The opinion of the sommelier

It is with pleasure that I present this month a wine produced in my region: Burgundy. To be more specific, this fantastic wine is from Mercurey, the largest appellation of the Côte Chalonnaise. Les Crêts 2012 is awell balanced and fruity wine with notes of blackcurrant and gooseberry. To me, it is a perfect example of the refinement of Pinot Noir.

Terroir

Les Crêts (which means “the peaks” in French) are nestled on 1.3 acres at the top of a hill and are exposed south. The hill is chalk in the surface and in the depth, so water is filtered before it gets to the roots of the vines. The fact that the water gets so pure before returning to the surface through the roots is a key factor to reveal all the delicacy of Pinot noir.

lecepage Grape variety

If you need to know one thing about wines from Burgundy, it is that when they are allowed to have a specific appellation, it means that they are made from a single variety of grape: Chardonnay for white wines and Pinot noir for red wines. Pinot Noir is a delicate grape, sensitive to soil and climate. It is much less robust than Cabernet Sauvignon for example. However, it can, if the best conditions are gathered, give the best wines in the world. Generally pale in colour, this variety often has a good alcohol content and acidity, with fine and elegant tannins.

lemillesime Vintage

It would be an understatement to say that the 2012 vintage in Burgundy was complicated for winemakers. Problems began during winter with the combination of a lot of rain and pretty warm temperatures for the season that allowed the emergence of parasites (like mildew) that led to the loss of part of the harvest. The summer didn’t help as theheatwave burned the most exposed grapes, destroying even more of the already limited harvest. However, even if there were not many grapes remaining, the quality was high.

lerecoltant A winemaker, a family

The village of Mercurey was named after the messenger of the gods in Roman mythology, Mercury. Indeed, the Romans built in the village a temple dedicated to this Roman god. The wine estate itself is managed by a father, Yves de Suremain, and his son, Loic. Before them, five generations have worked in Mercurey. Indeed, in the de Suremain family, men have been winemakers in Mercurey since 1870.
