The opinion of the sommelierThe cold winter made me feel like choosing a very warm wine. It is actually hard to find warmer wines than fortified wines from the Roussillon region in the Deep South of France. What is a fortified wine? It is a wine in which the winemakers add some distilled spirit. What for? The goal is to kill the yeasts that would otherwise turn the sugar into alcohol. This action has two consequences: the spirit increases the alcohol percentage per volume and there is a lot more sugar remaining in the wine.
TerroirMadeloc estate is no ordinary estate. Indeed, it is the highest estate of Banyuls-sur-mer (with a magnificent view on the Mediterranean Sea), with vines up to 450 meters of altitude. As a matter of fact, altitude preserves the vine from many diseases and it brings freshness to the wine. And freshness is more than welcome in this really warm and sunny area.
Grape varietyGrenache is the most planted grape variety in the world. It is planted on more than 200.000 hectares all over the world. Grenache noir brings to the wine alcohol and a strong aromatic intensity with candied fruits aromas. Grenache gris brings mineral flavours that balance the wine.
VintageThe Robert Pagès cuvée has no vintage. More precisely, it has several vintages. As for Champagne, fortified wines do not necessarily have a vintage. Winemakers can mix several vintages if they think that they will reach a better balance for their wines working that way. Moreover, this method allows winemakers to give more aromas to their wines and to have stable wines throughout the years.
