The opinion of the sommelierThis fabulous 2012’s vintage of Domaine Labranche Laffont shows that the reputation of rustic wines that once characterized Madiran is now far away. In the mouth, the wine is highly concentrated with well-marked tannins gentled during the four years since the bottling. Those carry a very subtle aroma of fig and smoked and peppered notes. I find its length on the palate remarkable.
TerroirLocated just next to the Pyrenees, the Labranche Laffont estate hides a rare gem! The estate managed to preserve tannat vines dating from the terrible invasion of the phylloxera, an insect which destroyed the major part of French vines at the end of the 19th century.
Grape varietyTannat is the king grape variety of Madiran ! Indeed, this grape particularly enjoys the gravelly and sandy soils of the south-west, and represents 40 to 60 % of the grape varieties of the appellation. Sometimes unknown to the public, it gives colourful, fruity and tannic wines. Small bonus ; its richness in tannins gives anti-oxidant properties !
VintageThe 2012’s vintage is a good vintage for the reds of Madiran although it has given lot of difficulties to winemakers ! As often there, winter was wet and cold, the spring was very rainy and got the winegrowers worried about the health of their grapes ... Fortunately, the sunny and warm summer allowed the grapes to catch up and reach a high level of the maturity.
