The opinion of the sommelier

Bandol is a unique appellation. It is the only one in Provence that is entirely very close to the sea, and it is the only one to use Mourvedre, a very interesting variety, as its main grape. It gives deep, powerful, spicy wines that get better with time. Domaine de la Garenne shows what a typical, seriously elaborated Bandol is supposed to be. 

 

Terroir

Only on southern slopes, vines in Bandol are permanently exposed to sunlight. At the bottom of the hills, the Mediterranean Sea is a great temperature moderator. The soil is very poor in nutrients and water, which stimulates the vine stocks to grow deep roots and therefore not to focus too much on grapes. Thanks to that, winegrowers can harvest small but powerful grape berries that give great wines.

Mourvedre is the emblematic variety of Bandol. It gives very small berries with a very think skin which explains why there is such an impressive tannic structure, as tannins in red wines come from grapes’ skin. It is blended with Grenache to give a creamier structure, to Carignan for sweet aromas and to Cinsault to give more body and peppery flavours.

Bandol is normally not a very rainy area; but it was even worse in 2016 as the region suffered from draught. It was in fact a good thing for vines, not for the quantity if grapes grown, but for the quality.

Domaine de la Garenne is Balincourt Family’s property since 1886. It’s located only 5 kms away from the Sea. The Family was knighted 1556 wich explain why you’ll see a blazon on the label. Nowadays, Béatrix de Balincourt in in charge.
