The opinion of the sommelierThis wine is an ode to what should be a northern Rhône Valley syrah. Indeed, Philippe and Vincent Jaboulet managed to express in their wine very distinct aromas of liquorice, red berries (raspberry mostly) and pepper. This nice Crozes-Hermitage, very typical from its renowned appellation, will pair perfectly with a delicate meat like veal or stronger flavours, like beef or matured cheeses.
TerroirThe estate is located in the southern part of the appellation which particularity is to have relatively flat vines. The consequence is that the ground is dryer as rainwater flows straight to the depth of the underground. Moreover, this plateau is quite high therefore pretty windy. It gives red wines incredibly dry with really expressive aromas.
Grape varietyEven if syrah is not from Syria or from Syracuse as it was long believed, it is still an international grape variety with 140 000 hectares planted all over the world. Argentina, South Africa, Australia, California, Chile, Mexico… But it’s nowhere as refined as in Rhône Valley where it historically is the only black grape variety.
VintageIn northern Rhône Valley, 2013 scared more than one winemaker. Winter was very cold and rainy, and spring looked more or less the same ! Therefore, in June, the rain damaged vines’ flowers hence decreasing the pollination rate and the number of grapes. Eventually, the summer was amazingly sunny, very warm, and the grapes harvested in September were fresh and ripe.
