The opinion of the sommelier

This month, I give you the opportunity to taste a truly fantastic “Cru” from the Beaujolais. From the blueish reflections on the ruby colour, you can guess the strong aromatic intensity of the wine. I smell soft aromas of red and black berries, typical of Morgon. It is preferable to serve this wine at 15° and I suggest you pair it with a nice coq au vin. 

 

Terroir

One of the specificities of Beaujolais is the use of carbonic maceration at the beginning of the winemaking process. Carbonic maceration consists in putting non-crushed grape clusters in sealed vessels. By making the fermentation process slower and avoiding oxidation, this technique widely used in Morgon gives the wine its particularly fruity aromas.

During the Middle Ages, gamay was the main variety grown in Burgundy. But in 1395, Philippe le Hardi, Duke of Burgundy, declared that gamay was “vile and deceitful” and therefore ordered its uprooting. During the following centuries, gamay was replaced by pinot noir in Burgundy but remained cultivated in Beaujolais ever since.

lemillesime Vintage

2014 was an exceptional vintage for Beaujolais’ winemakers. The warm and dry winter spared the vines from the plague of frost which weakens the plant. Then, spring and summer were warm and sunny: therefore, the grapes reached a very high level of ripeness. This is why this wine is particularly concentrated and has very powerful fruity aromas.

Created in 1953 by René Gautier, Jacky’s father, Domaine de Colette was at the time only a few acres of vines abandoned since World War 1. René worked hard to revive the vines and bought several neighbouring plots and the estate eventually reached the size of 8 hectares. When he was only 17 years old, Jacky inherited his father’s estates + his uncle’s. He merged both in 1994 to make a big estate of 14 hectares.
