The opinion of the sommelier
Settled since 1816 in Beaune, Maison Jaffelin is a historic winery in Burgundy, a confidential one and one of my favourite. It is a real pleasure to introduce you the appellation of Rully, located in the Côte chalonnaise in southern Burgundy. Vinified by the young and talented Marinette Garnier this cuvee has delicate tannins with aromas of red fruits and roses.
Terroir
On limestones and located between 230 and 300m of altitude, this vineyard has unique climatic conditions. Lots of sun and winds help to chase the humidity and diseases off the grapes. The relative altitude of the terroir provides freshness to the wine.
Grape variety
It is difficult to grow Pinot Noir as it is really sensitive to diseases. This grape blossoms exceptionally well on the limestone soils of Burgundy. Pinot Noir provides aromas of red fruits and aromas roses to the wines of Rully appellation.
Vintage
This year was difficult because of frost. The loss in production was estimated at around 70%. Fortunately a hot summer came after the cold spring and let the vineyards build up their strength in order to obtain quality grapes. 2016 vintage is finally a good one offering excellent wines thanks to the quality of the grapes that survived spring.
