    The opinion of the sommelier

«This wine was produced with the three main grape varieties of the Bordeaux region: merlot, cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc. Enjoy the soft tannins of this cuvee coming from the cabernet franc; discover its woody aromas and its garnet robe with purple reflections. I advice you to pair this wine with a nice rare or medium rare rib steak. Enjoy!»

    Feuille

    Grape variety

The blend of these three grape varieties is common in the Bordeaux region. Merlot brings fruit hints and velvet feelings to the wine, while the cabernet sauvignon brings power and robustness. The cabernet franc, with fewer tannins, permits a faster aging and can be surprising with its vegetal aromas.

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

Château Bastian is a property of 7 hectares on the left bank of the Garonne. Brigitte and Stéphane Savigneux take care of this domain since 1988 and are often rewarded for their hard work. Indeed, they received an award from the Hachette Vin guide in 2014.

     Terroir

    Terroir

The soil of this terroir is composed of sand and clay, with pebbles, stones and gravels. As the soil is poor, the vineyards need to go deep in the soils to find nutriments. Thanks to the pebbles, stones and gravels, the sun is reflected on the wine grapes that enables a better maturation of the grapes.

  2. Légende d'Automne 2012, Château Haut-Meyreau,Bordeaux

    Légende d'Automne 2012, Château Haut-Meyreau,Bordeaux

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

For this Vitibox dedicated to the wines of Bordeaux, I really felt like making you discover Château Haut-Meyreau. It is not located in one of Bordeaux top appellations, but the winemaker’s skills seem to be enough to build a reputation since the Château is out of stock six months a year. This wine is very elegant, with subtle aromas of flowers.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Merlot and cabernet sauvignon work really well together! Merlot is the most common grape in the Bordeaux region, although this dominance is quite new. In the nineteenth century, it was the cabernet sauvignon that was the most cultivated variety. But after the second world war, the right bank of Bordeaux, where the merlot was dominant, got more and more successful, thanks to its prestigious appellations like Pomerol or Saint-Emilion. Merlot has less tannins than cabernet sauvignon, which makes it easier to enjoy young.

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

The wine estate is located in the “Entre-deux-Mers” area, in Dardenac, just outside of Saint-Emilion. Over the years, the estate grew by buying new parcels to its neighbours. From 5 hectares in 1802, it grew to 76 hectares today, which is quite impressive!

     Terroir

    Le terroir

The Château Haut-Meyreau is located in Dardenac, ten kilometres from Saint-Emilion. The vineyard covers 76 hectares. The subsoil is made of clay and limestone. It is an excellent terroir as the clay keeps a lot of rainwater to moisten the vines all year long. It strikes a balance with the strong sun of Bordeaux, ideal to grow great merlot and cabernet-sauvignon.

I felt in love at first sight with that white Côtes-du-Rhône, even before I smelt it! Look at this beautiful shiny green gold colour!      Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

François Dauvergne and Jean-François Ranvier are two old friends, passionate about oenology, who used to occupy important positions in the world of wine. That’s how their adventure began, and they now share all their knowledge about winemaking in order to elaborate a whole range of sophisticated wines.

    Origami 2012, Château l’Evêché, Bordeaux

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

In this month of April, I am proud to present you Origami by Chateau l’Evêché. This wine is a perfect example of the best you can find on the right bank of Bordeaux ! Its main characteristic is an amazing smoothness that will enchant your buds. Moreover, this wine is amazingly balanced and blackberries aromas pair perfectly with vanilla flavours brought by a delicate maturation in oak barrels.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

This wine is mainly elaborated with merlot as are most wines from Bordeaux’s right bank. Merlot gives flattering fruity wines but needs a lot of care and attention to gain complexity. Indeed, merlot is a fertile variety which gives high quantity of low quality wines when it’s let entirely free. Like other right bank good winemakers, Chateau l’Evêché masters the art of stressing merlot so it gives powerful and refined wines.

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

The history of Château l’Evêché starts several centuries ago when the bishop of the area asked peasants to plant vines around the chapel of Lescours. Château l’Evêché was born. It was then awaken in 2008 after a long hibernation when Jean Sébastien Capdevielle and Anthony Ginter got in charge of the 6 hectares located in Nerigean./p>

     Terroir

    Terroir

Château l’Evêché, a rising star of Saint-Emilion, also owns 6 hectares just on the other side of the Dordogne River. Merlot and cabernet franc, the only variety used in Château Cheval Blanc, are cultivated with as much care as for the Grand Cru. The only difference is that this side of the river is sunnier and wines are therefore a little sweeter. Yummy!

  5. Bonificat 2001, Vignobles Marie Maria, Madiran

Bonificat 2001, Vignobles Marie Maria, Madiran

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

People of Madiran have been growing vines since the 5th Century. Wines of Madiran are known to have a great ageing potential : that’s why we are proud to present this month a wine from 2001 ! It’s indeed a pretty rare opportunity to taste a 15 years old wine, especially when it has kept so much strength while developing nice evolved aromas of leather and a flattering soft texture.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Grown almost nowhere else outside of French South West, tannat is the emblematic variety of Madiran. Its name comes from the word tannin as this variety is known to be especially tannic. In the vines, you can spot it at first glance thanks to its unique deep purple colour given by this exceptionally high concentration in tannin.

Marie Maria vineyards belong to a group of winemakers from Madiran who have their own estates on the side and who gathered to buy the most uphill terroirs they could. Why did they do so ? The goal was to plant vines in windy areas to get the freshness the wines from this warm southern appellation sometimes lack./p>

  6. Les Racines 2014, Château du Vieux Puit, Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux

Les Racines 2014, Château du Vieux Puit, Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

What a straight and gourmet wine ! If the wines from Blayais are well known for their abundant yet softened tannins, this Vieux Puit seduced us also by the complexity of its aromas. Fruity flavours of blackberry, spicy pepper and liquorice, and even chocolate, worn by fine and melted tannins. A great success.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

4 grape varieties in this cuvée ‘’Les Racines’’, which is rather rare in Bordeaux! Moreover, the cuvée gives an important place to two "small" grape varieties, since petit verdot and malbec together account for 8% of the blend. 7. Château Chapelle Labory 2015, Cuvée Parcellaire, Fronsac

Château Chapelle Labory 2015, Cuvée Parcellaire, Fronsac

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

At the nose, remarkable flavours of black and red berries. At the palate, you’ll be charmed by the wine’s density and its elegance. Tannins are silky, with a chocolate taste which is a signature taste of amazing warm vintages. Wines of the vintage 2015 have a very noticeable ageing potential in Bordeaux. This Fronsac can be appreciated right now or in the next two or three years.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

The soil of Fronsac exalts Cabernet Franc, a grape variety that appreciates soils of clay and limestone! It is no coincidence if it is often grown in Libournais, the part of Bordeaux where Fronsac is. Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

I am in love with this Pessac-Léognan, typical of the appellation, and I think it will charm you. The aging in oak barrels gave the wine sophisticated smells of cocoa, coffee and vanilla. Château d’Eyran became the property of the de Seze family in 1796. And more than two centuries later, they still run the vineyard! The wines are aged in oak barrels, providing harmonious woody flavours and aromas.

     Terroir

    Terroir

Pessac-Léognan is known to be the best part of a bigger appellation in Bordeaux called “Graves”. It comes from ancient French and means pebbles. Indeed, for millenniums, the Garonne River has been bringing all those pebbles therefore creating one of the best terroir in the world. Indeed, the “graves” challenge the vine to find its nutrients, which makes it stronger, and reflects the heat from the sun to the grapes.

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

This month, I felt like presenting the Saint Joseph appellation to all whom do not know it yet. This wine is very typical of the appellation: it shows flavours of warm granite, a fat and silky texture with aromas of black berries, and a finish of black pepper typical of syrah. I tasted it on a delicious charcuterie board.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Even though syrah is a variety with low yields and is really sensitive to various diseases, it is one of the six most used varieties in the world. It is used worldwide, even in Australia where it is known under the name of shiraz. It gives elegant and harmonious wines with spicy aromas, mostly pepper. Will you find it in your glass?

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

The history of the vineyard began in 1920 when Henri Farge bought 12 hectares from a general from Normandy. Since 1980, it is Guy Farge who rules the vineyard. When Guy got in charge, the grapes were sold to wine merchants. But he decided to elaborate and bottle his own wines. Therefore, he made a few changes. The first one was to choose to work on the vines exclusively manually. And at My VitiBox, we appreciate when hard work is provided in order to make good wine!

     Terroir

    Terroir

Saint Joseph is one of the most beautiful appellations of the Rhône Valley. Indeed, the vines are planted on steep hillsides and circled by walls of ancient stones, next to the Rhône River. This way of planting the vines ensures a good exposure to the sun as well as a high level of water stress.

Marques Del Villar 2014, Les Passeurs de Vins, Rioja, Espagne

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

This Spanish wine was a real surprise. Rioja is indeed very well known for producing rich and flattering wines. However, it’s pretty rare to reach such a combination of power and complexity. I hope that you will appreciate as I did these intense aromas of cinnamon and red and black berries. A silky and elegant wine, with a great structure, perfect to experience the best Spain has to offer.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Tempranillo is by far the first variety in Rioja where it originally appeared. Thus, it represents 70% of the total production of the area. It is believed that its name comes from the word “temprano” which means early in Spanish, which would make sense as it reaches full ripeness several weeks before the other local grape varieties.

Les Passeurs de Vins is a typical bromance. Under the name “Lionel Osmin et Cie”, Lionel Osmin and 5 of his friends travel in northern Spain looking for the best vineyards in order to buy the best grapes and elaborate in their winery original wines according to their tastes. It allows elaborating warm and even opulent wines balanced by a nice liveliness.

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

It’s a very typical Cru Bourgeois that I chose this month. The robe is dark and deep. The nose is complex, with hints of spice, and is very promising. On the palate, I was impressed by its perfect balance and its amazing structure. The aromas of violet and red berries perfectly pair with the aromas of licorice, sign of delicate aging in oak barrels. A very refined Cru Bourgeois, quite classical in its structure but quite original in its aromas.

If cabernet-sauvignon and merlot are expected as there are some in almost all the wines in Bordeaux, the presence of malbec is a bit more surprising. The opinion of the sommelier

First noticed around 5 years ago, Modat is the rising wine estate in the Roussillon region ! The wines are splendid and I am very proud to make you discover "Sans plus attendre". A very gourmet wine, powerful and very fine at the same time. On the palate, the wine seems juicy, opulent, deep and of rare elegance. A wine of great balance and complexity found in many great restaurants.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

« Sans plus attendre » is composed of three grape varieties extremely widespread in the Languedoc Roussillon namely syrah, which brings its finesse and its spicy and violet aromas, grenache and its opulence and its aromas of red fruits and finally the carignan for its tannic structure and its generosity. Complementary, they make together the reputation of the great wines of the south.

     Terroir

    Terroir

The terroir of Saint-Chinian is divided in two parts. In one of them the soil is composed of schists which produce fruity wines with a low level of acidity. Domaine Haut-Loubier is located on the second kind of soil made of clay and limestone. This type of soil offers freshness to the wines and the limestone gives firm tannins that allows the wine to age longer.

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

This cuvee from Domaine de l’Ecette shows how much Rully is a terroir that gives refined and elegant wines. Pinot noir, known to be among the most elegant varieties is here at its best. It displays its intense fruity flavours (mainly cherry) with mushrooms and spicy aromas that bring complexity. The main aftertaste is remarkably long and enjoyable.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Pinot Noir prefers to grow away from the sea as it does not like humidity. Indeed, it is very fragile and falls ill easily. A terroir of limestone, and very filtering stone, are a great addition to protect vine stocks from too much water. It is this magic combination that allowed Burgundy to become and by far the best place in the world to grow Pinot Noir.
