The opinion of the sommelierPeople of Madiran have been growing vines since the 5th Century. Wines of Madiran are known to have a great ageing potential : that’s why we are proud to present this month a wine from 2001 ! It’s indeed a pretty rare opportunity to taste a 15 years old wine, especially when it has kept so much strength while developing nice evolved aromas of leather and a flattering soft texture.
TerroirThe grapes used to make Bonificat come from a dedicated small parcel with very old underground. This kind of soil is very rich in nutrients and gives grapes with a lot of various nutrients. This special configuration is known to favour wines’ ageing potential.
Grape varietyGrown almost nowhere else outside of French South West, tannat is the emblematic variety of Madiran. Its name comes from the word tannin as this variety is known to be especially tannic. In the vines, you can spot it at first glance thanks to its unique deep purple colour given by this exceptionally high concentration in tannin.
Vintage2001 was a great vintage for red wines from Madiran. However, the quality of the wines was a great surprise for winemakers who were scared by the rain that kept on falling during spring and summer. What they did not take into account was that even if it was raining, the temperatures were amazingly high and compensated the lack of sun. Therefore, the grapes harvested in September were perfect to make powerful, long-lasting wines.
