic side of the wine. I suggest youpair it with a vanilla panna cotta with raspberry sauce.

    Grape variety

This cuvee is a blend of gamay and cabernet franc. It is a pretty common blend in the Loire Valley. Gamay comes from Beaujolais where it is still the main variety. And gamay is not any grape variety. Indeed, it has a rare specificity that is that its skin is black but its juice is white.

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

In 2010, Marie and Thierry Delaunay, owner of the Domaine Delaunay, chose to buy three hectares of organic vines to their Japanese neighbour. As the estate was named after the Japanese winemaker, they had to change the name. It occurs that the estate was along the Rue de La Brosse, hence the name brossette that means hedgehog in casual French.

     Terroir

    Terroir

With 4000 hectares, Touraine is one of the biggest appellations in the Loire Valley, and the estates there are usually pretty big. It is not the case of Domaine de La Brossette since it only covers three hectares, but located in the area known to give the best wines. The soil is a mix of sand and clay and the surface is covered with pebbles. This kind of soil guarantees to wine to remain healthy, therefore helping to make organic wines.

    Bellegrave du Poujeau, Haut-Médoc 2011

    The opinion of the sommelier

This little vineyard in Médoc is a nice discovery. The attack is very pleasant and the aromatic profile of this wine is complex, mainly based on strawberry and blackcurrant aromas perfectly enhanced by a marked acidity.      Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

Château Bellegrave du Poujeau is a typical example of what is called a gardener’s wine. With only 4 hectares, Jean-Pierre Cantelaube can give a lot of attention to each of his vine stocks. For example, they are all pruned individually which allow to reach the highest level of ripeness possible each time, so there are no more bad vintages!

     Terroir

    Terroir

The vines are planted on a particularly thick ground of Graves. These big and hard round pebbles do not retain water and nutrients on the contrary to the layer of clay these lie on. Therefore, vines’ roots have to struggle through the pebbles to get their water and nutrients in the clay. It is a good thing as it forces the vine to be stronger so as to reveal the whole potential of the grapes!

    The opinion of the sommelier

This Côtes-du-Rhône’s purple flashy colour suggests that the wine will be fresh and lively. On the palate, the wine is indeed lively and comes along with soft melted tannins that enhance the explosive aromas of flowers and red berries. Just after swallowing, pay attention to the remarkable length of that wine and take the time to appreciate the nice spicy aftertaste. If you enjoy refined wines, this bottle is for you !

    The opinion of the sommelier

Based in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Ogier is a major winery of the southern Rhône Valley. Through the years, they developed strong connections with the best winegrowers in the area.
