Puy Saint-front 2016, Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

Located next to the well-known village of Saint-Émilion, Castillon is the rising appellation in Bordeaux. It benefits from an outstanding terroir and is getting more and more popular thanks to its with attractive price / pleasure ratio. This is of course the case of the Puy Saint-Front 2016 wich shows how great can some Bordeaux wines be for good prices.

    Grape variety

Cabernet Franc is far from being the most widespread grape variety in the Bordeaux region. However, thanks to its ability to mature early, it is also used further north in the Loire Valley. It brings to the wine notes of crunchy fruit and very nice spicy flavours.

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

In the 18th century, Baron Alfred de Luze founded Maison A. de Luze & Fils, first specialised in maturing and ageing the wines before selling those. Man of vision and a fine negotiator, Baron De Luze was one of the pioneers in the export of Bordeaux wines in new countries. In addition to its international network, Maison De Luze bought several chateaux in Bordeaux such as Château Paveil, a very old cru from the Margaux region, or Château Malleret in Haut-Médoc./p>

  2. Mas d'Anglade 2015, Languedoc-Montpeyroux

    Mas d'Anglade 2015, Languedoc-Montpeyroux

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

Montpeyroux is a rising appellation in Languedoc ! I really like the minerality and the generosity of its wines. The nose of Mas d'Anglade is extremely seductive thanks to its aromas of blackberry, cherry and spices. The cuvee reveals on the palate a salinity carried by great tannins which are express on a persistent and suave finish.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Out of the three grape varieties that make up this wine, carignan is certainly the least known. However, it often completes the blend of great southern wines, especially when it’s from old vines. Carignan wines are appreciated for their power, their generosity and the elegance of their tannic structure.

Château Lieujean 2012, Haut-Médoc Cru Bourgeois

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

This month, we chose Chateau Lieujean, one of the best Cru Bourgeois in Médoc. It is deeply concentrated, with intense flavours of black berries, delicate woody aromas. Tannins are very present yet quite silky, and the length is long and juicy. A very complete and tasty Bordeaux.

    Feuille

In Medoc, all wines are blends. And the two main varieties by far are Merlot and Cabernet-Sauvignon, the second one being almost all the time dominant. Lieujean Family is acknowledged in Bordeaux as early as 1868. The Estate was already known back then to give wines with a strong personality. Cuvée Gourmande 2012, Touraine

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

« This month I would like you to discover the Domaine de la Charmoise. Its wines are outstanding in terms of price quality ratio. The Ma- rionnets, the owners of this winery, are passionate about their work and this is shown in what they produce! This Cuvee Gourmande will probably enhance the St Pierre that the Chef Philippe Vétélé proposes this month. »

    Feuille

    Grape variety

The blend of these three grape varieties is common in the Bordeaux region. Merlot brings fruit hints and velvet feelings to the wine, while the cabernet sauvignon brings power and robustness. Légende d'Automne 2012, Bordeaux

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

For this Vitibox dedicated to the wines of Bordeaux, I really felt like making you discover Château Haut-Meyreau. It is not located in one of Bordeaux top appellations, but the winemaker’s skills seem to be enough to build a reputation since the Château is out of stock six months a year. This wine is very elegant, with subtle aromas of flowers.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Merlot and cabernet sauvignon work really well together! Merlot is the most common grape in the Bordeaux region, although this dominance is quite new. In the nineteenth century, it was the cabernet sauvignon that was the most cultivated variety. But after the second world war, the right bank of Bordeaux, where the merlot was dominant, got more and more successful, thanks to its prestigious appellations like Pomerol or Saint-Emilion. Merlot has less tannins than cabernet sauvignon, which makes it easier to enjoy young.

The wine estate is located in the “Entre-deux-Mers” area, in Dardenac, just outside of Saint-Emilion. Over the years, the estate grew by buying new parcels to its neighbours. From 5 hectares in 1802, it grew to 76 hectares today, which is quite impressive!

  7. Malbec du Clos 2012, Cahors

    Malbec du Clos 2012, Cahors

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

When you think about Cahors, it’s not long before you think of Jean-Luc Baldès, one of the most talented winemakers of the appellation. I was not surprised to find in that wine delicious flavours of blackcurrant and of course a lot of tannins, as they are typical characteristics of malbec. However, I was more surprised to feel menthol aromas which were much more unexpected!

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Nowadays, malbec is famous all around the world thanks to the wines from Argentina, where this variety is widely grown. Originally, malbec comes from the southwest of France, where it has been grown since the Middle Ages. France is still the second producer of malbec behind Argentina. Since 1830, the Baldès family has been developing the Clos Triguedina passing from father to son the passion of making good wine and of course the skills to achieve that. Nowadays, Jean-Luc Baldès is an iconic figure of the appellation. Talented and passionate, he is known in the area under the name “the master of malbec”.

     Terroir

    Terroir

The terroir of Cahors is known for being very dry. It rains very little, which is a wonderful thing for the grapes that hence can perfectly mature. The Clos Triguedina covers around 65 hectares of mixed clay, silica and limestone. Just remember that this kind of ground ensures that the vine is subjected to enough water stress to make sure that the grapes will develop various aromas.

Hautes Côtes de Beaune 2012, Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Beaune

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

Burgundy’s red wines arefascinating : they all are elaborated with the same grape variety and yet they offer an astonishing diversity. This is due to the unique diversity of terroirs in the region. This Hautes Côtes de Beaune displays beautiful aromas of raspberry and rose delicately enhanced by a gentle acidity and very thin tannins. However, pinot noir is a fragile and demanding variety : do not hesitate to aerate it several hours before service so it fully displays its bouquet.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

In Burgundy, all the great white wines come from chardonnay and all the red from pinot noir. But if chardonnay is robust and can be planted virtually everywhere, pinot noir is different. Water goes through the vine roots and influences the wine aromas.

The combination of muscat with small white grains and viognier is surprising. The muscat with small grains is full of rosewood and litchi aromas. Jean Marc and Eliane Lafage are the owners of this domain that is six generations old and spread over 160 hectares. They are totally dedicated to this family owned company. Over the years, the cuvees got several rewards: 10 gold medals at the Concours Général de Paris, a national record! Their children, Léa – 7 years old – and Nicolas – 8 years old – are already very interested in being part of this adventure. We wish them as much success as their parents!

     Terroir

    Terroir

Set in the foothills of the Pyrenees, the vineyards of the “Côté Floral” of the Domaine Lafage are cultivated on a clay-limestone subsoil. The clay brings freshness to the floor, a coolness that we also find in the wine, while its minerality comes from the lime stones. If you have the opportunity to go to the Domaine Lafage, you will probably notice the presence of tramontane, a wind from the North West, very strong in this region.

They produced this cuvee in order to put it on the wine list of Yannick Alléno’s restaurants. It is a gastronomic wine, that will probably surprise you with its lard mouth, slightly smoked.      A wine, a family

Michel Chapoutier is a lover of grapevines! Nowadays, Michel is very famous in the Rhône Valley and his wines are very successful, especially in the international market. This success can be explained by Michel’s motto: “Don’t follow or copy, but initiate, create and pave the way”.

Grapevines of this Saint-Joseph are planted on a shallow soil, composed of granite. It is a typical terroir of the Saint-Joseph designation. Château d'Eyran 2011, Pessac-Léognan, Bordeaux

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

I am in love with this Pessac-Léognan, typical of the appellation, and I think it will charm you. The aging in oak barrels gave the wine sophisticated smells of cocoa, coffee and vanilla. In the mouth, I really enjoyed its silky tannins and the fruity aromas that recall the presence of merlot and petit verdot in the blend. You’ll enjoy this wine on beef pieces cooked rare.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

The combination of cabernet sauvignon and merlot is very usual in Bordeaux. The strong structure and the tannins of the cabernet sauvignon make a wonderful couple with the fruits and the softness of the merlot.      Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

Château d’Eyran became the property of the de Seze family in 1796. And more than two centuries later, they still run the vineyard! And apparently, there centuries old skills are really appreciated considering the success of the Château d’Eyran in Pessac-Leognan. The wines are aged in oak barrels, providing harmonious woody flavours and aromas.

     Terroir

    Terroir

Pessac-Léognan is known to be the best part of a bigger appellation in Bordeaux called “Graves”. It comes from ancient French and means pebbles. Indeed, for millenniums, the Garonne River has been bringing all those pebbles therefore creating one of the best terroir in the world. Indeed, the “graves” challenge the vine to find its nutrients, which makes it stronger, and reflects the heat from the sun to the grapes.

    Origami 2012, Bordeaux

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

In this month of April, I am proud to present you Origami by Chateau l’Evêché. This wine is a perfect example of the best you can find on the right bank of Bordeaux ! Its main characteristic is an amazing smoothness that will enchant your buds. Moreover, this wine is amazingly balanced and blackberries aromas pair perfectly with vanilla flavours brought by a delicate maturation in oak barrels.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

This wine is mainly elaborated with merlot as are most wines from Bordeaux’s right bank. Merlot gives flattering fruity wines but needs a lot of care and attention to gain complexity. Indeed, merlot is a fertile variety which gives high quantity of low quality wines when it’s let entirely free. Like other right bank good winemakers, Chateau l’Evêché masters the art of stressing merlot so it gives powerful and refined wines.

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

The history of Château l’Evêché starts several centuries ago when the bishop of the area asked peasants to plant vines around the chapel of Lescours. Château l’Evêché was born. It was then awaken in 2008 after a long hibernation when Jean Sébastien Capdevielle and Anthony Ginter got in charge of the 6 hectares located in Nerigean./p>

Château l’Evêché, a rising star of Saint-Emilion, also owns 6 hectares just on the other side of the Dordogne River. Merlot and cabernet franc, the only variety used in Château Cheval Blanc, are cultivated with as much care as for the Grand Cru. The only difference is that this side of the river is sunnier and wines are therefore a little sweeter. Yummy!

    Bonificat 2001, Madiran

    The opinion of the sommelier

People of Madiran have been growing vines since the 5th Century. Wines of Madiran are known to have a great ageing potential : that’s why we are proud to present this month a wine from 2001 ! It’s indeed a pretty rare opportunity to taste a 15 years old wine, especially when it has kept so much strength while developing nice evolved aromas of leather and a flattering soft texture.

Les Racines 2014, Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

What a straight and gourmet wine ! If the wines from Blayais are well known for their abundant yet softened tannins, this Vieux Puit seduced us also by the complexity of its aromas. Fruity flavours of blackberry, spicy pepper and liquorice, and even chocolate, worn by fine and melted tannins. A great success.

Château Chapelle Labory 2015, Cuvée Parcellaire, Fronsac

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

At the nose, remarkable flavours of black and red berries. At the palate, you’ll be charmed by the wine’s density and its elegance. Tannins are silky, with a chocolate taste which is a signature taste of amazing warm vintages. Wines of the vintage 2015 have a very noticeable ageing potential in Bordeaux. This Fronsac can be appreciated right now or in the next two or three years.

    Les Saint-Jacques 2016, Domaine de l'Ecette, Rully

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

This cuvee from Domaine de l’Ecette shows how much Rully is a terroir that gives refined and elegant wines. Pinot noir, known to be among the most elegant varieties is here at its best. It displays its intense fruity flavours (mainly cherry) with mushrooms and spicy aromas that bring complexity. The main aftertaste is remarkably long and enjoyable.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Pinot Noir prefers to grow away from the sea as it does not like humidity. Indeed, it is very fragile and falls ill easily.
