  1. Château Lieujean 2012, Haut-Médoc Cru Bourgeois

Château Lieujean 2012, Haut-Médoc Cru Bourgeois

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

This month, we chose Chateau Lieujean, one of the best Cru Bourgeois in Médoc. It is deeply concentrated, with intense flavours of black berries, delicate woody aromas. Tannins are very present yet quite silky, and the length is long and juicy. A very complete and tasty Bordeaux.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

In Medoc, all wines are blends. And the two main varieties by far are Merlot and Cabernet-Sauvignon, the second one being almost all the time dominant. This blend gives intense wines with a good ageing potential, marked by aromas of black and red berries, and often completed by elegant flavours of leather or mushrooms if the wine already is a few years old.

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

Lieujean Family is acknowledged in Bordeaux as early as 1868. The Estate was already known back then to give wines with a strong personality. Since 2011, Chateau is ranked vintage after vintage in the Cru Bourgeois ranking that distinguished all the great wines in Bordeaux that were not ranked Grand Cru Classé in 1855. /p>

     Terroir

    Terroir

Located in Saint-Sauveur, next to Pauillac, Lieujean is close to the Garonne River, which plays the role of a temperature regulator. The soil is made of graves, medium round pebbles typical from Bordeaux that keep the warmth of the sun during the day to give it back to grapes at night. That’s why the wine is so concentrated.

  2. Domaine de Brunely 2018, Ventoux

    Domaine de Brunely 2018, Ventoux

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

It’s hard to imagine by seeing the high and windy Mont Ventoux (Windy Mountain in Provencal) that there are vineyards on its slopes. However, it is the case and the vines there give particularly interesting wines there. Brunely is typical of this appellation with deep peppery and cherry flavours that give an intense and complex wine.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

We find an equal proportion of Syrah and Grenache. The first one is the typical grape variety from Northern Rhone Valley and brings freshness and tastes of spices and flowers. The second one is the great variety of Southern Rhone valley and gives the creamy texture and the ripe fruits aromas. Carignan brings some structure and complexity to the whole with flavours of black berries.

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

From the 1990’s, Charles Carichon took after his father and never ceased modernising the Family vineyard. Moreover, he bought a lot of new vines in all the neighbouring appellations. Nowadays, he produces wines on almost ten appellations (Chateauneuf du Pape, Lirac, Gigondas…) and his wines benefit from a good reputation among wine connoisseurs./p>

     Terroir

    Terroir

Vines on Mont Ventoux benefit from an exceptional biodiversity. Soils are red thanks to a high concentration in iron which keep the warmth given by the Mediterranean climate. Therefore, grapes benefit from all the heat they need in order to perfectly ripen.

  3. La relève 2015, Jeanne Gaillard, Saint Joseph

La relève 2015, Jeanne Gaillard, Saint Joseph

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

Pierre Gaillard is one on the few Rhône Valley’s star winemakers. As Pierre ages, he is slowly putting his daughter Jeanne in charge of his best plots of vines. This is the meaning of this cuvee "La relève" (succession in French) which was designed and vinified by herself. This wine shows that Jeanne is more than a good choice to take over : this is the perfect mix between Gaillard’s amazing skills and a great vintage.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Syrah, nicknamed serine in the Rhône Valley, is known to give a good balance between power and subtility. Nowadays, syrah is also the most famous black variety in Australia where it’s known under the name of Shiraz. This grape variety has a spicy character and delicious violet aromas.

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

Daughter of the renowned Pierre Gaillard, owner of 4 estates in Rhône Valley and Languedoc-Roussillon, Jeanne Gaillard is now making wine on her own. Mainly located in Saint-Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage, she handles the local grape varieties with talent. She aims to highlight the pure expression of each grape variety and each parcel of her estate./p>

     Terroir

    Terroir

As in all the prestigious appellations of the northern Rhône Valley, the vines of Saint Joseph are located on the edge of a plateau along the Rhone River. These are swept by the winds that blow almost permanently in this rocky corridor : it is this characteristic that allows the Syrah, the black grape variety in the area, to express this remarkable freshness.

  4. Robert Pagès, Banyuls, Domaine Madeloc

    Robert Pagès, Banyuls, Domaine Madeloc

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

The cold winter made me feel like choosing a very warm wine. It is actually hard to find warmer wines than fortified wines from the Roussillon region in the Deep South of France. What is a fortified wine? It is a wine in which the winemakers add some distilled spirit. What for? The goal is to kill the yeasts that would otherwise turn the sugar into alcohol. This action has two consequences: the spirit increases the alcohol percentage per volume and there is a lot more sugar remaining in the wine.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Grenache is the most planted grape variety in the world. It is planted on more than 200.000 hectares all over the world. Grenache noir brings to the wine alcohol and a strong aromatic intensity with candied fruits aromas. Grenache gris brings mineral flavours that balance the wine.

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

Pierre Gaillard started ploughing the vineyards with a horse when he was 13 years old. He then founded the Madeloc estate and now manages several wine estates. Nowadays, his daughter Elise is in charge of Madeloc. Elise has been travelling all over the world, and combines family traditions with a great sense of innovation. At My VitiBox, we really enjoy Elise’s energy!

Madeloc estate is no ordinary estate. Indeed, it is the highest estate of Banyuls-sur-mer (with a magnificent view on the Mediterranean Sea), with vines up to 450 meters of altitude. 5. Mondeuse 2017, Adrien Vacher, Vin de savoie

Mondeuse 2017, Adrien Vacher, Vin de savoie

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

Mondeuse is one of my favourite grape varieties and it is from Savoie. It’s with Mondeuse that the greatest red wines of the region are elaborated. I like this juicy sensation that it creates, well balanced by firm tannins. Moreover, it has a lot of acidity, which underlines the crispy side of the red berries aromas. Eventually, good Mondeuses display some enjoyable peppery aromas as it is the case here.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Mondeuse is, as most grape variety grown in Savoie, relatively rare outside of the Alps. Its perfect balance between tannin and acidity make it quite easy to drink it relatively young but also allow to keep it up to 5 years in the cellar where ageing will give it more ripe flavours. Some expert say that Mondeuse is halfway between Burgundy’s Pinot Noir and Northern Rhône’s Syrah.

Mondeuse is known to pair well with charcurterie and cheeses, so it’s sold mainly in the Alps. Moreover, the fact that it can age is a good thing in areas where it’s hard to make the same amount of wine every year. However, it is also now grown in Australia and in the United-States on very different terroirs. Maybe those experiments are the beginning of the rise of Mondeuse! /p>

Trio Tempo, Malbec 2015, Osmin, Comté Tolosan

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

This artist wine is a unique blend of three different Malbec plots located on three distinct terroirs. This wine is an alternative version of this magnificent Southwestern grape variety that is Malbec, known for its marked tannic structure and intensity but here more fruity than elsewhere.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Malbec, or "cot" in the Loire Valley, is the pride of the area! It flourishes on clay and limestone or clay and gravel soils. Hautes-Côtes-de-Beaune 2015, Nicolas Potel

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

The appellation Hautes Côtes de Beaune is famous for its delicate red wines. This vintage is not an exception: a bright, shiny, cherry-red colour, and candied redcurrant and strawberry aromas, enhanced by spicy flavours ! On the palate, the wine is subtle, carried by a generous silky texture. The signature of a nice Burgundy wine, as I love them !

    Feuille

Equilibre Merlot Cabernet 2013, Domaine de l’Arjolle, Côte de Thongue

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

Equilibre means balance in French, a perfectly chosen name for this blend of merlot and cabernet sauvignon. This very elegant wine is perfectly balanced between the warmness and alcohol of the merlot and the tannic structure and acidity of the cabernet sauvignon. The whole is enhanced by nice aromas of red berries and vanilla. This wine will bring you a lot of pleasure !

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Merlot got famous in Bordeaux where it is the king variety of the right bank, notably in Pomerol where it is largely predominant. However, over the last 60 years, merlot has been more and more planted in Languedoc as the winemakers were shifting from producing a high quantity of bad wine to a small quantity of more qualitative wine. It gives warmth to the wine and soften the potentially harsh tannins of cabernet sauvignon.

Carpe Guilhem 2015, Domaine San de Guilhem, Côtes de Gascogne

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

Côtes de Gascogne is an amazing region mainly known for Armagnac. However, the area offers as well numerous great terroirs for white wines. The wine displays an intense and fresh bouquet, which is typical of Côtes de Gascogne, with aromas of citrus fruits and herbs. The mouthfeel is very fresh, long on the palate and has a nice salty touch. I suggest you serve it along with cod and melon.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

The large number of varieties used in the blend contributes to the wine’s complexity. Colombard, a typical variety of Gascogne, gives the fruity aromas. It is almost all the time blended with ugni blanc, which enriches the wine with floral flavours. Eventually, gros manseng, often used to elaborate sweet wines, gives the wine its light sweetness.

There are aromas of brioche and butter, and intermingled with notes of honey, I felt back in my lovely childhood days !

     Anecdote

Domain of Crampilh : a hymn to love. In the 1800s, Sabin Oulie, the mayor of a small village, chose to plant a vineyard and gave his estate the name of his beloved Melanie Crampilh. Since, time went by, and nowadays, the 4th generation is in charge. Bruno Oulié strives to perpetuate the tradition by producing wines with a lot of power and character but balanced by finesse and fruit./p>

    Terroir

The vineyard covers 30 hectares of vines, planted on the slopes of Aurions-Idernes on soils made of clay and silica. Te siliceous soils, made up of crystalline rocks, enable the finesse and give the wines subtle floral notes (here aromas of acacia). Clay soils offer harder, firmer and more alcoholic wines, giving the character of the fnish on this wine.

    The opinion of the sommelier

Light and subtle, this Touraine wine has an enchanting nose that reveals notes of red fruits and noble vegetal flavours. On the palate, the wine is fresh and displays nice crisp and juicy red berries aromas. There is just enough tannin to give to the wine structure and length.

    Dominique Morel 2016, Fleurie

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

Fleurie is one of the ten Beaujolais crus classés. I really love this kind of wines and they gain in fame by joining the style of Burgundy wines. I follow the work of the winemaker Dominique Morel for a long time and he shows us in this cuvee the whole know-how he has. Here we can feel splendid aromas of strawberries and blackberries with a lot of freshness. I am really proud to bring up to you this wine.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Gamay is the unique grape of this appellation and it expresses aromas of strawberries, blackberries and peppers on this granitic soil. Originally from Burgundy the Gamay was finally moved to Beaujolais because of the fear of making it more famous than the Pinot Noir. Gamay grapes produce rich wines with few tannins.

    The opinion of the sommelier

« I really liked the personality of the Château l’Escart’s wines, located on the way to Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle. You can notice it thanks to the numerous shells on the domain. The members of the Laurent’s family are biodynamic practitioners since 2005. The vintage 2010 of the cuvee Eden is one of the most “nature”. Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

« This month, I recommend you to taste the cuvee Bosstok pinotage 2012, a real crush with a good price/quality ratio. The winemaker decided to use a screw cap instead of a cork as it is often the case in South Africa: this avoids the wine to be corked.      Anecdote

    A wine, a family

This domain was created by three old friends that wanted to lead a vineyard at the tip of South Africa. Why M.A.N ? These letters correspond to the three initials of their wives: Marie, Anette and Nicky. Indeed, to convince their wives to let them start this adventure, they promised them to give their names to the vineyard.

Château Puynard 2011, Vignobles Grégoire, Blaye, Côtes de Bordeaux

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

I am quite happy I found this delicious Côtes de Blaye. The mouth is smooth and harmonious. It is like having a ballet dancer wearing a silk dress in your mouth. The finish, which is the taste that stays on the palate after the wine has been swallowed, is long and spicy.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

The blend merlot - cabernet sauvignon is emblematic of Bordeaux. Indeed, most of the wines from Bordeaux are made from these two varieties, sometimes adding a third one in very small quantity. Merlot develops fine red berries aromas and gives softness to the wine. Cabernet sauvignon brings acidity and strong tannins. It is also mostly thanks to cabernet sauvignon that this wonderful wine has some aging potential.

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

The Gregory family is well known around the vineyards of Bordeaux. Their ancestors started making money by selling harvesting machines. But working with so many winemakers made them feel like making their own wine and this is how they bought several estates in Bordeaux, including Chateau Puynard and the famous Château La Rivière.

     Terroir

    Terroir

The vineyard of Château Puynard covers 17 hectares. The vines are planted on hillsides along the Gironde river, in the Côtes de Blaye area. The close underground is a mix of clay and sand. When you go deeper, the underground has several limestone layers. This makes a really good terroir to grow highly concentrated grapes of merlot.

    Château d'Eck 2012, Pessac Léognan

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

It’s as if the beauty of Château d’Eck reflects on its wines like the sun in a mirror. This magnificent castle makes the pride of the Pessac-Léognan appellation. The wine displays aromas of cherry and wood, especially cedar. If you wish, you can keep it in your cellar so its aromas and texture evolve: it can ages up to seven years!

    Feuille

    Grape variety

The merlot is fruity and low in tannins. The cabernet sauvignon is strong in tannins and displays mainly vegetal aromas. The two were made to complete each other. And that is what Bordeaux is all about since the blend merlot and cabernet sauvignon is the most typical one there. But I would like to draw your attention to the petit verdot. It has always been present in Bordeaux, and since it is not sensitive to rot, it is more and more grown as the winemakers try to cut on pesticides.

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

Located in Cadaujac just outside of Bordeaux, the Château d’Eck is a real medieval castle where one of the best wines of Pessac-Léognan is made. The castle was the first property of the Duke of Aquitaine and then it belonged to the King of England when the region was under English domination. François Eck inherited the castle and the estate in 1824 and gave it his own name!

Domaine du Silène 2006, Domaine du Silène, Grès de Montpellier

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

This wine is already ten years old and starts offering nice aromas of evolution. However, it still has a lot of freshness and ripe blackberries aromas, great Languedoc’s wines hallmark. At the nose step, you can already smell the nice evolved aromas of leather. At the mouth step, we feel a nice balance between ripe fruits and spices, typical flavours of syrah.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Originally, syrah is Rhône Valley’s emblematic variety. But syrah is a strong variety that can thrive on a wide variety of terroirs on which it gives quite different wines. Syrah is especially adapted to Languedoc’s dry weather where it gets particularly ripe and gives more fruity aromas than elsewhere. The result is spicy and smooth wines like this amazing Grès de Montpellier.

    A winemaker, a family

The 57 hectares of Domaine de Silène used to belong to Jacques and Laurent Pourcel, two twin brothers, famous for their three stars restaurant “Le jardin des sens” in Montpellier. In 2000, the estate was bought by Robert Skalli, a major Languedoc wine producer famous for having built an empire thanks to his outstanding ability to detect the potential of wine estates. Domaine de Silène was one of his great successes: he turned a great estate into an amazing one./p>

     Terroir

    Terroir

Domaine de Silène’s vines develop on a poor limestone soil in the warm and dry mountains around Montpellier. The opinion of the sommelier

The white version of “ Vignes du Prieuré ” was one of the first one ever to be in a VitiBox a few years ago. That’s why I’m so happy to present you this month its red version in an amazing vintage ! The colour changes, but pleasure is still there. The first nose smells orignal : it’s not that common to find aromas of fresh herbs and strawberry together. However, it’s enchanting ! Silky, fruity and powerful, it feels like biting in a ripe fruit just picked up from the tree. It’s intense and refreshing !

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

Vines were planted in Château Gigognan when Gaule was a province of the Roman Empire. Later, the Archbishops of Avignon made this area their land along with neighbouring Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Then, various aristocratic families owned successively the vineyard, which is always good as they obviously wanted to have good wine at their table. Nowadays, Jacques and Sophie Callet perpetuate the grandeur of Château Gigognan by making wines worthy of being on the best tables./p>

     Terroir

    Terroir

Planted on a sunny terroir, Château Gigognan’s vines are also in a place where strong winds blow, notably the warm and powerful mistral. Thus, berries ripen but keep their freshness thanks to the wind. This kind of terroir gives amazing wines : the high level of sugar and alcohol given by the sun is balanced by wind’s freshness, and the result is a powerful wine with a great length.
