  1. Domaine du Silène 2006, Domaine du Silène, Grès de Montpellier

Domaine du Silène 2006, Domaine du Silène, Grès de Montpellier

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

This wine is already ten years old and starts offering nice aromas of evolution. However, it still has a lot of freshness and ripe blackberries aromas, great Languedoc’s wines hallmark. At the nose step, you can already smell the nice evolved aromas of leather. At the mouth step, we feel a nice balance between ripe fruits and spices, typical flavours of syrah.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Originally, syrah is Rhône Valley’s emblematic variety. But syrah is a strong variety that can thrive on a wide variety of terroirs on which it gives quite different wines. Syrah is especially adapted to Languedoc’s dry weather where it gets particularly ripe and gives more fruity aromas than elsewhere. The result is spicy and smooth wines like this amazing Grès de Montpellier.

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

The 57 hectares of Domaine de Silène used to belong to Jacques and Laurent Pourcel, two twin brothers, famous for their three stars restaurant “Le jardin des sens” in Montpellier. In 2000, the estate was bought by Robert Skalli, a major Languedoc wine producer famous for having built an empire thanks to his outstanding ability to detect the potential of wine estates. Domaine de Silène was one of his great successes: he turned a great estate into an amazing one./p>

     Terroir

    Terroir

Domaine de Silène’s vines develop on a poor limestone soil in the warm and dry mountains around Montpellier. As a consequence, the vine stocks have to grow very deep roots in order to find what it needs to thrive. The relief comes from the fresh high winds coming from the sea that bring coolness and a little humidity.

  2. Vignes du Prieuré 2014, Château Gigognan, Côtes du Rhône

Vignes du Prieuré 2014, Château Gigognan, Côtes du Rhône

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

The white version of “ Vignes du Prieuré ” was one of the first one ever to be in a VitiBox a few years ago. That’s why I’m so happy to present you this month its red version in an amazing vintage ! The colour changes, but pleasure is still there. The first nose smells orignal : it’s not that common to find aromas of fresh herbs and strawberry together. However, it’s enchanting ! Silky, fruity and powerful, it feels like biting in a ripe fruit just picked up from the tree. It’s intense and refreshing !

    Feuille

    Grape variety

The blend of grenache, syrah and carignan is very typical from the southern Rhône Valley. Genache gives fruity aromas and sweetness, syrah brings some spicy flavours and carignan gives structure thanks to its high level in tannins.

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

Vines were planted in Château Gigognan when Gaule was a province of the Roman Empire. Later, the Archbishops of Avignon made this area their land along with neighbouring Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Then, various aristocratic families owned successively the vineyard, which is always good as they obviously wanted to have good wine at their table. Nowadays, Jacques and Sophie Callet perpetuate the grandeur of Château Gigognan by making wines worthy of being on the best tables./p>

     Terroir

    Terroir

Planted on a sunny terroir, Château Gigognan’s vines are also in a place where strong winds blow, notably the warm and powerful mistral. Thus, berries ripen but keep their freshness thanks to the wind. This kind of terroir gives amazing wines : the high level of sugar and alcohol given by the sun is balanced by wind’s freshness, and the result is a powerful wine with a great length.

Cuvée G 2011, Château Le Bouis, Corbières

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

I have already drunk nice Corbières but this one is quite exceptional ! Really full-bodied and creamy, it displays magnificent ripe blackberry jam aromas of and has a peppery finish that lingers on the palate. A powerful and complex wine, perfect for summer : garrigue and sweetness of the Mediterranean put in a bottle !

    Feuille

    Grape variety

With this blend, the winemaker put the South in a bottle. Indeed, we find in this wine all the qualities of the great southern wines. Grenache gives the wine its unctuous touch and its amplitude in the mouth and Syrah displays beautiful spicy flavours and carries all by its refined tannic structure. Caliente !

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

At the gateway to the Massif de la Clape, the Château le Bouïs welcomes you and has of course the best wines in the area but also and handful of beautiful surprises. The owners imagined an enchanting journey into the mysterious world of vineyards where, through an original staging, you will discover the Arts, Heritage and the 300 years of History of the Castle./p>

     Terroir

    Terroir

The appellation Corbières surprises by its hillsides where nights stay rather cool. This atypical freshness gives the wines a good ageing potential. Indeed, a fresh climate will allow the grapes to maintain a good acidity. And acidity is one of the key factors in the ability to keep a wine. Scientifically proven !

    Château Puy-Razac, 2015, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

Tasting this Saint-Émilion Grand Cru was a shot of pleasure! The deep ruby colour comes along thick and promising tears. The nose is complex, displaying at the same time fruity aromas and flavours of spices and roasting. On the palate, the wine is rich, the tannins are refined yet very present, and you will definitely appreciate its astonishing length.

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

By taking over in 1997 her grandfather’s personal vineyard (he used to also be the manager of Chateau Monbousquet) Catherine Thoilliez attempted to increase the wine’s quality by making research using different vine growing techniques to only keep the ones that were giving the best grapes. /p>

The cuvée de la Chevalière is my favourite rosé wine of the year ! I’m not surprised to discover that this wine comes from the renowned winery Mas la Chevalière with this gourmet aromas of currant and raspberry, enhanced by a subtle peppery touch.      Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

The story of Mas la Chevalière began in the 80s when Michel Laroche, winemaker in Chablis in Burgundy, discovered the great potential of the terroirs of Languedoc. The altitude, the diversity of the soil, the exhibition, everything was brought together to elaborate great wines ! Then, few years later, he decided to buy Mas la Chevalière, this beautiful property of character, and its 40 hectares of vines. Ever since, the winery has become known for the quality of its wines./p>

     Terroir

    Terroir

The clay-limestone and sometimes marl soils of Mas la Chevalière are very deep and thanks to this particularity, the roots of the vine can sink on several meters to reach a source of water that they do not find on the surface. This difficulty for the vine to go in deep soils, gives to the wines a lot of freshness !

Domaine de la Chastelle 2011, Côtes du Rhône villages

    Sommelier

The opinion of the wine taster

“A fine wine with an excellent price/quality ratio. Delicate aromas of strawberry and pepper come out from the blend of grenache and syrah. Wine is charming, fresh and fruity in the mouth. The aftertaste is sophisticated. The minimalist elegance will inebriate your senses. You can match this wine with the menu of Chef Michael Nizzero to spend good moments!

    Feuille

     Grape variety

This wine is a blend of grenache (60%) and syrah (40%). Grenache is easily recognisable due to his thick, hard and bluehis skin. Grapes are big and fruits are juicy. It’s what we call a “generous” varietal. It’s known for his aromas of cassis and spicy blackberry. Its tannins get rounded once wine gets older.

     Anecdote

     Winemaker

After having worked many years in winemaking cooperative, Julien Savanier and his wife bought the Chastelle winery in 2010. They wanted to “make the wine that we love”. Therefore, 2011 is their first harvest as owners of the vineyard. We have to say that for being their first, they have impressed us. This winery is a rising star!

     Terroir

    Terroir

The Chastelle winery is located on the left bound of the Rhone river. Vineyards are 50 to 80 years old. The age of vineyards is usually a sign of quality: old vines produce less grapes but they are better exposed to sunlight and fruits are more concentred. The terroir is made of a great variety of soils, sometimes sandy, clayed-limestone and pebbly.

    The opinion of the sommelier

« The cuvee L’Etoile de Bergey has as much potential as its big brother, the Château Haut-Bergey.      Anecdote

    Winemaker

Year after year, Sylviane Garcin Cathiard is building a small empire in the Bordeaux wines. She bought four different Châteaux in fifteen years : Château Branon, Clos l’Eglise Pomerol, Château Barde-Haut, and of course the Château Haut-Bergey.

     Terroir

    Terroir

The terroir of the Château Haut-Bergey is spread on 25 hectares of vineyards cultivated on an argilo-siliceous subsoil, mix of sand and clay. We often say that the clay soils produce wines that are solid, strong and alcoholic while the siliceous soils produce fine wines, with subtle aromatic hints. The union of the clay and the silica sand guarantees a terroir of high quality.

  8. Lirac, 2012, Domaine Coudoulis, Vallée du Rhône

Lirac, 2012, Domaine Coudoulis, Vallée du Rhône

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

Lirac is the appellation located just in front of Chateauneuf Du-Pape! In the Lirac vineyard, we can also find the famous rounded pebbles, so characteristic of Châteauneuf: those little stones were made famous thanks to their ability ofstoring heat during the day to return it to the vines at night. This wine is sophisticated, and I truly enjoyed the silky tannins, the spicy notes and the good balance of alcohols. Powerful, it goes perfectly with strong dishes, such as meat in sauce.

    Feuille

     Anecdote

     A winemaker, a family

The domaine Coudoulis managed to maintain a good reputation since its takeover by Bernard Callet in 1996. This winemaker’s choices have a lot to play in this reputation: indeed, the yield is limited to 42 hectoliters per hectare, harvest is done manually and the grappes destalking is made very carefully so that the tanks contain the least possible impurities.

     Terroir

    Terroir

The vines grow on a red calcareous-clay soil, full of pebbles accumulating heat during the day and returning it at night. The terraces above the village of Saint-Laurent-les-Arbres ensure a flow of rainwater, hence avoiding any stagnation that would damage the roots, while the Mistral wind regulates the humidity of the vineyard.

    Légende d'Automne 2012, Château Haut-Meyreau,Bordeaux

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

For this Vitibox dedicated to the wines of Bordeaux, I really felt like making you discover Château Haut-Meyreau. It is not located in one of Bordeaux top appellations, but the winemaker’s skills seem to be enough to build a reputation since the Château is out of stock six months a year. This wine is very elegant, with subtle aromas of flowers.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Merlot and cabernet sauvignon work really well together! Merlot is the most common grape in the Bordeaux region, although this dominance is quite new. In the nineteenth century, it was the cabernet sauvignon that was the most cultivated variety. But after the second world war, the right bank of Bordeaux, where the merlot was dominant, got more and more successful, thanks to its prestigious appellations like Pomerol or Saint-Emilion. Merlot has less tannins than cabernet sauvignon, which makes it easier to enjoy young.

The wine estate is located in the “Entre-deux-Mers” area, in Dardenac, just outside of Saint-Emilion. Over the years, the estate grew by buying new parcels to its neighbours. From 5 hectares in 1802, it grew to 76 hectares today, which is quite impressive!

     Terroir

    Le terroir

The Château Haut-Meyreau is located in Dardenac, ten kilometres from Saint-Emilion. The vineyard covers 76 hectares. The subsoil is made of clay and limestone. It is an excellent terroir as the clay keeps a lot of rainwater to moisten the vines all year long. It strikes a balance with the strong sun of Bordeaux, ideal to grow great merlot and cabernet-sauvignon.

    A winemaker, a family/p>

The Fezas family has been in charge of the estate for more than 150 years. Six generations succeeded one to another sharing the same goal of enhancing the wines from this marvellous terroir of Gascogne. The name of the vineyard, Chiroulet, comes from “chiroula”, a specific wind that blows in the area almost all the time. This wind is a really good thing as it keeps the grapes fresh and healthy!

     Terroir

    Terroir

The Domaine Chiroulet is located on the highest hills of Gascogne and therefore benefits from a southern exposure and strong winds that ensure grapes’ healthiness. The name “Les Terres Blanches” means “The White Soils” in French and refers to the limestone the vines are planted on.

Prestige 2012, Clos Moléon, Château de Teste Graves

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

This month, let’s go to Bordeaux to discover this magnificent batch by Château de Teste. This wine perfectly reveals the richness of its terroir during the tasting. The colour is purple with dark pink reflection. At the nose I smelled surprising aromas of cinnamon and hibiscus. The wine is also characterized by a good length and it ends on a nice touch of acidity.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Merlot is the most grown variety in Bordeaux. It is known for giving warm wines with sweet flavours, a silky texture and soft and discrete tannins. To give more structure to the wines, merlot is really often blended with cabernet-sauvignon, which used to be the main grape in the Bordeaux area until the 20th century and is known to have a stronger structure.

Located in the bank of the Gironde River, Château de Teste overlooks the vines of the small village of Montprimpblanc which was before named Monte Primulus which means in Latin the daisies’ mountain. The vines did not always reign on the hills of the region! Nowadays, the daisies are gone and the estate belongs to Laurent Réglat, passionate winemaker who produces wines in several appellations: Sainte-Croix-du-Mont and Cadillac.

     Terroir

    Terroir

The specificity of the Graves appellation is that it got its name from its soil. In French, “graves” are round hard pebbles that are really appreciated by winemakers. Indeed, those retain the warmth provided by the sun during the day and give it back to the grapes at night. Therefore, the berries never stop ripening.

«3» Côtes du Rhône 2015, Domaine des 3 Cellier, Côtes du Rhône

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

With its amazing flavours of thyme and cardamom, this wine reminds me a nice walk in the garrigue facing the sunset, when the mistral gets fresher and seems to be saying “time to go back home and to uncork a bottle”. I found that the aromas of this wine were remarkably refined and its texture was really smooth but without being fat, which is pretty rare and of course, nice on the palate !

    Grape variety

Along the Rhône River, there are countless vines. But have you noticed that the black grapes could look very different from one vine to another ? You might have noticed that some of them are especially dark with dark blue reflections. These vines are grenache, the prominent grape variety in Southern Rhône Valley. It’s a tasty variety, known for giving grapes a high level of sugar and fruity aromas.

     Anecdote

    A winemaker, a family

The Cellier Family has been cultivating their estate for eight generations. Its particularity ? Instead of producing a lot of Côtes du Rhône and a little Châteauneuf-du-Pape, they do the opposite with 13 hectares in Châteauneuf and only half an hectare in Côtes du Rhône. As you can guess, they take special care of this half hectares that they treat with as much as attention as their Chateauneuf ’s vines./p>

     Terroir

    Terroir

In the southern Rhône Valley, the sun heats hard. However, wines elaborated there are full of refinement and freshness. Why is it so ? Thanks to soils rich in clay ! Indeed, clay has a strong ability to store water. Therefore, the ground remains relatively cold and wet, which cools the vines when the heat gets too high and rehydrates the grapes when needed.

This new vintage of Marquès del Villar was love at first sip ! This rich wine is as original as it is warm and flattering on the palate. Cinnamon and forest fruits create a mesmerizing mix and the whole is carried by a remarkably soft texture. I advise you to taste this wine in your sofa under an air of Carmen to fly to Spain

Tradition 2012, Domaine Labranche Laffont, Madiran

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

This fabulous 2012’s vintage of Domaine Labranche Laffont shows that the reputation of rustic wines that once characterized Madiran is now far away. In the mouth, the wine is highly concentrated with well-marked tannins gentled during the four years since the bottling. Those carry a very subtle aroma of fig and smoked and peppered notes. I find its length on the palate remarkable.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Tannat is the king grape variety of Madiran ! Indeed, this grape particularly enjoys the gravelly and sandy soils of the south-west, and represents 40 to 60 % of the grape varieties of the appellation. Sometimes unknown to the public, it gives colourful, fruity and tannic wines. Small bonus ; its richness in tannins gives anti-oxidant properties !

    The opinion of the sommelier

Cahors is the birthplace of Malbec and still produces the purest wines from this now widely known grape variety. Malbec, the most famous grape variety of the region, blooms on the gravelly and sandy soils of the Southwest. It as well likes large temperature gaps between day and night, a phenomenon that it also found in the Andes in Argentina where it became the main black grape variety. 16. Edelzwicker, Cave de Hunawihr, Alsace

    Edelzwicker, Cave de Hunawihr, Alsace

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

Edelzwicker is a typical wine from Alsace in eastern France. This wine is unique as it is the only kind of wine from Alsace that blends several grape varieties. The grapes selected so as to elaborate those wines are not the richest ones, but the fact that several varieties are blended gives complexity often carried out by the freshness of young vines, which gives a particularly refreshing and balanced wine.

    Feuille

    Grape variety

Edelzwicker is a noble blend. Indeed, « wicker » means blend in old Alsace’s patois, and “edel” means noble. This particular batch is made of pinot blanc, sylvaner and chasselas. After World War II, wine merchants in Alsace (which was briefly part of Germany during the war) ware disorganised. Therefore, winemakers in Hunawhir were not able to sell their wine so they took action and created their own “coopérative” (an association of winemakers) to deal with this problem. Nowadays, Cave d’Hunawhir is ranked best “coopérative” in Alsace by Revue des Vins de France, the main wine magazine in France./p>

Vosges Mountains protect Alsace’s vineyards from strong winds as its continental climate (very cold during the winter, very hot during summer, but with cold nights) stimulates very efficiently vine stocks. That’s why 90% of the wine made in Alsace is white.

I met a few members of the Domaine de Vénus’ team at a wine fair, and I was immediately charmed by their wines. Pineau d’Aunis 2015, Vignoble Dinocheau, Touraine

    Sommelier

    The opinion of the sommelier

Two words to describe this “vin gris” rosé : astonishing and refreshing ! Astonishing first as it is quite uncommon to be able to taste rosé exclusively made from pineau d’Aunis. This historical variety of the Loire Valley gives light and fresh wines with a lot of character. It’s a true gastronomy rosé with surprising yet seducing peppery and flowery aromas, but it still keeps this refreshing side that we crave for in a rosé.
