The opinion of the sommelierThe nose is remarkably delicate, with notes of candied fruits and black berries, and a hint of smoke. On the mouth, the tannins are soft. The wine gives off a remarkable balance between power and freshness. This vintage of Etre et Renaître shows the inestimable potential of Carignan, a variety that used to be despised, especially when it comes from old vines.
TerroirAs Languedoc’s reputation is growing, the winegrowers started a process of hierarchisation of the vineyards. That’s how the Corbières-Boutenac appe- llation was created : to distinguish one of the best terroirs of the larger Corbières appellation. Indeed, grapes harvested on this specific terroir of Boutenac give deeper and more complex wines than elsewhere in the area.
Grape varietyCarignan, which is the main variety in this blend, was long considered as a low-quality grape only used to make huge quantity of light wine. However, when the vines are in their fifties and later, yield decreases and the wines become a lot more intense and complex. Add the tannin and peppery aromas of Syrah and the softness of Grenache, and you get this great wine !
VintageThe 2014 vintage will remain etched in Languedoc winegrowers’memories. Summer was cold and rainy, causing severe flooding as autumn approached. Some of the vines were destroyed and a lot of winemakers were struggling at the same time to save their vines and their home ! Eventually, thanks to their passion, winegrowers managed to make great wines where water didn’t destroy the harvest.
