The opinion of the sommelierDo you know Savennières? Well, I am pleased to introduce you to this appellation with one of its best ambassadors, Château La Franchaie. This very pleasant wine, with mineral and saltyflavours, also has very small oxidative aromasthat give a subtle taste of nuts and dried fruits. This wine is very well balanced between unctuosity and alcohol, and personally I love it !
TerroirSavennières is a small appellation that lies south of Angers on the right bank of the Loire. The Château itself is located near Possonnière in the hills of the appellation. The ground is made of schist. This laminated and fractured soil gives vine roots the opportunity to penetrate seven or eight feet deep, where rainwater naturally flows and where it can find the best nutriments. Moreover, this kind of soil keeps a lot of warmth from the sun, which protects the vines during winter.
Grape varietyIn Savennières, only one grape variety is allowed: the Chenin Blanc (also known as Pineau de la Loire). This kind of grape is mainly grown in the Loire Valley as it adapts little elsewhere in the world. White wines from Anjou (including Savennières) are mainly made from that variety. In Montlouis and Vouvray, winemakers make all kinds of white wines, from dry sparkling to sweet wines using.
Vintage2007 was a good year in Savennières. The weather was all year long well balanced, alternating sun and rain. The spring started with a lot of rain, which was quite rough on the winemakers but gave plenty of nutriments to the vine. Then the summer was very sunny, quickly bringing the grapes to maturity.
