    The opinion of the sommelier

    This little vineyard in Médoc is a nice discovery. The attack is very pleasant and the aromatic profile of this wine is complex, mainly based on strawberry and blackcurrant aromas perfectly enhanced by a marked acidity. This wine is at the beginning of its peak, but if you enjoy tertiary aromas, it will easily wait for you a few years in your cellar.

    Merlot and cabernet sauvignon is the most widespread blend in Bordeaux. Cabernet franc, without being rare, is less common. It’s the main variety in Chinon in the Loire Valley and it is often used in Bordeaux to complete the blends with its fresh red berries aromas.

    A winemaker, a family

    Château Bellegrave du Poujeau is a typical example of what is called a gardener’s wine. With only 4 hectares, Jean-Pierre Cantelaube can give a lot of attention to each of his vine stocks. For example, they are all pruned individually which allow to reach the highest level of ripeness possible each time, so there are no more bad vintages!

     The vines are planted on a particularly thick ground of Graves. These big and hard round pebbles do not retain water and nutrients on the contrary to the layer of clay these lie on. Therefore, vines’ roots have to struggle through the pebbles to get their water and nutrients in the clay. It is a good thing as it forces the vine to be stronger so as to reveal the whole potential of the grapes!

    This Brouilly impressed me with its refinement and power. The uncommon nose starts the party with nice aromas of fruits and peonies. On the palate, you will feel again this deep intensity along with minerality, this salty like impression that characterizes the best Brouilly, the most famous of the ten “Cru” of the Beaujolais region.

    1395 is the year everything changed for gamay. Indeed, it is the year Philipe Le Hardi, Duke of Burgundy, decided that only pinot noir could be cultivated in Burgundy, and that gamay had to be grown in Beaujolais, at the south border of his duchy. Nowadays, gamay is still the only black variety grown in Beaujolais, but it spread a little and you can also taste nice wines from gamay in the Loire Valley and in Switzerland.

    In the Beaujolais region, wine estates usually cover dozens of hectares. Julien Duport, Régis Luttenauer and Denis Vedrinne made a different choice and bought only 3 hectares. But not any hectares ! Indeed, their vines are located on the best terroir of Brouilly and have one particularity : they are more than 100 years old on average ! The three friends care a lot about their vines which repay them with amazing grapes allowing them to elaborate exclusive batches of great Brouilly./p>

     Domaine des Cadoles’ three hectares are planted on a granitic soil. The main characteristic of granitic soils is that it has strong filtering properties and therefore let the water gets deep taking on the way nutrients away from the roots. So it submits the vines to a high level of water stress. It’s a good thing for gamay as its lazy variety has to be challenged to reveal its full potential.

    Château l’Evêché is ruled by skilled people ! Indeed, we already chose for My VitiBox their Bordeaux Supérieur and their first Saint-Emilion Grand Cru. There is their second Grand Cru that impressed us. Tannins are fine, the aromatic structure is very elegant and we get magnificent scents of ripen black berries, typical from high class merlots. On the palate, you will also find fine tastes of liquorice and hints of chocolate.

    Merlot is the most widespread variety in Saint-Emilion and cabernet franc the noblest (it’s the only variety in Château Cheval Blanc). This nice blend gives the best both varieties have to offer : merlot expresses its delightful aromas of ripe fruits like plum and cabernet franc brings fine tannins and warm spices’ flavours like liquorice.

    Eight centuries old, Château l’Evêché really took off in 2008 when it was purchased by Jean-Sébastien Capdevielle. This former foie gras producer wanted to take a new challenge and spent four years looking for a terroir that inspired him. He eventually found Château l’Evêché where he did a huge work with his team to produce a few years later great wines considered to be rising stars in Saint-Emilion./p>

     The vines used to elaborate La Chapelle-Lescours are planted on a soil made of fine clay and large heavy round pebbles called graves. This kind of soil perfectly regulates the water supply to make sure vine stocks get all the nutrients they need but are not flooded which could result in diluted wines.

     Located in the heart of Gascony, the vineyard benefits from the oceanic climate. Thanks to the proximity of the Pyrenees, the significant temperature variations between day and night is able to preserve fruity aromas.     This Pessac-Léognam does credit to its designation. It was vinified in the purest tradition of Bordeaux by the team of the winery Pape Clément, his famous neighbour (another propriety of Bernard Magrez). Why the Serenity? Because the winemakers have to be patient and temperate to best express these vineyards.…

    A typical blending of this designation. The merlot gives the suppleness, whereas the cabernet sauvignon will bring structure and a tannic force that increase the keeping potential. The aromas of this grape variety get more intense when tasted after 18 month of aging in oak barrels.

    Known for his exceptional wines, Bernard Magrez is an autodidact, become the first owner of the grand wines classified at Bordeaux. We call him “ the men of 40 wineries”!

    Pessac-Léognan is the renowned designation of the region of Graves, to the south of Bordeaux. His soil made of clays, limestone and gravels give to the Pessac-Léognam his distinctive taste. The soil stores sunlights during the day and free it during the night and it does a remarkable natural draining. These vineyards are closed to the well-known Château Pape Clément, Grand Cru Classé de Graves.

Its vintage 2009 stands out for its nice balance, boldness and lightness. And it will improve even more with ageing.     The Roy-Trocard family purchased its first vineyards in the Libournais in 1628. We can say that they know about wine and...they love it! Jean and Bénédicte Trocard, managers of this winery, said: “The product that we produce, the wine, is the result of soil, sky and men’s passion”.

     The Mancèdre winery extends for 11 hectares on the east side of Pessac-Léognan. The vineyard flourishes on a soil made of gravels coming from the Pyrenees. Gravels give strength and lightness to wine. Grapevines also benefit from an excellent hydric regulation and natural poverty of soil, elements necessary to obtain ripened and concentred grapes.

Without too much alcohol, this cuvee is perfect both for pre-dinner drinks and for summer dinners. »

    The Lafon family has been owning the Valensac domain for generations, but it is now managed by Edwige Thuilé as the Lafon family moved to Brussels. It is an interestind domain as they cultivate unusual grape varieties for the Languedoc-Roussillon region, such as Petit Manseng, Riesling or Petit Verdot.

     This property is located in the center of the Languedoc- Roussillon region, very close to the editerranean sea. It benefits from the maritime influence, and that enables soils to be fresh despite the high temperatures during summer.

    I am quite happy I found this delicious Côtes de Blaye. The mouth is smooth and harmonious. It is like having a ballet dancer wearing a silk dress in your mouth. The finish, which is the taste that stays on the palate after the wine has been swallowed, is long and spicy.

    The blend merlot - cabernet sauvignon is emblematic of Bordeaux. Indeed, most of the wines from Bordeaux are made from these two varieties, sometimes adding a third one in very small quantity. Merlot develops fine red berries aromas and gives softness to the wine. Cabernet sauvignon brings acidity and strong tannins. It is also mostly thanks to cabernet sauvignon that this wonderful wine has some aging potential.

    The Gregory family is well known around the vineyards of Bordeaux. Their ancestors started making money by selling harvesting machines. But working with so many winemakers made them feel like making their own wine and this is how they bought several estates in Bordeaux, including Chateau Puynard and the famous Château La Rivière.

     The vineyard of Château Puynard covers 17 hectares. The vines are planted on hillsides along the Gironde river, in the Côtes de Blaye area. The close underground is a mix of clay and sand. When you go deeper, the underground has several limestone layers. This makes a really good terroir to grow highly concentrated grapes of merlot.

    It’s as if the beauty of Château d’Eck reflects on its wines like the sun in a mirror. This magnificent castle makes the pride of the Pessac-Léognan appellation. The wine displays aromas of cherry and wood, especially cedar. If you wish, you can keep it in your cellar so its aromas and texture evolve: it can ages up to seven years!

    The merlot is fruity and low in tannins. The cabernet sauvignon is strong in tannins and displays mainly vegetal aromas. The two were made to complete each other. And that is what Bordeaux is all about since the blend merlot and cabernet sauvignon is the most typical one there. But I would like to draw your attention to the petit verdot. It has always been present in Bordeaux, and since it is not sensitive to rot, it is more and more grown as the winemakers try to cut on pesticides.

    Located in Cadaujac just outside of Bordeaux, the Château d’Eck is a real medieval castle where one of the best wines of Pessac-Léognan is made. The castle was the first property of the Duke of Aquitaine and then it belonged to the King of England when the region was under English domination. François Eck inherited the castle and the estate in 1824 and gave it his own name!

     The Pessac-Léognan appel-lation was created 30 years ago to distinguish the best part of the Graves appellation. Graves is a big appellation that got its name from the stones that lie on the ground (Graves means pebble in old French) and helps the grapes to mature by accumulating the heat during the day and redistributing it during the night.

    This wine from Château les Donats is absolutely delicious and I am really proud to present it to you ! Very typical of the dry white wines from Bergerac, this batch displays nice aromas of citrus fruits and flowers wonderfully enhanced by a strong acidity that gives all this amazing liveliness to the wine. To pair it perfectly, I suggest you serve it with grilled white fish or oysters.

    Sauvignon blanc in the most common white variety in the Loire Valley and in Bordeaux. It is known to give to the wines liveliness and refreshing aromas. In Bordeaux and Bergerac, it is often blend with sémillon, a very sweet variety, so as to balance its high level of sugar with acidity.

    In 1994, Patrick Somers, heir of a family of Belgian wine merchants and passionate about winemaking, decided to produce his own wine. To do so, he visited a few vineyards, and felt in love with Château les Donats that he bought and entirely renovated. To keep on improving the quality of the wines, he was joined in 2011 by the oenologist Olivier Verhelst who implemented new cultivation techniques and updated the winemaking process./p>

     Château les Donats’ vines cover 15 hectares on the sides a valley digged throughout the millenniums by the Dordogne River in the heart of Périgord. The plots have various exposures to the sun. This diversity allows choosing just the right exposure for each of the six grapes varieties that are grown in the vineyard.

    Equilibre means balance in French, a perfectly chosen name for this blend of merlot and cabernet sauvignon. This very elegant wine is perfectly balanced between the warmness and alcohol of the merlot and the tannic structure and acidity of the cabernet sauvignon. The whole is enhanced by nice aromas of red berries and vanilla. This wine will bring you a lot of pleasure !

    Merlot got famous in Bordeaux where it is the king variety of the right bank, notably in Pomerol where it is largely predominant. However, over the last 60 years, merlot has been more and more planted in Languedoc as the winemakers were shifting from producing a high quantity of bad wine to a small quantity of more qualitative wine. It gives warmth to the wine and soften the potentially harsh tannins of cabernet sauvignon.

    Domaine de l’Arjolle is renowned in Languedoc for being especially innovative. The brothers Prosper et Louis-Marie Teisserenc fear nothing and were for example the first to try growing zinfandel in the 1980’s as it was just brought back from Australia. Nowadays, they have been joined by their sons and they continue to grow together the family estate./p>

     The vines are planted on sandy soils with a lot of different sediments brought throughout the milleniums by the neighboring sea. Thus, the ground is full of various nutrients used by the grapes to nourish themselves and grow. That variety of nutrients gives rich and complex wines.

    Côtes de Gascogne is an amazing region mainly known for Armagnac. However, the area offers as well numerous great terroirs for white wines. The wine displays an intense and fresh bouquet, which is typical of Côtes de Gascogne, with aromas of citrus fruits and herbs. The mouthfeel is very fresh, long on the palate and has a nice salty touch. I suggest you serve it along with cod and melon.

    The large number of varieties used in the blend contributes to the wine’s complexity. Colombard, a typical variety of Gascogne, gives the fruity aromas. It is almost all the time blended with ugni blanc, which enriches the wine with floral flavours. Eventually, gros manseng, often used to elaborate sweet wines, gives the wine its light sweetness.

    A beautiful wine that pays tribute to Syrah, a grape variety I particularly like. It reminds me of my years spent at La Tour d’Argent where I had fun to pair this grape variety with different duck recipes.     Tasting this Saint-Émilion Grand Cru was a shot of pleasure! The deep ruby colour comes along thick and promising tears. On the palate, the wine is rich, the tannins are refined yet very present, and you will definitely appreciate its astonishing length.

    The varietal carignan perfectly complements the syrah and it finds its natural environment in the Corbières. Once, carignan had a bad reputation due to its large diffusion. Thanks to the progress in winemaking techniques, many winemakers produce great wines based on this grape variety.

    Lirac is the appellation located just in front of Chateauneuf Du-Pape! In the Lirac vineyard, we can also find the famous rounded pebbles, so characteristic of Châteauneuf: those little stones were made famous thanks to their ability ofstoring heat during the day to return it to the vines at night. This wine is sophisticated, and I truly enjoyed the silky tannins, the spicy notes and the good balance of alcohols. Powerful, it goes perfectly with strong dishes, such as meat in sauce.

    The domaine Coudoulis managed to maintain a good reputation since its takeover by Bernard Callet in 1996. This winemaker’s choices have a lot to play in this reputation: indeed, the yield is limited to 42 hectoliters per hectare, harvest is done manually and the grappes destalking is made very carefully so that the tanks contain the least possible impurities.

     The vines grow on a red calcareous-clay soil, full of pebbles accumulating heat during the day and returning it at night. The terraces above the village of Saint-Laurent-les-Arbres ensure a flow of rainwater, hence avoiding any stagnation that would damage the roots, while the Mistral wind regulates the humidity of the vineyard.

    There is a lot of freshness in that wine. I really appreciated the mineral aromas that come straight from the flints that the soil of Touraine is made of. Its aromas of fresh citrus and white fruits should definitely please you. This wine is to be enjoyed with friends around a seafood platter. I am really happy to present this wine, made with passion by Fabien and Laurence Dinocheau, brother and sister, who really love their terroir and are rising stars in the Loire valley.

    Seen from far away, the Dinocheau family could seem lazy. Indeed, their policy is to do the least they can on their vines. This results in a minimization of the use of herbicide to control soil erosion. «We produce wines that reflect the characteristics of our land”. Thus, thanks to the Dinocheau, it really is a piece of Touraine that you sip while drinking their delicious sauvignon!

     The Dinocheau vineyard is located at the very heart of the Loire region, in the middle of all the Châteaux. Chambord, Chenonceau, Amboise… are certainly what attract so many tourists in the area, but they are not the only stars there. The flints on which the vines are planted are known to accumulate the heat of the sun during the day and to give it back to the grapes at night, ensuring that the sauvignon will reach a perfect maturity.

    This wine is already ten years old and starts offering nice aromas of evolution. However, it still has a lot of freshness and ripe blackberries aromas, great Languedoc’s wines hallmark. At the nose step, you can already smell the nice evolved aromas of leather. At the mouth step, we feel a nice balance between ripe fruits and spices, typical flavours of syrah.

    Originally, syrah is Rhône Valley’s emblematic variety. But syrah is a strong variety that can thrive on a wide variety of terroirs on which it gives quite different wines. The result is spicy and smooth wines like this amazing Grès de Montpellier.

    The 57 hectares of Domaine de Silène used to belong to Jacques and Laurent Pourcel, two twin brothers, famous for their three stars restaurant “Le jardin des sens” in Montpellier. In 2000, the estate was bought by Robert Skalli, a major Languedoc wine producer famous for having built an empire thanks to his outstanding ability to detect the potential of wine estates. Domaine de Silène was one of his great successes: he turned a great estate into an amazing one./p>

     Domaine de Silène’s vines develop on a poor limestone soil in the warm and dry mountains around Montpellier. As a consequence, the vine stocks have to grow very deep roots in order to find what it needs to thrive.
